Yeah, all that was about as useful as the Newton.

heh

Be that as it may, it may have had awesome features, but it doesnt matter if they suck donkey balls.

I still remember the browser wars and the effect it had on the Mac. 5 minutes average of web surfing before your damn machine crashed from a shiatty bugged-ridden browser on an even more shiatty cooperative multitasking OS.

That might have been bad, but there is nothing in this world as bad as the Windows 386 promo video. If you've never seen this thing, settle back in wonder. First two minutes are boring (and this video is actually cut down from the original, where it took seven minutes of utter boredom before it flew totally off the rails), but give it a bit of time - it's so worth it.

Dang, the floppy disk feature is bad ass. And the x86 pentium expansion card! Where can I get one of these?

Can't find the reference right now, but didn't Apple get sued when they misleadingly claimed "it runs Windows programs", when, in fact, they meant to say "It'll run programs that have both Mac and Windows versions"?

He did mention "using an emulator such as SoftWindows" or installing an emulator card. I guess you missed that part.

I spent a lot of time looking at a little cartoon bomb back in that era. We had a CT scan imaging program that was written for Mac and we couldn't port it over to our SGI suite.

Nothing ported anywhere in 1996.

Holy flying hell. I've often felt like I would go insane when having issues with Windows, but she just had a major mental break down.

Wow. Even in the 90's Apple was full of it.

"You can't do this stuff on the PC unless you install an expensive card."

"Want to run PC apps on a Mac? Just install this expensive card."

I actually had one of those PPC macs with the Pentium card. I think it may still be somewhere in my mom's garage. The 68K Quadra at least would run something other than System 7 pretty well.

There's a reason Apple bought NeXT.
There's a reason Microsoft shiatcanned Win9X.
There's a reason Microsoft is trying desperately to kill off a lot of their legacy Win16/32 compatibility.
There's a reason AMD killed off v86.
Things move along.

But be sure to generate your ssh keys before you throw sshd=yes into rc.conf; it took a good 50 minutes to generate them on that 25 Mhz machine. //NetBSD user

Ummm, no, the Youtube clip was simply describing the PC world back then.

You had to buy and install a video card to get Mac-quality video.

You had to buy and install a card for Mac-quality sound.

You had to buy an add-on card to use scanners and external hard drives.

And you had to cross your fingers and hope your PC worked with your add-on cards and the awful proprietary software.

I think GreenAdder was pointing out the fact that Apple had just finished shiatting all over PCs for 'Expensive cards' and then half a minute later, it recommends installing an intel processor in your apple to get cross-platform compatibility. Even apples didnt come with everything. You'd have to spend on extra hardware.

I'd guess one intel processor and its expansion slot hardware would be more expensive than an Adlib soundcard, a parallel port card, a 14.4 modem, etc.

But the Intel card for the Mac was a rare option. Few people needed or wanted it. ALL PCs needed extra hardware to simply play sound and video.

It's a good thing I didn't have a mouthful of coffee at ~2:10. Plus, the music from Mission: Impossible, really?

Also, for some reason, watching the Mac video made me think of this.

Gaming on the Mac back then was a pain. When they finally did port a version for the mac there was usually a better game out for the PC by then. It was mainly a lack of video cards and the smaller install base that made game companies skip making a Mac version. I did have a SuperMac 9600 with a 3DFX Voodoo 3 card. I had to flash the card with a Mac rom to get it to work but it played Unreal very nicely.
I remember waiting for Valve or a Mac porting company (don't really remember) to finish Half-life but they never finished porting it. I loved it when a company put out a Mac and PC version in the same box. I did finally build a PC for gaming and use that now.

In 1996, when that video was made, sound and video cards were standard in PC. In fact they were already being built in the motherboard.

Emulators do not require any board, they are software. And yes, SoftWindows was slow.

The other option was an actual 486DX2/66 computer on a card, and it was introduced at $699 and it was not slow.
