The man has lived his entire life in air conditioning and never needed money. I think unless you've worked because you had to, like not eating, paying rent, buying clothes for your kids, you have no idea what 90% of America does every day. He doesn't empathize because he can't. He has no concept of what life is like for the people he's trying to empathize with.

At least GWB could fake it, and GHWB had seen combat, which has an emotional toll even on guys born rich (see also JFK). FDR's polio I think gave him that kind of understanding his upbringing would never have normally allowed. Mitt, just doesn't have the capability. And it's just one of many reasons I can't stand the guy.

Cool song, and I used to write lines from it on my textbook covers made out of brown grocery bags. The biology teacher let the hamster escape once. In retrospect I guess smoking was dumb, but I was young and assumed I was invincible. That was the year I almost got with that one skinny chick.

Romney's a dick. The longer the debate went on, the more flustered and put-upon he seemed. By the end, he was reciting Fox News talking points under the apparent impression that they were zingers. Obama, on the other hand, lost his slight stammer over the course of the debate and emerged as Mr. Smooth. Calling this one's as much of a no-brainer as calling the first one was.

On a related note: Someone told me that Candy Crowley was named after her favorite food. I googled that but couldn't find anything. Does anyone out there know whether this is true or not?

That this election is even close baffles me. Hardline Republicans don't trust him. He's easily the most socially awkward candidate, besting even John Kerry's ridiculous '04 campaign. To hear him speak you have to wonder if he even knew how the washing machine in his photo-op worked.

I know he's successful, but being a vulture capitalist doesn't earn any respect points from me. And yeah, the guy is a complete and utter asshole.

So why is the popular vote looking so close? America. We get the assholes we deserve.

I want to know what that college kid's major was? Because he asked about how he could get a job, and Obama told him all about bringing manufacturing back to Detroit. Yeah, that's really what a biochem major wants to do. Put car parts together on an assembly line at whatever minimum wage the union strong armed their way into.

Or, if he was in a major that would lend itself towards assembly line work, maybe they should have said, "You went to college. To major in Art History? In 2010, you thought this would be a good idea? And you used your own money?????" An answer like that would have instantly bought my vote.

Yes, there is a lot more to manufacturing than the guy who stands on the floor bolting widgets together.

Also, in response to Mitts' accusation that China has stolen designs and intellectual property from Americans, that's not how I see it. I think it would be more accurate to say, we piled designs and intellectual property onto a silver tray, manufacturing facilities American companies wanted to build in China in order to exploit comparatively weak Chinese labor, environmental and safety laws, and we begged China to accept this platter heaped with intellectual property. Now, we're angry they accepted.

possible. also i think he wanted to keep things civilized and still had hopes that he could conquer the partisian divide that is choking this Nation out, but i think he's beginning to realize that you can't reason with a f*cking republican and more than with a Psychopath.

and the reason is is that a republican (and a few dems too) is only interested in himself and his money. that is all. like a Psychopath, a republican is unable to connect with others and feel empathy and work for the common good.

people think Psychopaths are violent. some are, but most are not. and they are everywhere now in the land of the Free.

By the way, did anybody notice that Mitt thought he was saving the middle class a lot in taxes by saying "We'll eliminate taxes on interest on your savings?" I don't know about you, but I made approximately 3 dollars on my savings last year. I checked around with friends and family, and not one person told me they made more than 10 dollars from their savings. Interest rates on savings accounts are in the 0.25% to 1% range.

It just goes to show you how out of touch he is. He actually things that if you make enough money on your savings that the tax is noticeable, you're "middle class." Just like if you want to pay for college, ask your parents for money! *headdesk*

Apple's doing a fine job with that business model. Depending on their major, college grads work in their HQ in Cupertino (engineers, scientists, etc) or in their retail stores (English lit, underwater basketweaving, architecture, etc).

Does FoxConn have their own people to design the machines that run in the factories, or is that done here too? I guess being physically closer to the plant is helpful about 2 or 3 weeks a year at that job.

Serious question: What are you basing that on? Do you genuinely believe all this "long-game" tripe, or is it more likely that the dude just had an off-night, particularly after being bombarded by a brand new Romney that no one recognized from the last 18 months?

I'm not trying to attack you, but am curious as to what leads you this conclusion.

I watched the debate, there were dozens of opportunities for Obama to say "that's not true." Am I honestly to believe Obama simply didn't know what Romeny's previous positions were? Or even his own for that matter after a couple weeks of preparation?

