That sounds like the recipe for a salad. "Florence" means it contains spinach.

Chariset: RAAAFT-B?

Okay, awkward initials aside, that's not such a bad name, especially compared to most celebrity children names. With celebs it's usually some weird-ass first name that has nothing to do with anything, or even a first name second name combo (like Pilot Inspektor, f%$# you Jason Lee). Rosalind, on the other hand, is a perfectly normal sounding first name, albeit with a somewhat underused (but not unusual) spelling. Point is, if I was a teacher and I saw "Rosalind Thurman-Busson" on my class roster I wouldn't even blink.

The string of names in the middle is a little weird, but honestly when's the last time you had to tell anyone your full middle name(s)? All they ever want is the initial.

/I have to tell people my full middle name all the time
//They don't believe my middle initial is H
///My actual initials are THC
////Yes, mom was a hippie in the 60s, why do you ask?

So, she's got a few extra middle names that no one will never hear?

I apparently made it through high school, without the school finding out my middle name. Just the initial.

Lionel Mandrake: Remember when celebrities gave their kids totally normal names like Moon Unit?

The "Unit" part was her middle name. She usually went by just "Moon", if I'm not mistaken.

So, effectively, Rosalind Thurmond-Busson.

What's wrong with that? The rest just makes her sound Catholic.

2012-10-18 07:23:12 AM
Eh. The girl's first name is Rosalind, which is perfectly normal, if a little old-fashioned. Presumably that's what she'll go by, or some variation like "Rosie" or "Roz."

I don't have a problem with the string of odd middle names; they won't be calling her by them.

It's not like the parents named her Electric Fan Ottoman Mouse Iced Tea Backpack. (A list of random objects in my field of vision at the moment.)

Ah the Thurman-Busson. The theorized elusive stupid particle.

Her name is Uma.

UMA.

I give her a pass. She gave her kid a less stupid name than her own.

Also, am I the only one who read one of those middle names as Autotune?

Wiki:

Uma is a given name of Indian or Hebrew/Aramaic origin.

Indian Meaning: Uma (goddess) is the name of a Hindu goddess (Parvati) and also means "Mother" or "Lady of the Mountains". The name also means "tranquility" in Sanskrit and "bright" in Hindi/Sanskrit.

I've got nothing against Rosalind, especially since my toddler is named Rosalyn. The endless middle names are strange, but not something that is a big deal. However, Uma and "Luna" is a bit too similar.

Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence Thurman-Busson

I suppose using the middle name for a nickname is rather common, since it is the 4th out of 7 names.

And FTA - his other kids are "Arpad Flynn Alexander and Aurelius Cy Andrea", so this looks like his crazy naming thing, not hers.

I hereby suggest having a three-strikes law about bizarre baby names. Strike one, you get something like a $500 fine. Strike 2, a $1000 fine. Strike 3, you're forbidden from naming children altogether.

i think they said she will be known by her friends as luna.

i'm sorry, but i don't think you're supposed to be able to create your children's nicknames before the fact.

if you're nicknaming them before they get a chance to exist, then that should be their name, not nickname

I just made a new character-- An Imperial with no combat or magic skills whatsoever-- And named him "Kevin". He doesn't fight. He hires people to fight for him, while he hides. Any equipment or treasure he gets is passed out to his hirelings, and then the rest is sold for profit. I've promised myself I won't advance him in any skills that would be useful in a fight. He focuses on speech, sneaking, crafts (smithing, alchemy), and picking locks (his dad was a locksmith). He looks completely average, doesn't wear any armor (just nice clothes), and his goal is to accumulate as much wealth as possible while paying as little as possible to his employees.

While there are plenty of ass-hatted celebrities who give insane monikers to their progeny, how much of this particular case is due to "crazy celebrity syndrome", versus "crazy Thurman family"? Remember, this is a woman whose parents named her Uma Karuna Thurman.
