Finally, a demographic note-in this poll, 44 percent of respondents were conservative, compared to 16 percent who were liberal.

Well, there could be a statistical outlier that resulted in a high polling of conservatives, or this poll holds terrible news for the Democratic Party and Obama had better not screw up this debate as well, or start saying "President Romney".

That being said, the Iowa Election Markets have seen Romney start to fade a little, having almost reached $0.39, he's back to $0.33. Intrade has Obama with a 61% chance of Charlie Sheen this election.

ThatGuyGreg: If presidents were elected by popular vote, national polls would matter.

They also break down by red/blue/swing states, and that news isn't good either.

Isn't the ratio of people who identify as conservative usually about 2x those who identify as liberal?

KOS points out that in 2008, their poll showed a 34-22 break in favor of conservatives. Even half the difference would move the poll back to Obama's favor.

even more churning: romney will inherit an economy in recovery and poised for boom. without lifting a finger, he'll take full credit for it, of course, and be reelected easily to a second term. and during those 8 years, he will replace at least two liberal SCOTUS judges with rock-ribbed scalia conservatives. that means that citizens united was only the tip of the iceberg. say goodbye to roe, miranda, and a whole lot of settled law.

I seriously doubt there would ever be any kind of ground war in Iran in any situation that resembles the current one. Even if hawk Cheney were elected president. Even an air war with US combat aircraft is a remote possibility. If anyone hits Iran, it will be Israel.

Well, with all the money and voter suppression and activists Republicans in the courts, it's right to worry, but look how much the first poll changed, simply because Romney didn't shoot himself in the foot.

2012-10-16 11:20:44 AM
I have a spreadsheet that takes into account 5 sites and their "ratings" of the states, which generally all give 3 "degrees" of certainty to each side, or "toss up". I add up those then (+3 to -3) to get an overall consensus rating for the states.

The five sites:
* Rassmussen
* 538.com
* 270towin (the "America Votes" poll, using "Last 7 Days" and using the percentage ranges 538.com does for its ratings to determine a "rating")
* Electoral-vote.com
* RealClearPolitics

So, the consensus goes from R+15 to D+15.

If a state is double digits in favor of a candidate, I consider that pretty 'safe' for that candidate.

The "swing states" now (with some comparisons to Oct 2 before the 1st debate):
Michigan D+9 (was D+12 on Oct 2)
Pennsylvania D+8 (D+13)
Wisconsin D+4 (D+8)
Ohio D+2 (D+7)
Nevada D+2 (D+5)
Iowa D+2
NH Even
Virginia R+2 (D+3)
Colorado R+2 (D+3)
Florida R+4 (D+1)
N.C. R+6 (R+3)
Missouri R+8

So, certainly the big "swings" post debate if you believe all the polling pundits are Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Colorado and Florida.

Oh yeah It's worth noting -- as I read from a story I found at electoral-vote dot com, a large number of ballots have already been cast -- approx. 7% of the total, nationwide, and Obama's got 59% of those, Rmoney has... 31% I believe.

And also, just what assistance do you think Israel needs? I wouldn't be surprised if we provided tanking - but that doesn't conflict with what I said. Iran's not really going to shoot down a lot of Israeli jets. We'll also provide diplomatic support and assistance. We might shoot some ballistic missiles down. That's assistance, too. But actually bombing Iran ourselves? That's not assistance. That's doing the whole job.

This is why America sucks. There are people out there who have paid so little attention to politics that they are able to be swayed by a farking debate.

You ask these undecided voters to name all the members of the Kardashian clan and they will be able to, but ask them what state Romney governed or where Biden is from and they will come up empty.

The old saying "we get the leaders we deserve" could become terrifyingly true this November.

Blame the media for pushing the narrative as well then. It went from CAKEWALK to Good Christ where was Obama last night to three straight weeks of "RMONEY STEAMROLLS HIS WAY TO VICTORY as pushed by every major media outlet which drives the narrative for the people who only get their news in brief 10 minute sections on their drive to work or in the evening before the game.

If more people were informed and paid attention, this pants shiatting wouldn't exist because they would know Romney is a duochebag, but the liberals (such as they are) on Fark are not just responding to Obama's shiat performance but also to the response they are seeing from their countrymen nationwide after the media blitz about just how "great" Romney totally was in that debate. I'd shiat my pants too watching Americans flock to this nincompoop who didn't crap the bed for the very first time in his entire six year campaign and got a 12+ point shift in his favor.

First, I'm not a Democrat...so, I don't go into Democratic fatalism mode.

Second, who's thrown his hands up? No one has said Romney is a shoo-in. No one has said the president will be buried in a Republican landslide.

People are just being realistic: the president's debate performance sucked long, hairy Ann Coulter cock. And, yes, his debate performance was so bad that it undermined a lot of what was buoying his candidacy.

I don't see any way around those facts.
