It's money in the bank for future generations. The price of oil will only continue to go up. When the world gets desperate, they'll pay us anything for what we have and in the future we'll be even better at getting it out of the ground safely.

I've thought this way for a long time. I hate the fact that a lot of the countries in our oil supply chain (or at least a fair number of the people who live in those countries) hate our guts. The only reason some of these countries have any power or influence at all is because of oil, so I'd be perfectly happy to see their supplies dry up, leaving us with our own domestic supply.

I see it as a long-term national security issue. I think it would be reasonable to subsidize exploration to locate future sources of supply (seismic work to ID promising formations, drilling test wells, etc.), but not actually pull it all out of the ground. That way when the day comes, production would be able to ramp up more quickly, zeroing in on the high-yield fields at first.

It's the clearest "... but liars use figures" example I can think of. Prices plunged to that level from the $3-$4 range for only a few weeks, during the worst of the shiatstorm. It just happened to coincide with the inauguration.

Net effect: Disingenuous assholes have an outlier to cherry-pick.

The US produces a small fraction of the worlds oil. The world's gas consumption is up.
