CSB:

While I was waiting for Comcast to set me up, I was leeching off of the neighbor. During this time, I discovered that his entire hard drive was shared out over the network. So yeah, I looked, and found what I call a "Craigslist picture" of him. I changed his SSID to "hot midget porn" after Comcast connected me.

He later changed it back and applied the security settings. Thinking back, I should changed it to, "my hard drive is shared out" or something to that effect.

Mine is Happy Funtime Wifi. I live in a crowded subdivision, I'm surrounded by a multitude of boring wifi names including the ever popular totally unprotected "linksys" coming from someone's house.

I get it if you want to piss of your neighbor, but if the reason for the silly names is that you just don't want people getting into your network you don't need to broadcast its name, in case you didn't know.

Guilty, but mine's not so much passive-aggressive than it's just silly. There's a "FancyPenguin" somewhere close, so I named mine "OrdinaryBoringPenguin".

I know, I'm no Henny Youngman, but my 12 year old thinks it's funny.

I just don't broadcast the signal publically, but then I'm not a moron and I'm quasi techie, so I realize that's a bit confusing for people not smart enough to even change the default name.

Also I call it "Network Error."

Ya I'm good.

Find out his favourite hockey team, then slag them.

Be the easiest if he's a Leafs' fan. I'd suggest "Toronto:losing since 1967" or some more humourous variation

While reading this I saw a linked article about someone having a racist router name. A lady wanted someone to serve time for it and the police were looking into it as a "bias crime." There really is no hope for this country.

I set up most of the routers in my neighborhood so they don't have funny names, but I know all the passwords.

Hiding your SSID doesn't do anything against real crackers.

I don't hide my SSID anymore ... because now I have an important piece of wifi hardware that's able to connect to WPA just fine and dandy, but it can't figure out how to connect to a hidden SSID, WTF?

If you were even quasi-techie, you would know that hiding your SSID is pointless. It doesn't help. Basic security settings and a decent passphrase will keep your neighbors out. After that, any hacker worth his or her salt will have a scanner that shows them your network and all its secrets. They probably will view that amateurish move as a good reason to hack that fark out of your network just because you thought you were good.

City people's problem.

/I get one really weak signal from one neighbor who is about 1/3 of a mile away.

Nuclear Monk : I just wish I could get better coverage in my house. Eight wifi signals...none of them mine at times :(

YMMV, but I have a pair of linksys WRT54GL routers all running DD-WRT and over the years as the old people moved out of the complex and younger folks moved in, more and more brought wifi with them.

So, I bumped my transmission power up and moved my wireless channel well away from theirs.

But the thing that made the biggest difference in my signal quality was replacing the stock omni antennas with directional antennas.

The main router is in the very back room of my condo, which means that a decent chunk of the signal broadcast by the omni is going across a room that has no wireless devices (it's the room my workstation is in ... it's hardwired) and out the back wall/window of the condo. With the directional antennas, I wrangled more of that wasted signal and sent it toward the router that's at the front of the condo (that one is configured as a bridge & repeater).
