Sylvia_Bandersnatch: I thougtht I might bring some of my college and community radio experience in. College radio broadcasters and listeners are very receptive to memes, and likely to respond favourably. Community radio broadcasters and listeners tend to lean progressive, and most also have a good sense of humour, and a soft spot for worthy charities.

With that in mind, I've compiled the below list. These are college stations that have won mention on various lists of the last couple years. Those with more than one mention get a number of stars indicating how many mentions they've had; this might suggest how relatively popular they are. But all the ones listed have been mentioned at least once. I have listed them alphabetically, for easier cross-referencing. Note that K-stations are first, then 'Radio' (Web-only), then W-stations.

POPULAR COLLEGE RADIO STATIONS: (I have tested and verified all links.)

KALX Berkeley
KANM (College Station, Tex.)
KAOS Evergreen St. Coll. (Olympia)
KCPR Cal. Polytechnic St. U. (San Luis Obispo)
KCRW Santa Monica Coll.
*KEXP U-Wash. (Seattle)
*KJHK U-Kan.
KPSU Portland State U. (Ore.)
KVRX (Austin, Tex.)
*KUPS U-Puget Sound
**KZSC UC Santa Cruz
Radio Chapman U. (Orange, Calif.)
*Radio DePaul U. (Chicago)
Radio K U-Minn.
*WASU Appalachian State U. (Boone, N.C.) [Note: Site may be infected.]
WBRU Brown U. (Providence)
**WCRX Columbia Coll. (Chicago)
WCWS Coll. of Wooster (Ohio)
***WERS Emerson Coll. (Boston)
WFUV Fordham U. (Bronx)
***WGRE DePauw U. (Greencastle)
WHRT Sacred Heart U. (Fairfield, Conn.)
WHUR/WHBC Howard U. (D.C.)
***WICB Ithaca Coll.
WJCU John Carroll U. (Cleveland)
**WKDU Drexel U. (Philly)
WKNC NSCU (Raleigh)
WPRK Rollins Coll. (Winter Park, Fla.)
WQFS Guilford Coll. (Greensboro, N.C.)
WRBC Bates Coll. (Lewiston, Maine)
WRHU Hofstra (Hempstead, N.Y.)
*WSBU St. Bonaventure U. (N.Y.)
*WSOU Seton Hall (So. Orange, N.J.)
WSPN Skidmore Coll. (Saratoga Springs)
WUTK U-Tenn. (Knoxville)
WVKC Knox Coll. (Galesburg, Ill.)
WVUM U-Miami
WWNW Westminster Coll. (New Wilmington. Penn.)

(A very valuable list would be CMJ's 'College Core 100' list, but I don't know how to get that. These are the 100 or so college stations that CMJ feels are the most influential.)

Next are a very few community (not college) radio stations that are worth mention. There are well more than these, but these are the ones I'm most personally familiar with and recommend on that basis:

***WFMU East Orange, N.J.
**WPKN Bridgeport, Conn.
*WWUH W. Hartford, Conn.

I would call 'FMU the 'brass ring' here, if you can get it. It's arguably the most celebrated and influential independent free-format radio station in the U.S. They are legendary, and broadcast to New York City. WPKN is an independent station (though physically located at UB) that also broadcasts into New York, and across the southwestern quarter of Connecticut. (They also have a large repeater at Montauk, so they get the whole shore, lower Rhode Island, and eastern Long Island.) WWUH is much less influential, but is very well respected in the Hartford area.

Tips:
- Spend a few minutes looking at the station's site, to get a sense of what they're like. Each station has its own culture.
- Many stations now have ways to contact whoever's on the air other than by phone. Check for that.

Another good college station:

KSPC - Pomona College (Claremont, CA).

Very liberal, lots of great indie music.

They even have a Video Game Music show...

I had no idea how truly clueless people could be until I looked at 170 TV station websites.

