Can you make trades during the postseason?

2012-10-17 07:16:16 PM
marlins have anything left to trade?

2012-10-17 07:16:37 PM
A couple things
a) PTI and Larkin/Schilling seemed to be pushing the "this is punitive, there is something more" angle pretty hard tonight. Then, this gets leaked. What in the hell is going on with the Yankees?
2) Did he really try and pick up a model with the ol' "letter on a baseball" thing during game 1? Would that make it easier for the Yankees to realize ARod is sucking right now?
d) How in the hell are they going to possibly trade him? Any team is going to force them to eat 80m or more.

thisiszombocom: marlins have anything left to trade?

Bell, Reyes, Buerhle, and Morrison for Arod and 90m

The Yankees get Jeter's replacement and Reyes is back in NYC!

2012-10-17 07:18:48 PM
2013 (age 37): $28 million
2014 (age 38): $25 million
2015 (age 39): $21 million
2016 (age 40): $20 million
2017 (age 41): $20 million

Plus he's got $30m in "marketing bonuses" for certain HR milestones from 660 to 763.

There's no way they get any club to even the table without agreeing to eat at least half those numbers, right?

2012-10-17 07:20:11 PM
Why don't they just dump him on the Dodgers? The Red Sox cleared most of their terrible contracts that way, and hell, even got a couple of B prospects in return.

2012-10-17 07:21:36 PM
A-Rod's done. Granderson is out of the lineup tonight. They just need to blow up the team.

WTF Indeed: A-Rod's done. Granderson is out of the lineup tonight. They just need to blow up the team.

No that would be too easy. They need to suffer.

I can haz non cellar dweller now?

When ARod was traded to the Yankees, the Rangers were on the hook for $67M of his contract, as I recall. Did the 2007 contract get them out of that, even though the original contract would have run through 2009?

A-Rod just deflected a "is there a rift between you and Girardi" question.

Why the hell would the Marlins do that?

Because they're the Marlins!

Trade is supposed to be Heath Bell and his $20m for A-Rod and 80m-90m.

Sorry, we already got Juan Uribe to stink up the hot corner.

Actually, Luis Cruuuuuuuuz stepped up quite a bit and took over the third base position with his bat, and he's got a decent glove to boot. Cruz/Hanley on the left side of the infield, maybe Gordon at second if he learns how to hit and throw.

Now we just need to send Uribe down to rookie ball so we can clear a spot on the 25-man roster...

This isn't basketball. Heck, this doesn't apply to basketball either.

They need to put the best team they can on the field. Now, and in the future. If that involves A-Rod on the bench, whatever. There's no big problem that they have to blow up.

They're the Yankees. If they want to add another 50m in salary for pitching, they can do it. Whatever. "Starting over" only makes sense when you're not one of the best teams in baseball.

czetie: When ARod was traded to the Yankees, the Rangers were on the hook for $67M of his contract, as I recall. Did the 2007 contract get them out of that, even though the original contract would have run through 2009?

He exercised a clause in that contract to void the last three years. The Rangers are off the hook.

2012-10-17 08:03:23 PM
I was hearing this on LeBatards Show here in South Florida today and the way they made it seem was that the yankees just wanted to get rid of A-Rod and would pay a majority of the contract, essentially giving the Marlins free A-Rod. David Samson, the team's President was also on the show later said this was the first he heard about it. Not that I believe that. They didnt mention the heath Bell part although getting rid of him has been a focus seemingly. Good Lord those pre-season contracts were awful, though I give them credit for trying to spend some money for a change.

FTA: The New York Yankees are in discussions with Miami to trade Alex Rodriguez to the Marlins, according to Keith Olbermann, with the Yanks taking on most of A-Rod's remaining salary in the deal.

If that is the case, aside from A-Rod's baggage...Why not?

2012-10-17 08:08:43 PM
But he's a True Yankee™. They can't just let him go!

2012-10-17 08:17:38 PM
They'll get 5 or 6 players from them, then say "so long, and thanks for all the fish".

Why that's just as credible evidence as...no. I can't even complete that sentence.

