5,700 dead coho salmon? These punks better turn themselves in before the local fisherman find them. I love salmon fishing on the Great Lakes.

It was likely environmentalists by the way. October is coho salmon spawning month so they might have been trying to rub them off because they spawned. Also there is some level of butthurt in that the Coho Salmon is not native to the lakes. Atlantic Salmon were native to Lake Ontario at one point, but Pacific Salmon have been brought in to bolster the population and provide for sport fishing events.

Thanks for the overview. That makes much more sense. It clearly wasn't just "vandalism", it was some kind of attack. Eco terrorism makes much more sense than teens or some kind of corporate feud.

It's doubly pointless in that the salmon were brought in and had their numbers increased to eat the alewives (which were invasive via a canal). The alewives are gone and the salmon have been dying off left and right. Basically from the moment the DNR releases the salmon into Lake Huron it is a rush to catch them before they starve to death. Within a few years the DNR is likely going to admit this is just a giant waste of money and scratch the Lake Huron project. The Lake Michigan population is a bit better, but likely headed in the same ultimate direction.

Yep. In Lake Michigan they are now planting about 1/4 the amount of salmon to let the alewife population recover (but more trout to appease the fishermen). About time, too. I suspect the same will be done for Huron and the rest (except maybe Superior?).

I love Lake Michigan salmon and trout fishing, and it saddens me that they did this. Agreed that it is likely eco-terrorists (especially given the way they were killed via oxygen depletion).

At this point, all Free Press links need to be tagged as such, or the icon changed, because at least one moron per thread automatically assumes it's Freerepublic and needs it slowly spelled out to them. (Hint: Fark doesn't green them. The closest we get is Daily Kos links about FR.)

It's pretty easy. You pull a couple of boards so that the water level goes down, block the water intake, and voila! dead fish. You can lose the entire run if something clogs the water intake, even accidentally. They have to have constantly running water.

And I know this doesn't fit with your pre-conceived eco-terrorist profile, but environmentalists don't usually kill animals. See, we like animals. I know that's hard for some of you to imagine, since killing off several species for your own pleasure enhancement is just another day.

The Vandals are an 80s-era California pop/punk band. They've got a pretty upbeat, new wave sound and aesthetic, which of course puts them at odds with darker, goth-influenced bands. In particular, Austrian goth bands (or "Ostrogoths" as they are sometimes known) like Chalice, Cryptal Darkness, Darkwell, and Dreams of Sanity have been seen as a reaction against the bright colors and cheerful sarcasm used by the Vandals.

In the Great Lakes states, there are eco-terrorist (you could call them a twisted sort of environmentalist) who are against planting salmon and trout in the great lakes (since it is introducing a native species). These people would kill said salmon and trout, despite the fact they love animals.

One way of forcing someone to stop doing something is to make it cost prohibitive. If you're A) extreme enough to take severe actions and B) willing to justify some anarchy, death, and chaos as being for the "greater good", sometimes you do horrible things in the name of your cause. Needless to say, the more you're willing to justify to yourself, the faster you tend to take the train to crazy town.

If those fish are viewed as invasive species, it would benefit the environment. I.e. preventing the release of Asian Carp into the great lakes (by killing) would certainly fit the environmentalism definition. Environmentalism means caring about the environment, not necessarily "all animals must live"

2012-10-17 02:39:05 PM

venerant: The article says they died of oxygen related issues. Does anyone know what kind of oxygen related issues would kill a fish?

Why yes, yes I do. Fish take in dissolved oxygen from the water through their gills and expel carbon dioxide the same way. Once the oxygen in the water in which they are in is exhausted, they suffocate, just as we would eventually suffocate in a sealed room. Atmospheric oxygen gets into the water by the process of aeration, primarily by disruption of the surface. Hence, moving water, such as in a stream or a run in a hatchery is continuously aerated. The vandals moved the fish into an area where the water is not circulated and, therefor, not aerated and they consumed all the available oxygen and died.

the fellow above mentioned a "by any means necessary" type of mentality - which is hard to agree with.

you point out the 'invasive specie' angle (cwutididthar) which IMHO holds more weight.
but are they even making that claim? are they making a case for why that new specie is not a positive thing? (i.e. it decimates other local populations / pollutes the water / edges out local habitat etc.)

and if their whole point is "caring about the environment", I still submit that destroying it is a strange way of going about it.

furthermore - & apologies for getting all philosophical here - but who are they to say what is "natural" or not? isn't everything that happens on this planet essentially "natural" ? so when it doesn't fit their view of "natural" the response is to kill it?

confusing

These two sentences are where it all breaks down. Some people can't grasp that the environment now is the result of whatever factors were in play right before humans showed up, and species were popping up and dying off forever. They know, on some intellectual level, that they are supposed to be upset at the RATE of change, but frankly that's complicated and hard to figure out, so it's easier to just be outraged at everything people do that changes anything from say, some arbitrary point in 1852.

as with anything, too much in one direction or another is usually met with poor results.

the examples you give are perfect:
gmo food - pro: get to grow food in harsh land / con: farmers getting crushed by huge corps that own the rights to their 'product' and shut down anyone that may have a seed on their property

nuke power: cheap energy / fukishima

It's sort of like Jurassic Park though. The barrier only has to fail once.

I saw the salmon run near my home recently. It was pretty cool seeing the fish going by, but part of me was also distressed since there were barely any compared to past years. They're trying to restore the rivers before introducing native salmon again, but its going to take a long time.