Bad design doesn't even begin to describe it... The Charlotte stations, IIRC, look like they were all designed by the same guy, regardless of network affiliation. And it's a lousy design - Cluttered, too busy, mouse-over lists that are too small to click, etc.

It's as if, at TV management school, they offer a course in Online Presence, then show the students an old Geocities page and a MySpace page and say, "Do this."

There's another station whose site is about 95% Flash elements, and they must be have a host that is served from somebody's spare bedroom on an ISDN line. Took over five minutes for the page to fully load. Would have closed the browser tab, but (at first) I wanted their contact info. Then it became a matter of morbid curiosity and I just had to know how long it would take...

The suits at the station, probably don't know either. Their "tech" guy probably showed them the page after they received complaints, and said, "See, it loads plenty fast". (Never mind that the files were on the local machine...)

A very special note from Unfreakable:

I don't really look at this as a Democrat thing or a Republican thing or a political thing, I consider this an Internet thing. The same as when Fark helped send a crowbar and a Half-Life strategy manual to the scientist at the LHC that looked like Gordon Freeman in one of the publicity photos.

A lot of people are saying, "Hey, he can afford to buy his own car!" Of course he can. This isn't about helping Joe because he can't afford a car, it's about making a silly Internet meme become reality, and also to help some charities. If you really want to discuss politics, I'd ask that you go over to the politics tab; there are a lot of current stories there that you can discuss. This one is about having fun and doing something neat. If you don't want to join in, you don't have to--that's your choice. I'd just ask that you find a different thread that's more to your liking.

To all of you Farkers that have helped in any way, whether it was contributing with money, or time, or organizing any of this, or helping share the word on your Facebook wall or tweeting it--YOU FREAKING ROCK. Thank you for what you've done, and hopefully what you'll continue to do. This is awesome and everybody who has had a hand in helping to set this up or keep the momentum going is fantastic. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Kumana Wanalaia, I believe, made a post yesterday that I'm quoting here, along with my responses to it.

"RichieLaw was pondering whether it would be worthwhile to start an entity for one-off charity type situations. "

I believe it would. There are lots of situations where people could benefit from receiving help from an organization that specializes in what we're doing now: Crowd-sourced & crowd-funded charitable work that is done in a humorous, light-hearted way.

"It takes time and energy and devotion to do this. "

Yes, it does, but it's worth it.

"The fact is that there are thousands if not more small scale but worthwhile nonprofits out there who could use help."

Undoubtedly, there are, like the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen.

"The current item on the agenda started off as an inside joke. A meme made real, with a positive social impact and the potential for a lot of good press for Fark.

That mission must be completed for anything else we do to have credibility."

Agreed. No one will take seriously a bunch of "people from the Internet" if we can't get this done.

"I wouldn't be against participating in something more permanent."

Nor would I. I LIKE helping people.

"Perhaps (with Drew's permission on the TM) Fark Charities, which helps run campaigns for the lulz (once a year, perhaps) but with focus on a fixed number of other events through the rest of the year. Set a limit on the number of concurrent causes (maybe just one) and have Farkers nominate causes to publicize for 45 days (or however long)."

Initially, I can see the need to limit things to one cause at a time. That is only because we're literally making this up as we go & "inventing the wheel", so to speak. Once we've got things completed with GJTB, we'll have a set of tools, like procedures, roles, contacts, etc., that we can rely on moving forward.

I also see the need to initially limit the nomination of causes to Farkers. Down the road, if things work out well enough, that could be expanded to the 'Net/general population at-large.

"Even if people who are key in the current campaign burn out or decline to help in the future, we have a fairly strong step-by-step process that has been shown able to net $10,000 in a week. We lowball it and say $10,000 in two weeks, since it doesn't have the relatively high visibility as the Onion article and the Vice President, but we would have a track record (successful partnering with Doctors Without Borders, blowing through our stated goal) for credibility.

For a lot of causes that is a BFD."