Also consider they spent the entire week prior claiming he was going to lose, and if that's not enough, watch the Clinton and McCain debates. He did the same thing.

And he just performed last night exactly as I predicted 2 weeks ago. He turned the charm on like a switch.  Hell it was turned on less than 24 hours after the first debate -- unloading on mitt with all kinds of shiat at a rally. He didn't have an "off night." Lunaville: Also, in response to Mitts' accusation that China has stolen designs and intellectual property from Americans, that's not how I see it.

WHAT?

I think it would be more accurate to say, we piled designs and intellectual property onto a silver tray, manufacturing facilities American companies wanted to build in China in order to exploit comparatively weak Chinese labor, environmental and safety laws, and we begged China to accept this platter heaped with intellectual property. Now, we're angry they accepted.

I said the same thing. I asked my wife (she pays the taxes) how much we earn from capital gains and interest on our savings account. When she told me I joked and said we could use the savings to buy a new DVD. Crazy rich people like Romney, on the other hand, have so much money in the bank that they actually earn real money on the interest on their savings account. Everyone he knows earns real money on the interest in their savings account.
After he said that I wanted to Obama to be honest and just tell the audience that when Romney says he wants to lower the capital gains tax and the taxes on interest on savings accounts, he is only interested in lowering his own tax burden. I wanted him to be completely honest about it and say it in plain language that everyone can understand. Mitt wants to be president so he can pay less taxes than he already does.

I'm not the one who originally asked the question, but I guess I should ask this: did Obama then plan for a complete turn-around in polls after the first debate? That seems like an awfully huge risk. Sorry, but I see the "Long game" as a completely unlikely scenario. Not calling out Romney's lies the first time felt more like he was hoping that the American public would recognise the bullshiat as such, but much like the Death Panels narrative, it led to the Republicans framing the discussion instead of Bullshiat Detectors pinging. At best, I'll concede that maybe this was part of some plan by Obama, but it really bit him in the ass and didn't play out well...but the more likely answer is that Obama did poorly the first go-round and got a fire lit under his ass for last night's debate.

In the last debate Romney also said he would "help" the middel class giving you $25K or $50K in deductions for health care. "pick a number" he said. How that is going to help someone that does not have $50K a year to spend on healthcare in the first place I don't know. How getting a tax a deduction when you have to spend your life's savings on health care helps I don't know. Might help a Richie Rich that has a lot of money though.

As I've said before, I think that that was the general plan (be a bit weak on the first one to come out stronger later, underdog story, etc) but the Obama team didn't expect Romney to go full bulldozer on the first debate and were taken by surprise.

I can see that, though I would still fault Obama for not recognizing who Romney would have to appeal to in that debate. Romney was at a point where his campaign was on the outs and was more in need of a rejuvenated base than an appeal to the middle (which was who Obama was going for). They may have been caught by surprise the by the deluge of bullshiat, but they still should've strategised for that as well as this is Romney we're talking about...

I also think the Media is a convenient scapegoat for those of the Long Game Theory. I wholly agree that the media should've called out Romney's bullshiat much better, but like I said above, Obama taken aback by the idea that Mitt would spew non-stop bullshiat seems like Obama didn't recognise that that's Mitt's MO and Obama did recognise exactly who Mitt needed to appeal to to regain his campaign's footing. if Mitt didn't really beat Obama as much as Obama lost, but Mitt certainly achieved the goal he needed.

Obama had much more to gain from a resounding win (like last night) in the first debate than a drawn out eventual victory. An Obama win in the first debate probably would've put the race mostly to rest and made the next 2 debates largely meaningless. There was too much to lose for Obama with the Long Game Strategy, so I don't believe it was at all planned that way.

My theory is simpler.

A) Obama realized that the first debate would be the first time many viewers (Conservative viewers) would see him unfiltered by Fox News for instance, so he wanted to layout his vision without appearing unpresidential in attacking Romney.

B) He was caught off guard by Romney changing his platform and Romney brought his A-game

C) Obama did not what to destroy Romney until after the VP debate.

What could he have said exactly that would have satisfied you?

Something other than referring to the murdered corpses of his own diplomatic staff as "bumps in the road".

Kind of my thoughts, too. I got to hear a snippet, and I heard anger in his tone, but I didn't hear anything before or after that beyond fake warmth. It's part of why I really find him creepy. He practically screams 'I am faking a warm and caring demeanor', and I have to wonder just why he does it. Normal emotions seem a bit more human.
