Oh, "waitress moms." Is this the crucial made-up demographic/lazy reporter shorthand for 2012?

Among all registered voters in the survey, Obama leads by nine points among women and by two points overall, 49%-47%.

Um, okay?

Could someone please give me a couple of reasons why a woman would vote for Romney rather than Obama? I understand that religious women often vote against their own interests, and the few super-rich women (or wives of billionaires, etc.) would have cause to vote for Romney as well. But I mean your typical working woman who isn't beholden to religious dogma. Solidly middle-class, maybe with a couple of kids. Maybe married, maybe not. What actual policies has Mitt Romney identified, that will be a part of his administration, that will actually be better for women's lives, economic, physical, sexual, etc.? I'm actually interested, because as a dude looking at the two choices, I can't envision a single reason why Romney's America would be better for American women.

I was wondering why the local GOP shill newspaper columnist (she calls herself an Independent after being a lifelong Democrat, of course) suddenly felt the need to tell us she "stopped at a local diner for lunch and overheard the four waitresses talking about Biden vs. Ryan and how it convinced all four of them to support Romney now."

Clearly the week's talking points have been distributed to the "liberal media"

I am told that every decision you make during a day makes subsequent decisions more difficult. So Romney is taking away some choices for them to make their life easier.

No. They vote for the party. That's it. They vote GOP no matter what. It is obvious and nothing short of Fox News and the GOP flipping sides will really change that. Thankfully demographics are going to encourage said change.

I find it interesting how the ultra religious are voting. Having grown up in a heavily religious part of town and thanks to social media, many of my "friends" are quite fanatical. Any other year they would be calling Mormonism an abomination or a cult (hell, a lot of them think the same with Catholicism). And they wouldn't hesitate to tell you that God comes first in everything including politics. Maybe this conflict is one of the reasons the nutballery has been ramped up to 11.

/Actually I don't find it interesting or even surprising in the slightest...

It's the alpha male vote. This voting block of generally older American women want to be nailed by a real man for the same reason they enjoy reading Fifty Shades of Grey. They watched the debate to see who out-alphas who, and in the last debate Romney acted all alpha monkey by flinging his poo at everyone.

This is mostly why the debate changed voters - impressionable women with unsatisfied sex lives.

Of course just like any Discovery Channel video, the fight isn't over and Obama's sharpening his horns, so expect some changes in the next two debates.

This.

And, as 538 and many other polling analysts have pointed out - simply averaging an aggregate of multiple state polls is bad math, and even worse reporting. It does not work. Period.

"Waitress Moms" are going to get hit hard. They are a bit more likely to be in that 47% that pays no net income taxes, or maybe not much.

1. Romney's tax plan will cut 20% across the board.
2. The only way to cut 20% is to slash deductions.
3. Romney won't tell us what deductions he'll slash.
4. Romney railed against the "47%"
5. The main reason some of the 47% don't pay taxes is deductions- for kids, mortgages, standard deduction, EITC
5. Republicans kept talking about everyone having "some skin in the game."

That's my guess: the big secret plan is to slash those deductions and credits that reduce the tax burden on folks like these so-called waitress moms. They are going to get hit, and hard.

Maybe the fact that she's had to settle for waitressing instead of data entry or lab technician because her unemployment benefits ran out two years ago and they can't afford to stay at home with their kids although her husband also works in a dead end grocery bagging job that he had to settle for after getting laid off from his software development job is the reason they are looking for someone new at the helm.

Nah, numbers are up, right?

So they took a few states where Romney is ahead overall, combined them with states where Obama is ahead overall, and suddenly it's a tie overall? The electoral college doesn't work that way! Romney can win 7 of these states with 100% of the vote, and Obama could win the remaining 5 by only 1% and Obama would still win the election. Combining their numbers is pointless.

This. I have 2 female friends who are voting for Romney, come what may. I can point out every single GOP candidate who want to sidetrack women's choices, curtail women's healthcare, vow to overturn Roe v. Wade, yet hypocritically (and erroneously) accuse Obamacare of "putting a panel of people between you and your doctor", and it falls on deaf ears. What I get back can best be described as ZOMG, SOCIALISM!

