(Some Farker)   I make shirts for some of history's greatest scientists and philosophers, but in the style of rock bands. Check 'em out at Monsters of Grok   (monstersofgrok.com) divider line 28

dstanley: I want the Van Allen one.

And also the Niels Bohr one. It's subtle--I like that

Van Allen, Bohr, and the Tesla/Edison one were my favorites. Especially the last one, that's a really great joke I'm surprised I've never seen before.

Might have to pick one of these up soon.

Subby here, I actually started my shirt empire (...ahem...) about like 8 years ago with a shirt inspired by a Fark thread (the infamous lipstick kitty thread).

If you have any requests for thinker / band combos post 'em here in thread or use my request-o-tron and I'll add them to my list.

This may be covered on your webpage, but how do you come up with the right band to pair with the person?

Well rarely is there any conceptual connection (with a few exceptions). Basically I just started by collecting a big list of iconic band logos, and a giant list I made of thinkers I wanted to use. After that it was just a matter of matching them to names that have the right essence to hopefully work well. Like some band logos really reply on having a specific letter in it, or the appropriate ascenders or descenders in the letters to match some flourish in the design.

For example with the Doors I needed a name between 4-5 letters with at least of the iconic hollow slashed "O"s in it, so I just looked at what would fit the bill from my list of thinkers and, voila, new design.

What I'm trying to say is if you don't make a Van Allen belt-buckle you've totally lost your focus.

I see Kepler, but no Copernicus or Galileo.

Kinda surprised that probably the least well known of the three got one, but oh well.

That's a really neat idea! They look good!

Sometimes it's just a matter of not being able to get a name to work well with a logo, sometimes I just like to root for the underdog. In this case I think a Galileo / Chicago shirt will arrive sooner or later.

An Archimedes one would be cool. Maybe something with a screw in it.

I also second Galileo and Copernicus.

I wasn't ragging on you for it, I thought the shirts were pretty cool. Just something I noticed.

/I prefer Kepler anyway because he was the maths guy

Leonhard Euler / Lynyrd Skynyrd? Not sure it'd work visually.

IFC had a similar idea. Movie directors as rock bands:

You lost with Sagan and DeGrasse cuz I find those two intolerable but...

you won me back with Van Allen, Watt, Tycho, duChamp and Salk.

Excellent stuff, subby!

Pretty cool, though I'd like it if you had an album name to go with it, perhap some pun on an album by the band font inspired the philosopher's font. In some cases you won't even need to change the name (Master of Puppets works fine for Machiavelli, for instance).

I see from your political shirts that you're a liberal...

Thus, you making t-shirts for a living...obviously.

Ok.
