How about this: The entire concept of "fact-checking" instead of "analysis" only exists because American voters are stupid, lazy, uninformed, and don't CARE enough to pay attention to the details and actually educate themselves on the complexity of the issues. They just want to be told "what A said was true; what B said was false" which is in almost all cases impossible because there is usually a grain of truth (no matter how distorted) in what both have said.

So Americans have nobody but themselves to blame that they have forced actual experts in the field to reduce their nuanced analysis and discussion of these issues to "true" and "false". You ask for garbage and you get garbage.

It's Reuters...you didn't think they would dare print anything that would make a Dem look bad did you?

heavymetal: It is also because the press doesn't have the guts to call "bullshiat" when something is total bullshiat out of fear of being called "biased". So the press obfuscates the issues themselves as a way to pander but still appear to be doing their job because it is more about ratings than the truth.

Even if we could come up with a scholarly and factual way to say that one candidate is being more deceptive than another, I think we probably wouldn't just because it would look like we were endorsing the other candidate. - Factcheck.org's Brooks Jackson

My favorite is that Romney refuses to present a concrete budget or tax plan with enough details to even tell if it's true or false. Then, when people try to fill in the blanks in all different ways and say that none of them work, Romney comes back with: "That's not my plan, ha ha!" "Well, this one doesn't work either." "That's not it either, ha ha!" "Well, if you do it this way, it's a huge tax cut for the wealthy and a tax increase for the middle class." "Nope, that still isn't it." "So what the hell is it? Am I getting warmer or colder?" "I'll let you know after the election."

And all the while the fact-checkers don't call Romney's "budget" a "lie," but DO call all the statements about it a lie because Romney keeps saying that's not his plan. I guess you can't "lie" if you don't say anything specific? (Hint: he has presented no real plan, but you might want to look at the actual plan promoted by the Republican leadership in the House and the actual budget penned by the guy Romney picked as his running mate. It will probably look a lot like that -- but Romney doesn't want to tell you that, because you won't like that plan very much if your income is under $5M.)

They are reacting to the environment they live in. the simple fact is that, they profit greatly without much risk or cost from distortions in the truth.
Unfortunately there is very little we can do about this systematic problem because it is based on human nature. Democracy is an attempt to increase the cost of outright lies, but this relies on a free press. Not one that is operationally part of one side of the political spectrum. Sadly, it may also be human nature for the watchdog to become aligned with one side. In the same way a laser resonates and amplifies so do human ideas. In my opinion, the most emotional, least logical, ideas get a higher gain from the humans within an organization and thus resonate more. For an example: Illegal Mexicans Immigrants and Global Warming are "Bad". Neither is entirely true. Nor is either entirely false. But both are very emotional issues, and used as political hand-grenades to solidify a base and attack a political enemy.

It seems to me that there is only one logical solution;
Minimize the power these people have.

Or, hyper-conservativism is just unpopular. Between the giant media conspiracy to lean left, and the latter where people are actively making choices about their preferences - which is more likely?

Answer: there's a reason that people don't like what the GOP has to say. It's because they're wrong. Wrong ideas don't deserve equal time as a test of democracy. The wrong ideas deserve to be expressed, but democracy doesn't mean that people must agree that they're good ideas.

There are good lies and bad lies. Lying about your politics in public office is a good lie. Lying about some people having their hands on their hearts is an evil lie.
