The PC brigade of re-imagining butthurt took down Chief Illiniwek and 80 years of tradition at one school.

I don't see any reason why DC or the NFL would be any different.

I think DC can live without its feathers and its war bonnets.

MLB and Atlanta and Cleveland too.

If this sh*t matters, and our tiny little army of PC warriors, sorry, of lawyers and concerned descendants says it definitely does, than what the University of Illinois went through should be completed everywhere there's still a mascot that offends a group of people, using the same logic.

Otherwise its just selective enforcement, and pretty much proves the whole thing was a comical political farce.

The only answer is to decide on a name that offends no one. Then give that name to all sports teams.

The Fuzzy Puppies defeated the Fuzzy Puppies 24 - 22.

/On second thought, that name might offend women with chest hair. But you get the idea

The people attacking it probably shouldn't be making a big deal out of it. There are worse injustices in the world. The people defending it place WAY too much importance on sports and sports mascots/team names.

In short, you are all coonts.

That was not their original name, their original name was the Four Skins, but for some reasons religious folk objected.

Might have a point for teams like the Indians. For the Redskins, wake me when Notre Dame changes to the "Fighting Micks". I'm sure the Irish would be just fine with that. In fact, it's honoring them.

Redskins is a little more offensive than Illini. So even though the whole Illini thing was PC nonsense, the Redskins really need to change their name. Look up the story of the Illini, awesome badasses who deserve to be mascots.

the Redskins are under NCAA jurisdiction now? I mean I know they've sucked recently bust busting them back to Div 1A is a little harsh, no?

That said, simple fact is the Redskins have thier name because it was the nickname of thier head Coach way back when they were a Boston team. A head Coach who just happened to be the ONLY native American head coach in pro football, until...Washington Redskins Head Coach Jim Zorn

ya
not really

'warriors' - 'braves' or even 'chiefs' or the name of a tribe are not negative remarks or titles

"indians" while not in and of itself a negative connotation (think Vikings i suppose), the smiling chief may be a bit over the top

redskins - how this is considered anything other than a racial slur is beyond me - while it may not be up there with something like 'new york N bombs' it's pretty close & is pathetic that it's still around - and of all places, our nations capital. freaking classless

This reminds me of the whole "Squaw" thing from a couple weeks back...

No one knows the offensive definition of the word, so by highlighting it, these people are doing more harm than good.

Although, it would be funny to see these people be successful, and have all depictions of Native Americans whitewashed out of popular culture so that they have no representation at all. And oh, the biatching you would hear then.

PC! PC! PC! Waaahhhh! You PC meanies are taking away our God-given right to use racial groups as mascots! Some members of said racial groups aren't offended, either! I have Native American friends who aren't as PC as all you meanies, they think it's hilarious! Waahhh!!! Wahhh!!! If we can't have racial groups as mascots then the next thing that will happen is no animal teams (because vegetarians will be offended, or something), and then no Devils, because religion, and waahhhhh! You people are too thin-skinned! Wahhh!! These people are too PC to understand that we're HONORING their racial groups, because they're such fierce fighters that our forefathers tried to genocide and didn't even succeed 100% at that task! Wahhh! Why just look at the Cleveland Indians mascot, it's a cartoon! Everyone loves cartoons! Plus that means it's not serious, it's just a joke! Why are you all so butt hurt? Wahhhh! I like sports! Don't change my team's name!!

/Take a step back from sports, and look at what you're defending.

There was a story on NPR a few years back about a former Redskins player whose wife wanted to get to get him a vanity license plate reading "1REDSKIN"; the state wouldn't allow it, and IIRC the guy took them to court. The NPR interviewer asked the guy "Well, you're a Notre Dame grad; what if they changed their team name to 'The Fighting Tightwads'? Wouldn't that be insulting?" They guy just busted out laughing and said "Hell no, that's hilarious!"

My first reaction: newspapers...yes, I remember those.

My second reaction upon reading the names of the newspapers: I'm sure all 30 readers, which include the editors and their families, will be amused.

Now...

The "Redskins" nickname was given to the team in 1933 by then-owner George Preston Marshall, supposedly in recognition of head coach Lone Star Dietz, who may have been part Sioux. That Marshall was a known and avowed racist who greatly opposed the integration of the NFL doesn't do a lot for the argument that the team's nickname is an innocent conceit.

The integration of the NFL in 1933 meant specifically the inclusion of African-Americans into the league. Native-Americans, most notably Jim Thorpe, had been playing in the NFL from its beginning. Marshall may well have been a racist, but that racism did not extend to Native-Americans. The author of the article was apparently too busy being snarky to fact check.

In before the claims of white victimhood because we're not being allowed to use cultural caricatures of people against whom we committed genocide for our sports teams. Or not.
