How do you look as these perennial stats and still say "abstinence-only" with a straight face? Doesn't it eventually suck, being wrong all the time?

No one who promoted these policies thinks they're wrong. If the teen pregnancy rate is up, it's because the libs interfered, and the solution is to get more Jesus-y.

The failure of their plans is, perversely, proof that they would work if they just tried harder.

No no no. The youth of today are a completely different breed of scum-suckers who have no respect for good conservative values that were championed by the previous generations. They feel entitled to whatever they want. The only solution is a hard tack back to good "conservative" (read here: "Christian Fundamentalist") values. Abstinence-only is the ONLY way forward. If only we would outlaw abortions and contraception, people would understand the grave reality of sex: that it's a terrible terrible sin*.

*Except when for procreation. That's OK, but you still shouldn't enjoy it! Enjoying sex is the milk of the devil!

We're not praying hard enough to keep these teens abstinent. When I pray, I do it so hard a little poop comes out of my butthole. Every time that happens it's Jesus letting me know that my prayer has prevented another teen couple from engaging in sinful congress.

Ya know, I have some pretty dumb friends. They INSIST that Utah has such low teen pregnancy numbers because the girls want to stay virgins for marriage because of the Mormon religion. They girls still have wild sex all the time, it's just wild butt sex, never vaginal, always anal. /facepalm

Why can't Texan sluts learn from imaginary Utahn sluts?

Bad parent that I am, I told my daughter that when she was ready, I'd get her on Birth Control and provide condoms. Which I did when she told me she was ready. I was a teenage once, eons ago, so I knew this abstinence only crap was unrealistic.

Hispanic birthrates in Texas (according to the 2010 census) were 49% of all births. Non-Hispanic whites was 35%. That is the latest reliable data set.

Yes, in traditional Mexican societies, girls would get married at 16 or 17. (This actually isn't any different from traditional American societies in the West and Southwest.

When I lived in Los Angeles in the 1980s, our neighbor had her quinceanos and was married the next year, so she was 16 or 17 when she was married, that wasn't out of the ordinary.

Of course, when Mexicans practice "traditional family values", it drives conservatives nuts.

You're doing it wrong then. Granted this is data from 2008 but it's pretty consistent nationwide. That being said, it doesn't matter what race, creed or color the 'parents' are. This is a serious problem that needs to be addressed.

I live in the middle of Jesus land in Texas. Our schools have taught abstinence for years with little to no success. I spoke with the superintendent a few years back when my Boys were still in school. At the time we had, if memory serves, somewhere between 5 and 7 pregnant girls enrolled in the district. Mind you, each grade level averages 40 students. We're not a big district. These girls were not just high schoolers. At least one was in middle school. The conversation went something like this:

Me: Say, Mr. B, I don't think this whole abstinence thing is working out too well. How much are we spending to have it taught.

Mr. B.: About (I can't remember the figure but it was over $10K/year).

Me: Hmmmm. Say, I have an idea that might work for about 1% of that cost.

Mr. B.: Oh?

Me: Yeah, we could buy a case of condoms, and put them in candy jars in the bathrooms of both campuses. Once the novelty wears off, I bet they will be put to good use. Hell, I'll buy the first $100 worth.

Mr. B.: Now how well do you think that would go over in this town?

Me: Worse than the fact that we have 7 pregnant teens in town and I don't know about you but to me that's all ass backwards.

I got no real reply from him, but I think he and I were on the same wavelength.

That's always my problem with using "birth" rates as an argument against abstinence-only sex ed. If amount of sex stays the same, but abortions decrease, you're going to see a raise in the birth rate that had nothing to do with abstinence only sex ed.

By putting in context with the headline...

"Texas leads the developed world in teen pregnancies ~"

Hispanics making up the majority of teen pregnancies in Texas (as well as most other States), I posted that I wasn't surprised by it.

And once you resort to calling us "farking idiots" you forfeit any argument you might've been trying to make, whatever that was. Good day, sir.

The only state that has a higher white teen birth rate is New Mexico. 26 states have a higher Hispanic teen birth rate. It really doesn't have anything to do with the Hispanic or Black population in Texas; in fact, the Hispanics are helping to lower it.

Proportions, how do they work?

I think the problem is that that they classify these third world states as part of the developed world just because they are in the US. Even within those states the more developed parts tend to be less conservative.

If Texas were an independent country it would be as poor or poorer than Mexico. The only reason it isn't now is that businesses can offshore jobs there without actually going offshore. If you eliminated the parts of the State that went for Obama it would be that poor now.