They're Republicans and will vote that way, never bothering to learn about the issues or the candidates' platforms. Oddly, they're both at near-poverty levels (one works in a laundromat, the other's a manicurist) and use at least one social program on a regular basis (the one at the laundromat uses Planned Parenthood for her checkups but doesn't see the irony of voting into office the same people who would cut that service).

Oh, this is truly hilarious. After a wave of unprecedented anti-women legislation from the GOP centered on putting Small Government Conservativestm (R) (c) in charge of women's lady parts, the Dems said "hey, ladies, you might want to look at the GOP's effed-up ideas regarding your vajayjay before voting" and apparently it's the Dems who objectify women.

2. Some people, believe it or not, only recently started paying attention to the campaign. If all you had to go on was that debate (and the subsequent reaction to it)...Romney might be looking really good to you right now.

Want to know the biggest homogeneous voting block?

95% of Bush's votes were from white people

caption from TFA:

A new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll of the Swing States shows Mitt Romney with a lead among likely voters as he strengthens his standing with women in the nation's top battlegrounds.

source for TFA:

USA TODAY/Gallup Poll of Swing States taken Oct. 5-11 in Colo., Fla., Iowa, Mich., Nev., N.H., N.M., N.C., Ohio, Pa., Va. and Wis. Margins of error: +/- 4 to 6 percentage points. Nationwide head-to-head matchup based on Gallup daily tracking poll of registered voters Oct. 10-11. Margin of error: +/- 4 points.

Your "new" poll is from the middle of last week before the vice presidential debate. Don't worry, though, it's not like dozens of new ones, including at least half a dozen from the same polling firm, have come out since, right?

/right?!?

So, any reason why an Obama supporter should be shaking in his boots over a 4 day old poll that doesn't break the results up by state and has a margin of error of up to 6 percentage points?

Didn't think so.

brigid_fitch: They're Republicans and will vote that way, never bothering to learn about the issues or the candidates' platforms. Oddly, they're both at near-poverty levels (one works in a laundromat, the other's a manicurist) and use at least one social program on a regular basis (the one at the laundromat uses Planned Parenthood for her checkups but doesn't see the irony of voting into office the same people who would cut that service).

I think about women like that sometimes -how they'd feel and what they'd think if they actually showed up to PP one day and found the doors shuttered and the windows boarded, and found out later that it was their beloved Republicans who passed the bill closing it down. THEN would they wake up and see the Republicans for what they are? THEN would they understand that their enemy wasn't the Democrats all along?

The part of me that wants to have faith in Americans' intelligence tells me yes. But the part of me that isn't an idiot says no.

Can a Fark Statistician explain how these charts are placing the "other/no opinion" part of the chart? Most of the charts with Romney ahead reflect his gains on the bottom of the chart, but the one chart with Obama ahead reflects his gains on the top. In each chart, the "other/no opinion" part of the chart deviates from the 12 o'clock position towards one side or the other, but I don't see an explanation for it.

Not only that, but subby seems to be alluding to the "average" across all the swing states together, which has fark-all to do with who actually wins. What matters is who wins each state.

The only swing state going solidly in Romney's direction right now is North Carolina. Florida is leaning Romney, but still close enough for it to be a toss-up, and VA is dead even. CO, IA, and NV are all leaning Obama, but close enough to be toss-ups. The other 6 swing states are all pretty solid Obama states right now. Personally, I'd rather have the candidate who has 3/4ths of the swing states either leaning toward him or solidly in his corner.

Clearly the week's talking points have been distributed to the "liberal media"

Having just returned home from my 9 hour shift waiting tables, I have serious doubts about the veracity of this columnist. But hey, guess her anecdotal evidence has as much weight as my own, despite my knowing a few (hundred) more people in this business than she does

This is mostly why the debate changed voters - impressionable women with unsatisfied sex lives.

