Ya, because before Bain... teens just couldn't be lured into smoking. But thanks to the ingenious marketing and devilishly crafty ideas, that got those teens addicted. Masterminds. Everyone of them. And their brilliant plan to increase sales? Cutting costs. Oh My God...they so targeted little Jimmy down the street.

For me it is simply a hypocrisy thing. It seems Mittens has zero scruples and will say anything or do anything if it benefits him. Electing Romney will be Herbert Hoover all over again.

Lol at the "groundbreaking sales strategy". Sales are struggling due to competition from discount makers, they test drive a price cut, sales increase. Wow!!!

So lemme get this straight. Blame Romney for instructing a company how to bring profits up, which happens to be cigarettes. Don't give Romney credit for saving businesses and creating jobs.. This is the only tactic Libs got left to run on? lameness

2012-10-16 11:42:03 AM
He reduced prices, and that produced:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Youth Risk Behavior Survey, found that the portion of young people who had smoked at least one cigarette in the previous month rose nearly 20 percent from 1993 to 1997.

I'm sure no other events could have influenced that, such as the fallout from the disastrous social programs of the Clinton era.

Nice non-inflammatory headline. Huffpro always disguises their bias so well.

2012-10-16 11:42:53 AM
I dislike Romney as much as the next sane person, but it looks like this was simply a matter of adjusting prices to maximize profits, as done by businesses every day. There's no evidence that it was particularly targeted at minors, but that increased smoking by minors might have been an unfortunate side effect. I didn't see in the article any reference to what percentage of sales (before and after) were to minors; that would be important data to have if we're going to pass moral judgement.

2012-10-16 11:43:38 AM
It's pretty simple, really. Most smokers start when they are teens. Teens don't have a lot of disposable income, so price is important. If you cut the price of cigs, they will become a more viable option for novice teen smokers, who then get addicted because tobacco is highly addictive. Since this great move by Bain was nearly 20 years ago, you can bet there are some middle-aged beneficiaries of that plan who are starting to shop for scooters and oxygen bottles as the emphysema sets in. Thanks Mitt--at least it helped pay for your car elevator.

Holy cow there is a lot of liberal derp in here.

They helped a major corporation cut costs and you guys are outraged. It's hilarious that folks can't handle that Romney is a very successful business person.

Wasn't Obama smoking cigarettes and doing coke right about this same time?

2012-10-16 11:46:13 AM
So, lowering prices on cigarettes for adults because of slumping sales due to the product being priced too high, results in an increase in teens smoking as well? I would take this more seriously say if Bain started advertising near schools, or set up an ad campaign specifically targeting kids. But no, it's a product that costs too much having the price lowered and more consumers buying it.

Supply and demand, how does it work?

It's almost as lame as running an entire campaign off of an out of context quote (You didnt build that) and a lie about welfare reform.

Although I have to give them credit, they've now reduced their strategy to just taking both sides of every position.

Funny stuff. The Tea Party loves Paul Ryan, and he was given the veep nod largely to appeal to them, at the cost of moderate votes. It's an act of capitulation on Romney's part.

So he cut prices and therefor cheapskate teens might start buying the cheaper brand? What about that am I supposed to be outraged at?

You know what? It's not your job to manage every aspect of people's lives to make sure they're living healthy. There's a warning label on the pack, if people still want to smoke that's their problem.

/No I don't smoke.

But; if he does get elected; the republicans could throw out the more divicive people. It's a poorly kept secret that a lot of the more colorful members of the tea party are old Birchers.

/ I hate to say it; but, if Obama goes away, so does the tea party's reason for existing.
