machoprogrammer: Poowaddins: G-Rot: shiat, our own Christian fundies are coming close to the Taliban, more close day by day

Stupidest farking thing I've read all week...congratulations dumbass.

Ignoring the inappropriate ad hominem...you obviously don't live in the Bible Belt. The only thing different between Evangelical Christian fundies and the Taliban, is that they don't have major control over the local, state, and federal governments...yet.

Some of the things I've heard around here in Southern Indiana from Evanglical Christians are downright farking scary, and every year there's more and more of them saying it louder and louder.

- They want to kill teh gheys

- They want to murder people who are pro-choice (because we all
- They believe women with educations and jobs outside the home are an abomination (heard from a middle-aged woman at a beauty shop) (Yes, she was asked to leave the premises with shampoo still in her hair)

- They believe alcohol should be prohibited

- They believe people who work on Sundays should be killed

- They don't want the different races to intermarry/breed

So tell me again how they're different in their views?

citation needed.jpg

One isolated nutjob does not make a group. That is like saying Pol Pot and his killing of non-atheists speaks for all atheists.

Come to Indiana and talk with folks. Seriously, this is stuff I overhear at Steak N Shake at 2 am. This shiat he is talking about factored a lot into my deciding to leave the insurance business. I couldn't stand to be around there anymore. I knew kids who were disowned by their parents and shunned by their congregation for deciding to go to college and become nurses or something. I know kids who were sent to a camp out west where they were trained as a paramilitary militia to overthrow the government in the name of Jesus when gay marriage is legalized. It was part of a big homeschooling thing in the area.

When I went back to school, we had half the class walk out the first day in Intro to Archaeology and Human Origins. In Intro to Cultural Anthropology, it took until the religion section of the class but a third of the class decided to walk out and take an F (since they couldn't drop it at that point) rather than listen to someone put other religions on the same level as Christianity. To many people, there IS only one religion, and so freedom of religion only applies to Christianity. The others are "cults" or don't worship the Christian God so by definition they can't be a religion, therefore they have no rights. The Intervarsity Christian Athletes talked that angle up quite a bit.

The number reason why people I have known support libertarianism? So they can pass local laws bringing back segregation and forbidding non-white, non-fundamentalist Christians from even visiting their communities. Now, I know that's not true everywhere, but that has been my experience in southern Indiana.

All of this is supported by certain churches. Go to a mainstream Protestant church and you're probably not going to run into it too much, although my wife was horrified by what was being taught at the United Methodist church in our town (she decided to attend the one in Bloomington instead). The independent churches are the ones where this sort of thing grows. They don't have oversite or accountability built in like most denominations do.

fawlty: Birmingham Police say they questioned two people at a hospital where a teenage Pakistani activist is recovering after being shot

Activist? Really? Can a 14 year old even be an activist? She's a teen who thought and said girls out to be allowed an education. That makes her an activist?

Uh, yeah.

If you have an opinion about how society should change and you express it, that makes you an activist. And if you draw international media attention to your cause by being shot for promoting it, then you are DEFINITELY an activist.

And a damn effective one, at that.

Fizpez: Seems to me a couple of public news announcements stating "Malala has been moved to such and such hospital in this nearly abandoned wing..." along with a few SAS guys, you know, just hanging out at said hospital might solve quite a few problems.

Kind of like sending "You've won SUPERBOWL tickets!" to wanted felons and arresting them when they inevitably show up to pick them up....

Better yet, find an empty hospital and fill it up with nothing BUT special forces dressed up as doctors, nurses, patients, etc.

If they really wanted to kill her, they'd get her on Obama's kill list. They could have her taken out and all of the young male civil...I mean, terrorists along with her.

LOTN: If it's not in a dead sea scroll, it's not worth reading.

I will have to bring that up next time I get into it with a christian fundy.

Leeds: liam76: Leeds: liam76: Man On Pink Corner: liam76: So if I find an athiest in this thread talking about killing extremists does that mean I can make the argument that athiests are becoming more close tot he taliban day by day?

No, because unlike Christians, one atheist can't speak for the rest. There is no Nicene Creed of atheism.

Yeah there is, it is "I don't believe in religion".

You can't use the nutball actiosn of one from a group to paint the rest.

What if what that person did was in the name of the group?

I could go to Ruby Tuesdays and shiat in the salad bar screaming I am doing it in the name of Jesus Christ, but that doesn't mean you can paint christians based on that.

If the actiosn were done by someoen or a group they elect, then yes go right ahead. If the faith ro sect has a head that endorses actions, then yes blame them (looking at you catholics).

But you still cant take the words of a self avowed leader and try and paint people by that.

So according to your example-

When a run of the mill catholic tries to curtail our freedoms, it doesn't mean that religion is oppressive and evil. But when the Pope indicates that he dislikes freedoms, that would paint catholics as evil and repressive.

Does that sum up your hypothesis properly?

I don't recall in the modern day the pope doing anything to indicate he dislikes freedom. And I never said it makes his followers "evil", but you can categorize catholics in general as supporting his stances.

kindms: People always try to make these equivalents. What they never do is this.

US Military might vs. NAME YOUR BAD GUY HERE

So the taliban shot and killed a girl. Our military "accidentally" kills girls just like that everyday in their countries. You might not equate it to "Deny girl right to education" but being dead kind of does that regardless of the intent.

All you folks want to say those folks over there are crazy, they believe in X, Y and Z and they are looney tunes

Well ours might not be as blatantly crazy, but American Exceptionalism is just as much a fundamental belief in this country. It allows our leaders and their followers to look the other way when we do terrible terrible things. The idea that America has the right to wage war on anyone at anytime for any reason is so accepted in this country that it is never discussed.

We run around enforcing our beliefs, our financial systems and culture at the end of a gun barrel. But you are right Americans by sheer will of where they were born are fundamentally righteous and good. It is just everyone in the world who has murderous intent and ill will towards others.

Kurmudgeon: lordjupiter: I have no problem with religious people who don't bother other people.

I do have a problem with religious fanatics who bother other people, and especially those that think only the other guy does it.

While some of us have a problem with every religious person being treated like a fanatic.
Did I bump into you on a public sidewalk, perhaps on an elevator?
Did I speak to you here or in public?
Is that all it takes?

Persecution complex? Who ever said any of that. Use some common sense.

liam76: Koresh, yes a fundie, but he ended up being responsible for killing his own cult.

David Koresh did not fill the building with flammable gas, keep the fire engines away, and shoot anyone trying to leave. The federal government did that.

The cultists might have provided a source of ignition, if they were using kerosene lanterns as speculated.

G-Rot: Barfmaker Hussein was like this, Iraq was stable for years under him. There was a stable economy, colleges and universities, museums, art and every now and then he'd gas the Kurds.

He killed 150,000 Iraqi citizens a year. But we should have left him alone because he kept the lights on?
