Nope. She better have the complexion of Dora the Explorer to be "latina enough".

Mentat: Because there are no fair-skinned latinas in the world, right?

There certainly are. They are signficantly already overrepresented in Latino/a media images. Its remarkable how many Telenovela characters look no different than the characters in Anglo soaps, although their target audiences look quite different. This is the way race and representation occurs in Latino/a media.

She ought to have a fair complexion.

Nah, not "genetically deformed due to rampant incest" enough to be Hapsburg.

Yup--its tied to class as well. Lighter-skinned = more desirable as a woman.

I do online surveys and over that last few years they have changed how they ask what your race is.

They will ask "Are you white, black, native or even islander?" and then on the next page ask "Do you consider yourself latino or hispanic?"

Since French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian are all derived from Latin, wouldn't much of Europe be "Latino/a" technically? ...basically you'd only exclude Scandinavia, Britain, and anything east of Germany.

4 out of 10 of the Disney Princesses are non-white.

I and many of my cousins can blend in with snow. All Puerto Rican.

It's weird getting guff from people who say, "Well, you aren't Latina. You are too white" and they think they are being open minded and not bigoted at all. Like you can only be one type of Hispanic; New World, indigenous mix. Because I've been to Spain. Go north and you can't throw a rock without hitting some light eyed and fair skin.

What a telenovela star (Sonya Smith) might look like. She's Venezualan, actually. Many of the lighter skinned actresses tend to be of South American descent, rather than Central American.

Tiana, from Princess and the Frog. Also Rapunzel, from Tangled. The "actually has parents" trend has been picking up speed for a while now.

As a fair-skinned Latino (Costa Rican) I get this all the time too. I teach and research African-American religious history and culture---the first day of class always ends with the jaws of the Black students dropping because they assumed I'm White when they walked in. When I start speaking Spanish with my CR accent it always throws them for a loop. Really breaks the ice though.

Yea, the world was a more dangerous place for royalty back in the day -- it was common for one or both parents to be killed before the children were born.

oldfarthenry: I know Walt was xenophobic but did he have an ug on for the Mexicans as well?

What? Walt lived in a time when at least 90% of Americans were white. Why is it the responsibility of white people to make cartoons for every other race? Why can't blacks and latinos make cartoons for their own people if it is so important?

Is there even such a thing as a Latin American princess? Aren't princesses almost exclusively European?
