I know an Icelandic guy who brags about all the cr*p they eat - worse than Scottish food (and my ancestors). I guess if you're on a rocky, cold island you'll eat just about anything after a while, especially when drunk.

I thought the food was amazing in Iceland (I lived there courtesy of the USN), with the exception of Harðfiskur... Best served with Brennivín, AKA "Black Death".

I started putting notes in one kid's lunch for the extra help in reading (usually jokes/riddles or a warning against bringing home any zombies with him after school) when he was in kindergarten. Now he's a teenager, but on the rare occasion that he decides he wants a "home lunch" (instead of a "school lunch"), he wants a note. Kept thinking he'd be bullied for it, but I guess either that's not happening or he's handling it (yes, I've asked).

/CS?

I have no idea what you're talking about. I went to Iceland and Scotland in August, had puffin, minke whale, haggis, and lots of yummy black pudding.

I was mainly referring to the fermented (or rotten) shark.

if he's asking for the notes (or anything), then he's not getting into trouble over it. either he deals with it, no one cares/knows about it, or, like me, his mom's notes entertained everybody.

my mom's swedish, so her notes were often strange swedish sayings that were strangely translated into english. everyone wanted to know what the notes were because that was the most entertaining part of the day.

they don't actually eat that stuff. they just tell people they do to see if they can get someone else to eat it. however, they're pretty stalwart when it comes to a joke, and will actually stomach the horror of eating that crap to further encourage you to try it.

/ although, pickled herring and gravlox are all great. sometimes old dead fish is delicious.

I have never had harðfiskur as I do not care much for jerky type foods, but I have had brennivín. To me, the brennivín was just the "I'm unconcerned with quality or taste" version of a crappy akvavit. I am very picky about my akvavit (Linie Akvavit, please!) so the brennivín was borderline nightmarish for me. On the plus side, a couple of snaps of that and you are no longer able to be completely disgusted by the taste or texture of lutefisk as your taste buds are in full revolt (if they've survived at all).

Truth be told, I think hákarl (fermented/rotted basking shark) is one of the most disgusting things to ever be invented. I wonder how many people died eating it before they figured out you had to ferment the shark first. I also wonder how many people died from the smell after they figured out you could eat it after it was fermented. I would gladly eat harðfiskur before I would eat hákarl.
