fta: CNN says: "Romney supporters are going after her on two points, no doubt because their man did not have as good a night as he had in Denver."

That is pathetic.
Romney did as well as he did in Denver. It was a consistent performance.
0bama did a heck of a lot better than he did in Denver.

Based on the debates, voters have seen two different versions of 0bama and one consistent Romney.

No one is criticizing Candy because it was a much closer debate, they criticized her because of her actions.

Turns out, antagonizing the moderator isn't a great way to win a debate. Who knew?

This is ridiculous. Romney didn't repeat the success of his first debate. I don't think there's any dispute of that. Why not simply accept it? There's a singular gripe I can see regarding the moderator and that was her "fact check" that needed its' own fact check.

Yes, because those extra 3 minutes made such a huge difference.

Obama called it an act of terror. Romney said he did not call it an act of terror. Both events were recorded on video. You can watch them. If you can't watch them because you're at work or something, the transcripts are available all over the web. What further fact checking do you need?

According to CNN's timekeeping, Obama got 44:04 minutes of speaking time, while Romney got 40:50.

Let's focus a little more on how they used their time than how much time they got.

Come on, now, that's probably the least stupid thing I've ever heard him say. Obama stepped his performance in a big way. Romney did the same blustering cram-as-many-lies-as-possible-in-each-breath tactic that he used successfully in the first debate.

In the scheme of a saving face, I don't think this type of "correction" weights as heavily as the blank-stare-inducing smack down delivered during the course of the debate. Aside that though, who is really trying to pass this debate off as anything but a better performance for Obama and less so for Romney?

Considering two or three times Romney wanted to give up his time to ask Obama to answer questions Romney had of him ("Are you saying you it an act of terror in the Rose Garden?", "Can we talk about what's in your pension?"), I am surprised they're still trying to do rule-lawyering on this.

tenpoundsofcheese: Romney did as well as he did in Denver.

I've agreed consistently, Romney was an embarrassment in Denver too. That was the most damaging aspect for Obama, he appeared passive before such a poor debater who browbeat the debate protocol.
It's also why the second debate was so damaging to Romney. He demonstrated exactly how flummoxed, petulant, and entitled he becomes when forced onto an even field, a raw new experience for the clan. By demonstrating an ability to manage Romney's poor behavior with humor, wit and greater (if not exactly great) respect for the moderator, Obama demonstrated clearly his first debate performance wasn't a failure of character. It greatly diminished its importance.
If this perspective is close, the third is going to be fireworks. Romney's best tactic is to abide by and support the debate protocol, but it's more probable his character won't permit it and he doubles-down on the alpha CEO clown suit. If he does goes Full Romney a third time the rats will stamped the exit ramps and you and your peers will go completely bugfark on the loss.
Time to stock up on popcorn.

I guess you were away the week after the first debate when every third word out of an Obama supporter's mouth was "Jim Lehrer"

The 2nd debate was pretty much a wash, maybe a slight edge to Obama, but of course if you're an Obama supporter, you're going to think Obama killed him and Romney lied instead of realizing they both dance around the truth.

The moderator was out of line jumping on Romney. While Obama said "acts of terror" in his speech, he was miles from stating the attack was an organized operation, and the administration's public stance for the first week after the attack mirrored this.

And we want to send a message all around the world -- anybody who would do us harm: No act of terror will dim the light of the values that we proudly shine on the rest of the world, and no act of violence will shake the resolve of the United States of America."

Let's focus a little more on how they used their time than how much time they got.

I agree with you, but I just have to say that I don't trust CNN's ability to accurately work a stopwatch.

They consulted Twitter for updates on when the time changed.

How'd the count crosstalk? As a side-note.

Still don't care about the amount of time spent talking so much as what was said... welcome to the club. We are apparently Bad Americans (tm) because we don't navel-gaze about the debates and instead prefer to focus on the messages and ideas presented by the candidates in that or any other format.

MugzyBrown: While Obama said "acts of terror" in his speech, he was miles from stating the attack was an organized operation, and the administration's public stance for the first week after the attack mirrored this.

Then that's what Romney should have said. He had a clear opening here and he chose to lie and be made to look foolish.

If he had said that Obama "was miles from stating the attack was an organized operation, and the administration's public stance for the first week after the attack mirrored this", the moderator would have said nothing. Instead, he said that Obama never called it an act of terror when everyone with an internet connection can readily pull up a video of Obama saying that it was act of terror.

He could answered well, or he could have lied. He chose to lie. He just couldn't help himself.

