...and yet, Wal-Mart can charge those prices because they know somewhere, one of their customers is idiotic to pay it. After all, they go to Wal-Mart in the first place.

Just because they put those price labels on things doesn't make people that stupid. Although I did sell a farking book about an extinct bird for $400 the other day.

I don't know what is so idiotic about shopping at wal-mart. Their stores attract a lot of..ineteresting people, but you can find many of the same items there for much cheaper. If you have moral hangups about shopping there then don't go, but shopping there doesn't make you a bad person or an idiot.

A price tag is not an offer in the contractual sense. It is an invitation to make an offer. Go offer $5 for the NBA Live 2002 and see what they say.

Walmarts pricing system is centrally located. The corporate office controls 90% of the markdowns on discounted merchandise. The other 10% is the stupid shiat you are seeing right now. The store manager has to decide what needs marked down and how much. He has a budget to work with. Surprise, surprise, the budget is nowhere near large enough to actually mark down discontinued merchandise necessarily. And if they go over their budget, it comes out of their bonus. So, we're seeing relics laying around in stores because the geezer store managers have no concept of outdated technology and refuse to mark this stuff down to it's current market value.

The Wally World closest to me has 2 freakin aisles of broken and useless clearance crap that is mostly worthless. And everything is just tossed into bins or just thrown onto shelves without a price tag or a shelf tag.

This store opened November 2011. Its already a sorry stinking mess.

Walmart sucks for discount bins. I have never seen a worthwhile markdown there. Sears used to be great but I haven't been there in a while. I bought bandsaw marked down 80% once.

Home Depot used to be great too, but not anymore

Childless, slender, pocket money to play with.

Yep, Grab my socks, and get out.
Except last week, I go past a rack of Hawiian Punch. It's ane end cap display. A pallet of the stuff.
$1/ soda, but I grab two cause I forgot to pack lunch and tatke them to work.
Round 10 I grab one and take a swig.

I found a Tie Fighter Collectors edition CD ROM for $0.50
Baldur's Gate 2 Collection (with everything, even xpac, in the original Box) for $2.00
Total Annihilation, Ceaser 2, Jedi Knight Jedi Academy all for $0.50 each

At a normal store, this might work.

I don't think the guy clocking $7.50/hour working the register at Walmart is likely to have either the reasoning skills nor the authority to negotiate pricing.

Walmart sucks for clearance. I saw a Hyperscan at one a few months ago for only about 20% off the original price. Now Target, however... I bought a 6 ft Monster-branded HDMI cable for $7.50. I still can't figure out how I got a Monster product for under $100.

/sadly Target is now pretty bad for PC game clearance

Oh, it does! It is just the disk and the jewel case (no box) but it has very little scratches on it (I burned an image off of it and use that to play with, and I just keep the disk in my fireproof safe)

My original got destroyed (my dad got angry at me one day, rightfully so, and crushed the disk in front of me). I was so happy that I found this one, I just need to buy a joystick.

That depends on how you define 'idiot'.

Do you like higher quality goods, regardless of where you buy them? Then you're an idiot if you shop at Wal-Mart.

Do you think that companies who exploit their workers both domestically and abroad are bad? Do you think sweatshops are bad? Then you're hypocritical and an idiot if you shop at Wal-Mart.

Do you think unemployment is a bad thing, and that America needs all the jobs it can get? Then you're an anti-American idiot when you shop at Wal-Mart.

Do you not care about any of that, because dammit, you want the lowest prices and Wal-Mart has them? Then you're really an idiot for shopping at Wal-Mart (and they're laughing all the way to the bank).

Wal-Mart is nothing more than a national clearing house for cheap Chinese crap, some of which happens to have the labels of once-quality American products on it. Just because they wave American flags at you doesn't mean they love America, and just because they tell you their prices are lower doesn't mean that they are.

In 1992, Wal-Mart had lower prices on good items because they had a vastly more efficient logistical chain. In 2002, they had lower prices on mediocre items because they had the market cloud to bully suppliers into lowering prices. Now the other guys have logistics that are just as good, and the suppliers have cut out the price losses Wal-Mart imposed on them by cutting back on quality, so Wal-Mart's stuff is still inexpensive, but is also very low in quality.

You're not just amoral for shopping at Wal-Mart. You're also being fleeced, and you're contributing to the prolongation of the problem.

Yep. Brands at Wal-Mart are different then the exact same brand someplace else. They might have cheaper materials or maybe skip some steps in the QC process. Especially with electronics and appliances. I would rather buy something for a couple of bucks more and have it last twice as long.

Yeah, I bought some Levi's from Wal-Mart once in an emergency situation. They were the cheapest pieces of shiat I've ever put on. Levi's should be ashamed to let their label be put on that crap, because normally they make very good jeans.

I don't even buy candy from Wal-Mart. Until we all back away and make their ego deflate a bit, they'll never correct their abuses.

whistleridge: Do you like higher quality goods, regardless of where you buy them? Then you're an idiot if you shop at Wal-Mart.