2012-10-17 08:23:33 PM
Whether or not the Yankees play Rod they will pay Rod. And I'm okay with that.

2012-10-17 08:24:51 PM
Is the plan to give them Alex Rodriquez when they think they're getting Alex Rodriguez?

2012-10-17 08:31:15 PM
A-Rod should have been chasing balls instead of chasing tail.

He was chasing balls. Chasing them out of the strike zone.

Wouldn't surprise me, Loria is this stupid but then he lucked into owning a MLB team, still a shame we couldn't contract the expos and twins when they first tried.

OVER JETERS DEAD BODY!!

2012-10-17 08:54:47 PM
The Yankees were obviously drunk when they signed him to the most expensive 10 year contract... and it seems they're finally shaking off the hangover, but it seems it might be too late to take the morning after pill.

2012-10-17 08:57:18 PM
The Yankees being willing to pay more to have a guy not play for them than half the league pays in payroll. That tells you everything you need to know about MLB

The Yankees will eat probably about 15 million dollars a year of his contract. I was also thinking, because of the way the Yankees treated him in this past off season, he would go elsewhere. I was thinking Tampa.

2012-10-17 09:06:38 PM
If they could somehow trade that albatross of a contract, they would also get the advantage of being able to move Jeter to 3B.

Right now, PECOTA projects A-Rod to be hitting .201/.299/.341 in the last year of that contract, which would make him basically unplayable. They figure him at about 10 wins over replacement (total) over 5 years, assuming he's reasonably healthy for the duration. Which he won't be.

He's maybe worth $30M, accounting for likely injury/health issues. He's owed $114M, plus:

- $10M signing bonus ($2M paid upon approval, $1M paid each Jan. 15, 2009-2013, $3M paid Jan. 15, 2014) - $4M left
- $30M marketing agreement based on home run milestones ($6M each for reaching 660, 714, 755 and tying and breaking major league HR record) - likely to get the first two if he plays, so $12M.
- Full no-trade protection

So really, he's owed $130M... and he has to agree to the trade. So the Yankees might have to chip in $20M/yr for 5 years, or close to it, plus the fair price of whatever they get back.

Texas doesn't owe a dime, by the way-- their last year of chipping in for A-Rod's salary was 2010.

Wasn't there a big A-rod announcement during a red sox series a year or two ago?

I'm surprised this didn't leak during the WS between the Tigers and cards/giants.

Lost Thought 00: The Yankees being willing to pay more to have a guy not play for them than half the league pays in payroll. That tells you everything you need to know about MLB

Let me see if I've got this right: The Yankees can afford to pay almost half the payroll of Oakland to have some lazy has-been do nothing?

And they wonder why the NFL has buried them.

For what it is worth Cashman denied it 100% pregame.

And why would the Marlins do this?

He can't play SS any more. The Rays have Longoria wrapped up cheap through 2016 (13:$6M, 14:$7.5M club option ($3M buyout), 15:$11M club option, 16:$11.5M club option).

So he'd be DHing, which lowers his value even further.

He'll go somewhere where he can play 3B. It's the only way he'd even be worth the ~$30M I estimated above.

Quick: Name any of the three Marlins 3Bs who started frequently after Hanley was traded.

He's still a big name, he's Latino, and the Marlins have shown a willingness to spend too much on past-their-prime veterans. No one will take A-rod's current contract, but they might take him at a 60%-70% discount or so. I'm not saying it's likely, but it's not impossible.

People still won't show up. He'll, ARod probably wouldn't show up to the games if he was in Miami.

Of course he denied it. That's what he is supposed to do. As for why? IDK. Why are the Mets still paying Bobby Bonilla $1M / year? Teams do dumb stuff to fill seats.

It would explain why he is not in the linup: they don't want to risk an injury that would scuttle the deal.

You underestimate how stupid Loria really is, if it wasnt for being lucky he would still own a minor league team.

Honest question from Seattle: if FailRod goes, does that make them more likely to keep Ichiro around for a year or two?

Alive A Rod will cost the Yankees too much money and too many chances in the playoffs. He knows this. So do the Yankees fans. He will go quietly to another place.
