When the evening ended, I was struck by a different thought: If Obama had performed this way at the first debate, the election would have been over.

Uh no, the "liberal media" would not have allowed the election to be over.

it's bizarre. obama absolutely cleaned romney's clock. but the pundits are saying that it's a draw or a slight obama victory.

The right can't admit defeat, ever. in their fantasy land, John McCain really won the election and Obama just swooped in and took the oath of office before McCain could get to the podium.

Go figure. I can't remember the last time a moderator had to step in to correct a candidate like that. To me it was a "boom headshot" moment, and I certainly couldn't have been the only one covering my my mouth and saying "oh NO he di'int" when Romney basically told the pres to sit down and shut up. How does Mitt NOT come across as the most arrogant douchebag on the planet when he's trying to talk down to the mother-farking President of the US? (though part of me wishes Obama hadn't been so gracious and instead gone all Josh Bartlett on Romney at that moment)

Pundits have to milk everything they can out of this election. If it was an obvious Obama victory they wouldn't have as much to talk about.

I'm shocked no one has had the guts to appoint a special prosecutor like they did for Clinton.

Obama could have pulled the Kali-Ma manoeuvre from Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom on Romney and the Press would have still said Mitt had "a good showing".

If there was ever any doubt that CNN was now a right-wing media source, that was cleared up after the debate when David Gergen apologized for calling the debate for Obama. He felt much more comfortable calling the first debate for Romney. Very obvious what their marching orders are. What ever happens, don't call a clear victory for Obama - Romney fine - but never Obama.

Nah. They don't have the stones to actually choose a side.

In Dante's Inferno, there's a group of people just outside the Gates of Hell, endlessly chasing a quickly moving banner and being pursued by a swarm of bees/wasps/hornets. These are the The Uncommitted, denied either punishment or salvation because of their moral stagnation.

I'm guessing most of the CNN team would be amongst them.

Then again, I imagine that if Romney hadn't kept going, Obama would've continued with "Oh, you were finished? Well, then, allow me to retort. What does Osama bin Laden look like?"

If Obama said lead paint chips was not a good idea for a breakfast cereal, they would give equal time to Michelle Bachman to rebut him.

In a way he's right. The last one is going to matter, if any of them do. Even if Obama had "won" the first one, he couldn't have stooped Romney from looking like a credible candidate.

He knew exactly how to get to Romney on a personal level. Romney does not like being challenged and becomes unhinged when he's bested.

It's a tough thing to do in a debate. You want to stay out of the way and let your opponent embarrass himself. But you risk allowing them to say things that should be challenged. It requires nimbleness. Obama totally lacked it in Debate I and relearned it Debate II.

I don't think it's that they *want* to drift rightward, they're just so enamored with pretending to be a "moderate" network that they don't see that they've become a combination of softball journalism and forced equivocation.

It's not that bizarre when you realize the only thing the pundits care about is to influence a photo finish horserace that keeps people tuning in. The last thing they want is for Obama to open up the lead to where it was before the first debate.

This is how McCain pwned Romney in 2008. Romney has a bad habit of talking down to everyone as though they're The Help, and he doesn't like being challenged by The Help. He can go from Robotic Talkingpoint Regurgitator to Massive Douche fairly quickly. It's amazing that no one has been able to draw him offsides with a hardcount until now in the debates. The GOP Primary was too much of an amateur night, and Obama was disengaged and "too cool for school" in the first debate.

Man, the news networks are REALLY trying hard to spin this. I know people were saying before the debate that they'd call it a draw no matter who won to keep the horse race going, but Obama and Romney didn't make it easy on them.

It's been interesting watching the Freepers and other RW forums react to it. They're dividing their time equally between inventing reasons why Romney really won the debate and desperately rigging online polls. You'd think if the former were true they wouldn't need to resort to the latter, but intellectual consistency has never been their strong point.

Because you are not the target of the debate. Undecided or swayable voters are.

My wife, who's voting Obama, thought he looked like an asshole last night. I'm pretty sure that's not the outcome he wanted. I honestly have no idea what impact last night's debate will have on those swing voters. I'll be keeping an eye on 538 over the next week or so though.

Oh, the liberal tears in this thread in denial that last night just wasn't enough.

You guys did everything possible to flood America and especially the swing states with the caricature that Romney was a retarded drooling version of Scrooge McDuck ("He murders women with cancer!"). When Romney smashed that image to pieces in the first debate, you lost the narrative. You can't get it back now no matter what you do. It doesn't help that Obama appears even more awkward in a debate as he does.

You had the greatest stacked deck in American political history and you still blew it.

Turns out we were right, weren't we? Obama gave him a chance to quit his false attack, and then went "alright, please proceed." When he was called out by both Obama and the moderator, he turned into the retarded drooling version of Scrooge McDuck.

He thought he was going to get away with it, but it turns out that Candy Crowley isn't Jim Lehrer.
