Oh, "classic" means 2004. Yes, let's have another KOTOR 2. That'll be ... fun?

I'd script for free unlimited hot pockets, and I don't even have a neckbeard...

If Planescape Torment, Icewind Dale, Fallout, and Baldur's Gate don't classify as "classics", then you need to get your head checked.

Is this the one with the 2014 release date? A bunch of 'neckbeards' as been said now no longer have to answer to a publisher and can now get 'get it right' before releasing their game. Wow, this is great news isn't it?

I'm going to be the Debby Downer here and say you won't see anything until late 2015 at best because said neckbeards won't be able to manage their time and money properly. I'd more expect the money to be sucked up into a 3 year party time at the studio and some lame excuses before they shut down.

you know, that pitch really re-defines the old chestnut about selling a bridge in brooklyn, doesn't it? oh, its an MMO and SP game, thats F2P, has a world class physics engine, realistic modeling of ships, allows you and your friends to fly ships together doing different tasks and is being put together by a guy who has been out of the industry for decades... and in case that wasn't good enough, he's not doing it through kickstarter or one of the established sites where there are rules about what he does with the money AND this money wont go to finance the game, it will just prove to potential venture capatilists (who, you'll understand he can't officially name, but trust him, they are really real) who will then finance it, and it will all be out in some future timeframe that will be defined as in a few years, probably.

Can you offer/demand partial ownership as one of the perks at a certain level with Kickstarter? If I ever give a guy $1000 to help make the Copenhagen Wheel a reality or whatever, and he makes a million dollars off of it, it'd be nice if I could get a return other than an autographed widget.

Doing that would be selling securities, and the SEC would need to be involved.

I was excited about that till I actually read the production history of the game and the company, and the real nitty gritty of what they are doing.

Plus they cancelled shipment a day before release already.

I'm not interested any more. I'd rather buy it from gog and use the tutu mods or something.

Feargus Urquhart, founder of Black Isle, is still the CEO of Obsidian.
Chris Avellone, lead designer of Torment, is still with Obsidian.
Both were two of the lead designers of Fallout 2.
James Ohlen (BG Series) was always with Bioware.

While is isn't the exact teams who created the classics, there's a solid core group of talent working on this game:

- Josh Sawyer (lead designer on Icewind Dale II)
- Tim Cain (producer/lead designer for Fallout, lead for Arcanum, Temple of Elemental Evil, and Vampire: TM while at Troika)
- Chris Avellone (lead designer for Planescape Torment
- George Ziets (writer for Neverwinter Nights 2 and Fallout: New Vegas)
- Feargus Urquhart (founder of Black Isle)

I'm hopeful this group can pull off something special...will need to wait and see.

Probably not, because that means you're issuing ownership shares, or stock, in the company to the public through a process not approved by the SEC. If Obsidian is feeling generous after the game is a hit and everyone in the company becomes a millionaire, they could send you a big fat check out of the collective goodness of their hearts. But there's no legal method to demand such a payment.

Some of those bonuses are pretty interesting.

My 2 favorite PC games are Wasteland and X-wing. The Crowdsourced/kickstarter model has now given me a sequel to Wasteland, and the new Chris Roberts game is the first space combat sim game to come out in ages.

I've contributed to the Wasteland 2 and Project Eternity kickstarters and will be giving some cash to Star Citizen. I have fairly high hopes for all of them. Even if they come out bad, at least it was worth a try. I've spent more money on worse stuff.

2012-10-17 03:06:39 PM
As a very, very long time PC gamer, my priority list ... what I look for in an PC-RPG ... looks like this these days :

(in order from most to least important)

STABILITY. STABILITY. STABILITY. *cough*Sims 3*cough*Fallout New Vegas*cough*ES Skyrim* More than 1 crash a day, and it's a return.
Interface responsiveness/intuitiveness. A Ferrari is near useless with a rectangle steering wheel.*cough*Skyrim*cough*
Witty / captivating dialog that makes you want to see what the next guy will say.
Battle System
User Modification-friendly. Extends shelf life, fosters community, lets user fix aspects they don't like but others do like. *cough*SW:TOR*cough*Amalur*
Story that is interesting but doesn't use unnecessarily complexity as a crutch
Graphics
Sound
Music

Don't care if the game has 2005 graphics as long as the engine is modern (looking at you, SW:TOR) and runs clean and doesn't crash constantly.

2012-10-17 03:32:19 PM
Yeah, "beta" doesn't mean what it used to. My wife and I got "beta" keys to Panda-Pokemon Warcraft whatever. Our accounts have been inactive for 2 years. Mine went inactive complete with a colorful language-ridden letter about one of their more questionable policies (they forcibly renamed one of my characters to give the name to someone with an active account ... just because their account was active) ... It was very odd that they chose my account, inactive and probably flagged as a terrorist of some sort, to beta test. I think it's just publicity and they do all their testing internally ahead of time.

Uzzah: Oh, "classic" means 2004. Yes, let's have another KOTOR 2. That'll be ... fun?

What's funny about this is that KOTOR 2 was an excellent game with an excellent plot. Most of its flaws are attributable to the publisher shoving the thing out the door early, though you can get a particular mod that unlocks most of the completed-but-not-implemented content buried in the game.

2012-10-17 03:49:18 PM
I contributed US$25, about €19, which will get me a free copy of the game once finished. With new releases often costing €49,95 and up I'd say that is a good deal. Especially if they manage to recapture the magic that was Baldurs Gate (mostly 2, but 1 was awesome to). I'm going to play PlaneScape again and talk people out of existence. Because fark people whose grasp on existing is so weak they can be conned out of it if I believe hard enough.

Lord Bear: and the new Chris Roberts game is the first space combat sim game to come out in ages.

X3: Albion Prelude came out less than a year ago. Even more exciting, the big sequel to the X3 series, X Rebirth, is supposed to be released this year.

If they would just slap some basic multiplayer capabilities on the X3 series, you would have the perfect space sim games. I'd love to be able to tool around the galaxy with 3 or 4 close friends in tow. I just can't figure out why they don't add that aspect into the X series games. I can't be the only one who desires that.

While Star Citizen sounds great, it's pretty big on promises and likely won't be released for 4 years or so since they haven't even started work on it.

If you are curious - the original ending that was cut to get it out the door is mostly still on the disk. Almost everything that happened on Malachor was different. Your jedi pupils face off against SIon and Traya alone and get beat. Various characters can die. Brilliant ending. There is a complete breakdown on a forum somewhere. Most of the voice work is in there too. It is really too bad, because the game was awesome until Malachor.