Before we get all conspiracy-minded, could it perhaps be because there were occasions where a candidate did not use his full allotment of 2-minutes?

The rules dictate both candidates speak for a maximum of 2 minutes for each question. So in the end, they should have the same number of talking opportunities, but not necessarily the same amount of time

Yea, but for the most part they just started to set up their comments so they could end them when the moderator finally broke in. I think if the moderator never broken in neither one of them would ever stop talking.

Not that I blame them. These bogus, staged debates are mostly just campaign stops anyway where they can spew the standard talking points (although this one was a bit more interesting than normal), so they might as well take advantage all they can and force the moderator to be the one to enforce timing.

I think that was Lehrer's biggest mistake. He assumed politicians would just play by the rules when he should have known they were just going to talk and talk and talk until he told them to shut up.

Actually, I thought this was an example of Mitt lying by using weasel words. He wants the public to think that Obama is lying when he says Mitt and the GOP want to limit access to contraceptives. So he says -specifically- that he thinks all women should have access to contraceptives. But he very specifically doesn NOT say that insurance should cover it. So, sure, you can have contraceptives... IF YOU PAY FOR THEM OUT OF YOUR OWN POCKET. Otherwise, he DOES believe that employers should be allowed to prevent their insurance companies from covering contraceptives.

He's still a liar.

She said he was wrong on his point. She said that his broader point was true, but in drilling down and focusing on the Rose Garden comments Romney put himself in the wrong.

MyRandomName: Mercutio74: To be fair, Obama also had content, Mitt had platitudes.

I would love to see Obama plan on raising 1 million manufacturing jobs. Obama spends more time talking about Romney's plans than he does his own. In fact Obama has laid out no plan of what he will do the 2nd term.

How the hell is Mitt going to create 12 million jobs? He might as well announce that he's going to cure cancer. Talk is cheap, and most non-partisan economists think his economic plan is ridiculous.

One thing I noticed is that he continually got the unemployment numbers wrong by about 12 million. Maybe that's his plan. He'll start using the BLS numbers after getting into office and claim credit for getting jobs for the 12 million phantom jobless.

Danger Mouse: MugzyBrown: redmond24: Democrats all agreed Obama sucked the first debate. Even Obama admitted as much.

Romney loses and its the moderator's fault. Vast liberal conspiracy.

Their act is so old.

If you're intellectually honest you would admit this.

THIS [uparrow thingy]

How much organization does it take to send a bunch of emails to clerics that will get pissed off by that crappy video and sneak a couple of rpg's next to a embassy in the middle east? My question is where did the idiot get the money for the trailer?

davideggy: Obama talked more because Romney was too stupid to learn about the debate format and kept whining that he wasn't allowed to have the last word a "fair" amount of the time while the moderator told him multiple time that that is not how this format works.

HA. He was very upset that he was not allotted the last word every time.
BTW - we cannot afford anymore silver-spooned presidents who throw a tantrum and invade a country every time they don't get their way.

Actually, a bunch of economists agree that there would be a growth of 12 million jobs over the next four years regardless of who's elected.

Well, there you go. He'll take credit for the sun shining too.

Everyone knows Obama could have dropped trou, spread his cheeks and beefed a premie on stage and Candy and the rest of his followers at CNN would have applauded and called him the greatest debater since Plato. I don't expect objectivity from CNN or Fox News, that's why I rely on magic beans and the ramblings of decrepit women.

That's why CNN called it a tie?

Danger Mouse: RyogaM: Check the transcript

MR. ROMNEY: Yeah, I - I certainly do. I certainly do. I - I think it's interesting the president just said something which is that on the day after the attack, he went in the Rose Garden and said that this was an act of terror. You said in the Rose Garden the day after the attack it was an act of terror. It was not a spontaneous demonstration.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Please proceed.

MR. ROMNEY: Is that what you're saying?

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Please proceed, Governor.

MR. ROMNEY: I - I - I want to make sure we get that for the record, because it took the president 14 days before he called the attack in Benghazi an act of terror.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Get the transcript.

MS. CROWLEY: It - he did in fact, sir.

(crosstalk)

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Can you say that a little louder, Candy? (Laughter, applause.)

MS. CROWLEY: He did call it an act of terror.

Even MS Crowely admited she shouldn't have said anything as Romeny was correct on his point. The actual trasncript says the US doesn't stand for acts of terror (in a broad sense). But Obama and his adminstration for weeks decarled this specific act to be a spontainous anti video demonstration.

Hillary and Obama even cut a info commercial for Pakistan blaming the video. Maybe Romney could roll a clip on Monday.
