Oaklanders are fond of their crime.

Do not attempt to deprive them.

His comment of "We have to do a better job of getting guns off the street" makes me think not.

SFGate's commenters are some of the stupidest on the internet -- and that's saying something. They profiled one of their top commenters, who turned out to be some dumbass in Texas with nothing better to do.

In Oakland? Surprising.

If you want to read about crime in Oakland look no further than the SFGATE. If you want to find out about crime in San Francisco forget about it, it goes largely unreported.

A man pointed a gun at him, demanded his iPhone and wallet and fled in a car, said Kalb, who was not hurt. The robbery happened after Kalb had attended part of a neighborhood crime prevention council meeting.

"Kind of ironic, isn't it?" said Kalb, whose platform includes a call to hire more police officers and invest in programs that reduce recidivism rates for convicts.

That's not ironic.

I went to Oakland for a three day training once. I was told leaving the hotel alone was not a very good idea. The whole place had a weird vibe and I couldn't wait to leave. I will never go back, either.

Ships during WW2. The blacks moved to Richmond, Oakland, Marin City to work in shipyards during the war. It was part of what is called the "Second Migration"

Actually, FTA, he resumed his "get guns off the street" derp.

/The man with the gun just got your wallet and phone.
/I don't think you'll get his gun, and the cops couldn't care less.

In 1950-1952, while all the wartime production was closing down in Richmond and Oakland and the new industries were appearing in the suburban parts of the Bay Area (for example, defense industries down in Santa Clara county), all but 500 of 50,000 residential development permits were "whites only". And this was before the freeways - just try commuting to Sunnyvale from Oakland where you used to work at the Chevrolet plant or from the Richmond shipyards where you used to work at Kaiser. Near-total unemployment among blacks. Can't live where the jobs are. Can't work in the places you're allowed to live.

Racism -- not just a southern thing.

(I live in one of those homes, that racial covenant is still on the deed. Unenforceable, but still...)

As someone that was born and raised in Oakland, I'm not really getting a kick out of these replies.

Is there crime in Oakland? Sure, in some parts. In others, you'll find some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the country - where houses sell for $5 - $10 million.

Like any other city, you just need to know where to hang out and where to avoid.

/Yes, I'm a Raiders' fan, and yes I have all of my teeth.

We're not on the same "getting a kick" page apparently, but I was robbed in the Rockridge district. Wannabe gangstas know no boundaries
