I thought it was because Romney kept using his time to ask Obama open ended questions (which was both a stupid ploy and against the secret agreement they made) and Obama took advantage of it.

2012-10-18 01:25:07 PM

Dr.Mxyzptlk.: Obama speaks slower because standard English is not his first language.

I thought it was because he was lazy and shiftless.

Funny how the right wing crowd was absolutely outraged by Joe Biden's interrupting and yet has no qualms with Mitt having to get the last word on every. single. question. During the first debate it seemed like he got the last word every single time, and during the second debate he got visibly pissed off when Crowley refused to let him do it again.

Mitt looked like he was absolutely fuming when Obama ended the night on his comment about the 47%. I honestly expected him to interrupt Obama's final statement.

incendi: bv2112: Before we get all conspiracy-minded, could it perhaps be because there were occasions where a candidate did not use his full allotment of 2-minutes?

Uhh, I mostly saw them use the 2 - minute timer running out as the indication that they should maybe start thinking about how they might possibly eventually finish out their answer.

Yea, but for the most part they just started to set up their comments so they could end them when the moderator finally broke in. I think if the moderator never broken in neither one of them would ever stop talking.

Not that I blame them. These bogus, staged debates are mostly just campaign stops anyway where they can spew the standard talking points (although this one was a bit more interesting than normal), so they might as well take advantage all they can and force the moderator to be the one to enforce timing.

I think that was Lehrer's biggest mistake. He assumed politicians would just play by the rules when he should have known they were just going to talk and talk and talk until he told them to shut up.

As far as mistakes go, that's right up there with getting involved in a land war in Asia.

I'd like to live in a world with unicorns, rain that is made of candy and gold bricks, and political debates that didn't require third party moderation.

The hilarious thing is, he didn't even learn his lesson after that. He tried the exact same thing again with the "Have you looked at your pension?!" bit. I don't even know what he was trying to accomplish there.

Obama got the first question from the college kid asking about his prospects for a job after college. Obama rambled on and on about factory jobs, just what the kid went to college for Mr. Pres, working on the line in a factory, thanks for not listening to and then not answering the question but drawing out the answer.

thurstonxhowell: Ted Kennedy's Brain Tumor: There's a singular gripe I can see regarding the moderator and that was her "fact check" that needed its' own fact check.

Obama called it an act of terror. Romney said he did not call it an act of terror. Both events were recorded on video. You can watch them. If you can't watch them because you're at work or something, the transcripts are available all over the web. What further fact checking do you need?

The moderator even tried to rescue Romney by essentially saying "There's this other retarded point you probably wanted to raise which is technically correct", but by then it was too late.

vygramul: I don't believe employers should tell someone whether they could have contraceptive care of not.

--Mitt Romney, consistently ignorant of what the Republican position is. And, really, he doesn't actually care what it is.

Actually, I thought this was an example of Mitt lying by using weasel words. He wants the public to think that Obama is lying when he says Mitt and the GOP want to limit access to contraceptives. So he says -specifically- that he thinks all women should have access to contraceptives. But he very specifically doesn NOT say that insurance should cover it. So, sure, you can have contraceptives... IF YOU PAY FOR THEM OUT OF YOUR OWN POCKET. Otherwise, he DOES believe that employers should be allowed to prevent their insurance companies from covering contraceptives.

He's still a liar.

This sub-atomic dissection of the debates by the media has got to stop. People are mostly intelligent enough to make up their own minds, and the ones who aren't are confused enough already; this isn't helping them any.

Actually I believe the factory jobs he was discussing were skilled jobs for engineers who design indstrial processes. And maintenance engineers that repair and maintain robotics and equipment. You know high paying high end technology jobs that also help us improve our manufactoring base.

I guess you were away the week after the first debate when every third word out of an Obama supporter's mouth was "Jim Lehrer"

The 2nd debate was pretty much a wash, maybe a slight edge to Obama, but of course if you're an Obama supporter, you're going to think Obama killed him and Romney lied instead of realizing they both dance around the truth.

The moderator was out of line jumping on Romney. While Obama said "acts of terror" in his speech, he was miles from stating the attack was an organized operation, and the administration's public stance for the first week after the attack mirrored this.

How the hell is Mitt going to create 12 million jobs? He might as well announce that he's going to cure cancer. Talk is cheap, and most non-partisan economists think his economic plan is ridiculous.

One thing I noticed is that he continually got the unemployment numbers wrong by about 12 million. Maybe that's his plan. He'll start using the BLS numbers after getting into office and claim credit for getting jobs for the 12 million phantom jobless.