I don't do my shopping exclusively at wal mart. Video games, garden equipment, garbage bags, sure. I'm pretty sure it's the same goddamn nintendo game that sells for $10 more at gamestop. Clothes? Very rarely if ever. Maybe undershirts or something.

Do you think that companies who exploit their workers both domestically and abroad are bad? Do you think sweatshops are bad? Then you're hypocritical and an idiot if you shop at Wal-Mart.

No I don't think they are "bad". In America, people have a choice. They can quit any time they like. No one at wal-mart is forcing them to work there. If I offer you a dollar to mow my lawn, then someone accepts, are you going to chastise me or the person who agreed to mow my lawn? There are plenty of other options for unskilled jobs. There are metric assloads of option in America for low-skill/min. wage options.
As for "do you think sweatshops are bad mmmkay?" If you are going to take the moral high ground on this then I challenge you to look around your house and throw away everything made overseas in a "sweatshop". Then make sure you look at the label on every product you purchase before you do so.
In addition, wal-mart supports a huge number of other jobs in the economy. The logistics alone must be hundreds of thousands of domestic jobs. Like Apple, even if it's not manufactured here it doesn't mean it's not helping our economy. We need people to move the product, sell the product, take inventory of the product - the list of people that are responsible between an iPad leaving the factory and getting to your door would probably astound all of us.

Do you think unemployment is a bad thing, and that America needs all the jobs it can get? Then you're an anti-American idiot when you shop at Wal-Mart.

(see previous)

Do you not care about any of that, because dammit, you want the lowest prices and Wal-Mart has them? Then you're really an idiot for shopping at Wal-Mart (and they're laughing all the way to the bank).

Great, so am I because I just saved a lot of money on my shopping list by going there as opposed to other stores.

No. The prices really are lower.

You're not just amoral for shopping at Wal-Mart. You're also being fleeced, and you're contributing to the prolongation of the problem.

I think it's amoral to judge people based on where they shop. I also think it's amoral to assume that you are so much smarter than everyone else that you always know what's best for them.

I own rental property and most are on Disability or Social Security, I can vouch VHS tapes are alive and well. When you only get $750 a month, you pretty much live on what everyone else throws away. For example I bought one of my tenants and entire box of 50 VHS tapes for her birthday, total price? $10.

Oh, i didn't realize there were qualifiers to your statement...of course most people who buy games ASAP are buying the latest titles.

Here are some older ones...

Mass Effect 3:

Gamestop: $29.99
Wal-Mart: $29.96

4 cents...woo getting better!

Ahh, here is one that is a major difference...

Sims 3:

Gamestop: $29.99
Wal-Mart: $25.52

Of course, that came out in 2009.....

I'm not saying they don't have lower prices, but in my mind, I could probably find 4 cents in the Gamestop parking lot to make up for the difference.

Game prices don't vary much between stores, especially new releases.

Libertrollian: but you can find many of the same items there for much cheaper

Your name gives you away, but I can't resist... Most stores nowadays will either sell things cheaper or match the price of any competitor, including Walmart. AND they'll typically offer a more pleasant shopping experience to boot.

/Has fallen in love with getting my groceries at Publix and my prescriptions at CVS.
//Had almost forgotten that there are stores where they'll help you out to your car.

2012-10-19 07:54:47 PM
I'm just going to casually drop this in here:

http://www.southernsavers.com/2012/10/target-new-holiday-price-matchi n g-policy/

Target's new price matching policy in a nutshell. Not only are they matching other stores (including Walmart and even Amazon.com) now, but they're also providing free Wi-Fi in store so that their customers can look up the pricing for themselves.

Now, I realize that some of you might hate Target just as much, but keep in mind that they're not the only store that will match Walmart's prices (if the other store isn't already cheaper to begin with). Most couponers (and no, not the crazy ladies with the three carts full of toothbrushes) will tell you that Walmart is crap for deals in the end. Other stores take more coupons and even double them and will have a better selection and better service. Some stores will even take Walmart store coupons. Even the base price (price without a coupon) is cheaper in some stores.

Prime example from my grocery shopping experiences:

Simply Orange Juice at Walmart: $3.99
Simply Orange Juice at Publix: 2/$6.00 ($3.00/each)

Just one of the many things I'll find cheaper when shopping elsewhere. And at Publix, the person bagging my groceries will help me to my car.

I had to walk into a Walmart a few weeks ago because I needed a particular item quickly and didn't have time to order it online. Unfortunately, they were the only store to carry the item. I figured while I was there I'd pick up a few other things. I quickly passed on the other things when I noted the pricing. It was SIGNIFICANTLY higher than I typically would see in other stores. I grabbed my one item, waited in a line for 20 minutes behind people with full carts in the "20 items or less" lane, and got the you-know-what out of there while vowing never to go back.
