I wonder how many immunosuppressants this guy has to take everyday to prevent his body from rejecting his face.

That's really quite amazing. I think Eyes With Out A Face is my favorite nutzo surgeon trying to repair his love's mug movie.  Mad Love is another great mad surgeon movie.  Peter Lorre puts the wrong hands on the piano player.  This spawned a whole murderer's hand mini-genre with The Beast With Five Fingers, The Hand, The Crawling Hand, The Pervy Mitt, Bang Goes The Finger, To Clap With Satan

I made a few of those titles up but it could happen.

After shooting himself in the face in 1997, he lived as a recluse in Virginia, US, for 15 years, shielding himself behind a mask and only emerging at night.

Someone should write a musical about this man!

Oh this must have happened somewhere else in the world where people keep telling me medical care is so much better...

Oh did this happen in the United States? I'm simply shocked.

You can argue over who has the best system for paying for medical care. You cannot argue who has the best medical care, because that's right here, in the United States.

If you have unlimited money, you can buy the best health care there is to buy in the USA. Especially when it comes to cosmetic surgery. This is irrelevant to most of us who don't have unlimited money.

I know I'm being a dick here but I can't help feel kind of annoyed that this guy received the best medical care and procedures the world has to offer after he tried to kill himself.

I just can't help but feel someone out there is a bit more deserving. How about 100 kids who are born with cleft pallets?

And if you want it to look at it another way, this is still a rare, risky, experimental procedure, so would you rather the experiments be carried out on someone who tried to kill himself, or kids?

If you read FNB's link he was basically a guinea pig for the military who paid for the surgery through grants. Presumably they used him as research to aid them in treating severe battlefield disfigurements. If he was the best candidate for this because of the gun related injury and it will help our soldiers who take a shot to the head and are disfigured, then I am all for it. Children with cleft palates probably wouldnt work for this particular kind of research.

Grant funding from the Office of Naval Research (ONR) in the Department of Defense to Dr. Stephen Bartlett has supported the University of Maryland basic and clinical research program in vascularized composite transplantation leading up to and supporting this groundbreaking face transplant. The ONR funds medical research to support military operational medicine and clinical care of returning veterans. In addition to conducting research, the University of Maryland supports military medicine in a variety of ways, including training military medical staff prior to deployment and performing organ transplant surgeries for patients at Walter Reed/Bethesda National Naval Medical Center.

/Also the before and after is nothing short of amazing.

After other socialist medicine places had done it already:

Full face transplant

On 20 March 2010, a team of 30 Spanish doctors carried out the first full face transplant on a man injured in a shooting accident.[18] It became the first full face transplant in the world.[1]

On 8 July 2010, the French media reported that a full face transplant, including tear ducts and eyelids, was carried out at the Creteil Henri-Mondor hospital.

I'd heard a lot of good things about Preacher, so I started reading it last year. I got about 20 issues in before I fizzled out entirely. I wasn't too impressed. I think that maybe if I'd read it closer to its publication, when it was fresher and I was younger, I may have liked it better. But one or both of us hasn't aged well.

Well this one was the first to: "In a remarkable 36-hour operation transplant surgeons at the University of Maryland performed the most extensive full face transplant. The face transplant included both jaws, teeth and tongue. This marks the first time in the world that a full face transplant was performed by a team of plastic and reconstructive surgeons with specialized training and expertise in craniofacial surgery and reconstructive microsurgery." from FNB's link

Oh randomjsa.......when are you not wrong?

You should try the George Costanza "if every instinct you have is wrong then the oposite would have to be right" thing. Just try it one day, perhaps you too can get a hot date and a job with the Yankees all in one day.

Coolest story bro: I was doing a fourth year elective on the plastic surgery service at Maryland in April, and I saw this guy pretty much daily when he looked like this:

It was in Wizard, back when Wizard was a price guide, and before the internet made them irrelevant, then defunct.

/Wizard had some decent stuff in the old days... mail-in 1/2 issues with original stories, a little original content like this or the Quantum and Woody story, the Milk and Cheese board game...

I had pretty much the same experience, but with The Watchmen. I'd always heard it mentioned as one of the greatest comics/graphic novels of all time. When I finally got around to reading it, I was a little disappointed. I mean, it wasn't bad, but I found myself almost struggling to finish it.

Preacher, though, was the first graphic novel I ever read, and I loved it. This was several years after it had ended, so I was able to tear through them as fast as I could read them. I liked the overall story and the sense of humor that drifted anywhere between absurd and biatch black on a whim. I've always wondered if maybe Preacher hadn't ruined it for me, that if I'd read The Watchmen first it might have held up better. Or it could just be that it was written during the height of Cold War fear and paranoia, and while I was alive then I was much to young to really identify with any of those sentiments. Or it could simply be a matter of personal tastes.

Oh, and subby - It's just Preacher, there is no 'the' in front of it.

/ pet peeve