We've raised $14K in under a week...

ONCE.

Maybe we're actually really bad at this and could have raised ten times that amount if we were really good. Or it could be that we have a really good cause, mixed with humor, that is enabling our success to this point and we're doing as well as anyone could expect. Or maybe we are really good at this and we are excelling. We won't really know until we've done two or three of these.

Not playing Debbie Downer, here; just trying to be realistic and play the role of Devil's Advocate.

(Now factor in Cyclometh raising another $8000 in a day. Maybe this is a good model...)

"Just thought I'd mention that this is possible.

Incorporating is trivially easy. I dunno about Illinois where RichieLaw is from, but in Indiana it's about $75 to file online if one is incorporating as a non-profit. Last year when I checked, it was several hundred more to file with the IRS to apply for non-profit status. Successful completion of a campaign (meaning money raised and sent to the designated beneficiaries without problems) gives us numbers to extrapolate from for the necessary 2 year budget thing that they require."

Budget-wise, there'd be no need for any kind of fixed base of operations; we already have an on-the-go setup that works - the 'Net.

"Tax deductibility of contributions is retroactive if non-profit status is granted. All the paperwork looks somewhat daunting but working through it isn't actually that hard if you have some initial results to work through."

Paperwork is paperwork. Yes, it can be mind-numbingly tedious, but we've all done it. Plus, I think it's worth it if that is the price to pay in order to do some good in this world.

"Their primary interest is in how the money flows in, your structure and controls, and how the money flows out. There's a list of things that public charities are prohibited from doing, and a list of things that public charities must do. They don't play a game of gotcha, everything you need is right on the IRS website and kept up-to-date."

That makes things easier. The big keys are to follow the rules, stay 100% accountable, both monetarily and in actions, and to create, grow and maintain a positive working relationship with those in the seats of power.

"Anyway, this is something to think about."

Indeed, it is. I can see that I'm not the only one who read RichieLaw's statement I maybe doing something like this and thought, "Hmm, that could be doable."

Anyone else interested in seeing if this could become "a thing"?

2012-10-19 08:05:18 PM
I think it's worth exploring and I'd help out however I could, MustangFive. But I think we have to be realistic about how much you can squeeze out of Fark as a general source- first, there's donor fatigue, and second we're not bottomless wells of funds. The real power of Fark is in spreading the word; the reason we've gotten 8K today for the soup kitchen is because it's burning up Facebook.

But yes- I'd be happy to support a transparent charitable organization that comes from Fark. I love the idea.

I agree that this is likely to cause donor fatigue on Fark. And I'm not exactly wealthy myself. I'm thinking beyond Fark, though.

Fark is a conduit for the message, as is Facebook, Twitter, reddit, email, and every other 'Net-based entity you can name. We've shown, so far, that we have some good, decent, hard-working, SMART folks here, ones who have figured out a way to do good by leveraging the new realities created by this series of tubes. Think about my post from the other day about how people don't understand the Internet: This IS the new world. Let's put it and our collective talents to work to try and make a better world.

David Ragan,Greg Biffle and Brad Keselowski all do work with The Wounded Warriors Project. NASCAR is a big supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project and helping military families.

Keep up the good work everyone!! I think this is amazing!! For six years I've been reading FARK headlines and finally got an account today.

On a side note: I sent an email to my local TV station about this. They always have a segment about popular things on the internet. Don't know if they will do anything but one can only hope

Greg Biffle? For whatever reason, I really really really don't like him. He's just one of the drivers I absolutely detest for some unknown reason. I'll add him to the list but I'll feel wrong twitterbombing him

/Jimmie Johnson on the other hand...mmmhmmm
//boogity boogity boogity let's go bombing!
///Oh god, I know about NASCAR things

Cyclometh: I think it's worth exploring and I'd help out however I could, MustangFive.

I'm in, for whatever I can bring. Enthusiasm and bad ideas, I guess...
