All this reminds me that I would love an updated version of Star Control 2.

Put it on iOS and Android, please.

colonel0sanders: More on topic - looking at this game lets me know it's finally time to start looking in to a new desktop. Somethin tells me my old Core2Duo with a 9800GT just isn't going to cut it. I've always wanted to build my own, and this might just give me the chance.

I'll be honest: Because of the consoles and their gigantic pull on developer's target market you actually aren't that far behind on the curve. You still outspec them both by a long shot.

My GPU I am fairly happy with, I put that in only 2-3 years ago - the rest though really could use an upgrade. The Core2Duo in there is one of the earlier models, I *think* its the 2.13GHz E6400, and my OS is only 32-bit, so I only get 3GB of usable ram.

Oof, aight well if I can recommend from experience, the 2400/2500/2600K series CPUs are *redonculous* for performance vs price vs overclockability. You set yourself up with one of those (remember the K is important if you intend to overclock(which is the whole point of the things)) and then throw in some motherboard that allows the multiplier plus some ram (4gb of 1600mhz ddr3 is like 20$) you can put the rest of your existing parts into that. The video card can come later, video cards are always a moving target but the sandybridge processors are one of those pure awesome things that for me at least were very worthy of upgrading from a heavily overclocked 2 core system for.

FYI this game is more than likely to require higher end hardware that's available in 2013. Playing this on your P4 laptop isn't going to cut it. This genre needs to come back noawh.

Scrotastic Method: So this is telling me that DOSBox will let me run my official legit copy of the game?

...and what if my copy of that game is still in my desk, in my old room, 3000 miles away? What if I needed a, um, digital backup of my licensed copy?

See, I own at least 2 copies of X-Com: UFO Defense, TFTD, a copy of Wing Commander & all the mission packs, WC2, WC3, The Bard's Tale: Tales of the Unknown (for Apple II)... I know it's evilwrongbad to download copies of those that will work with DOSBox on my phone (or cAndy Apple for Apple II stuff), but since I actually have physical copies in my house, I don't really care.

/abandonware is the devil, n' stuff like that, so don't steal or something

colonel0sanders: Recently, my dad gave me a box of old CD cases, and I was amazed to find my old copy of the TIE Fighter CD. I fired up DosBox, and sure enough the thing still works.

Poke around the internet, there is a way to mate the improved graphics of one version of TIE Fighter with the improved music of another... and keep the two expansions... and make it run on Windows 7.

For a while I had it going thanks to some Farkers, although I reinstalled and haven't dug the post and files I snagged out of my backups yet.

Roof Pig: DarthBart: ShadowLAnCeR: While I never played Wing Commander specifically I do remember all the great flight space sims from that age, I would love to see another with modern technology.

/is SO in

I'd love a remake of the Microprose stealth fighter series. There's a lot to be said about being a sneaky bastard rather that just going in guns blazing and seeing who dies first.

Ohhell yes. I still have the midi theme song burned into my memory. Loved this game.

Fighter or Trader? I put mine down for the trader. Also, to whoever posted the Trade Wars pic, you can telnet to bbses that offer that now.

Freelancer here. I don't know if it'll be possible, but my plan is to "Millenium Falcon" the hell out of my ship. Upgrade the engines, weaponry, shields and then use it as an explorer that can get me out of the shiat when necessary.

/or get me into it when I'm in that kind of mood

ZeroCorpse: Give me an updated Privateer with a totally open, sandbox galaxy to play in. Let me customize my character and ship to my liking. Do not put me on rails, nor force me on a quest filled with cinematic scenes. Just give me the world to play in, and let me make my own goals.

Here you go.

It sounds very ambitious, but good games often start that way. I like his take on immersion and it could well set the bar for future PC games if its successful.
While I do love fighters, I hope he makes some capital ships playable too.

I played the everloving snot out of Privateer.... more than a decade ago.

I actually picked up Evochron Mercenary on Steam sale, on a recommendation that it was reasonably close to that same experience.

So far, not so much. The learning curve is a touch steep, and I haven't had several consecutive hours to sit down with it and master out my use of the controls.

Still, reading that headline gave me chills, the good kind. I've still got WC3(2 copies!) and WC5 kicking around, and I'm sure my Privateer CD is still here somewhere... where did I last see that?

Excuse me. I need to rummage through my things now.

PanicMan: I've been looking for an excuse to buy a no-shiat flight stick. Done.

X-Wing vs TIE Fighter was the only reason I ever bought mine. Way back when DA-15's were still commonplace on mobo's. I'd buy another if, perhaps, someone did a Kickstarter for a new XWvTF...

/it's gonna suuuuuck!

This is from a guy who isn't old enough to have played any of Chris Roberts games.

Its a shame really. The children can't remember when games weren't just hard, they were unforgiving defeat factories.

You know, it's actually pretty easy to get X3: Terran Conflict (or X3: Reunion) using the Privateer ships. Most of them have been mod-ported in. (As have most of the more popular sci-fi franchise ships.)
