Seems like we need a Sadhu tradition, as in India. Japan, too, I believe, has ascetic, hill-dwelling homeless monks. It's been viable life path for thousands of years in most traditional cultures.

It's a shame they'll likely chase him off and get him back on the grid.

Isn't hermitage, or being a hierophant or whatever, one of the Roman Catholic church's most hallowed sacraments? What kind of nation would squander a desert by not supporting one-man enclaves of Christian mystics?