USA Today = news for low information voters with a short attention span. I've seen way too many creative ways of reporting poll numbers this week to put much stock in this. I'm not buying that the debate changed that many minds, nor am I buying the "large number of undecided voters" bullshiat. The media has an interest in making this closer than it is, so they can milk it for all it's worth.

That being said, O better kick some serious ass tomorrow night, and all of y'all who aren't ready to turn the country over to some soulless corporate vampires, better get out and vote! Emposter: the deficit and debt issues that favor Romney

Clearly indicating that the number one problem in the USA is education.

Hint to retard GOP voters: cutting huge amounts of revenue from the budget and massively increasing military spending does not reduce the deficit.

And the GOP's leadership is well-aware of that. Well, the part of it that's actually sufficiently self-aware enough to recognize themselves in a mirror, that is. They don't really care about the deficit--it's a great way to stampede the rubes, but at the end of the day it's not really important to them.

What it DOES do is to get the parasites--to their way of thinking--off the back of government, by starving the system of funds that can be diverted to social programs. See, they regard the fact that you're starving to death or dying of malnutrition because you're too poor to afford decent food on a regular basis, or that you're sick with an illness because you're too broke to afford the insurance to have it treated, as a purely personal problem. It's your problem and no one else's, and certainly not something government has a responsibility to fix, and if the system is completely busted, they have an easy excuse to begin shutting it down entirely. As an added benefit, the money funneled away into defense industries and the military also finds its way into the pockets of some of their biggest supporters, helping to make the people they really represent very, very rich. If the cost of that is a small percentage of the public dying every winter because they can't afford to buy food AND heat their house at the same time, well, that's a sacrifice they're prepared to make.

OK, many polls may end up being dodgy, but are legitimately trying to gather some kind of meaningful data.

A poll that uses a category called "likely voters" is just giving itself a license to make shiat up completely off the top of some random asshole's head. The phrase is specifically designed to mean exactly nothing so that the analyst can interpret it however he wants to get the results he wants, right up to simply pretending that GOP voters are more "likely" flat-out to get some fake numbers with Romney in the lead (or the same with Dems and Obama).

So... no. Not relevant. fark off.

Don't Troll Me Bro!: dahmers love zombie: Could someone please give me a couple of reasons why a woman would vote for Romney rather than Obama?

1) She's stupid
2) Stockholm syndrome

1. She's heard that Obama racked up more debt than any other President, and it saddles her kids with debt, bankrupting the country, etc
2. She thinks abortion is murder. Some version of Romney might try to stop that. Or appoint judges to stop that. Or something
3. Obamacare = government takeover of health care, which would be terrible
4. Socialism! Which sounds suspiciously like communism, or some other bad ism.
5. Regulations strangling job creation
6. Democrats let illegals vote

Every one of these I have heard from IRL conservative friends. Most of these very intelligent people, one with a degree in finance, another with a degree in econ.

The one with a finance degree is a brilliant woman (in most regards), but is utterly convinced that government debt is entirely Obama's fault, and Romney will grow the economy out of it.

dahmers love zombie: Could someone please give me a couple of reasons why a woman would vote for Romney rather than Obama?

A close friend of mine has been out of work for almost two years. She's on welfare for the first time in her life. She and her daughter are both on state insurance (Medicaid?). She's busted her butt trying to find anything - any job at all. She's been trying for almost two years. Nothing.
She's voting for Romney and says she hopes he'll turn the economy around and she can start working again.
There are a lot of solidly middle class women like her out there - who either don't have jobs or are underemployed; or who have unemployed or under-employed spouses or children.
On the surface, a vote for Romney would seem to be against a woman's interests, but for some, their interests start at not losing their homes/lives/marriages. Abortion rights and other women's issues are important, but not as important as not being homeless
I think that Obama has done a pretty poor job of showing people like her why he thinks 4 more years will make a difference.
Anything, even the unknown seems better than the known when you are desperate. The number of underemployed/unemployed/quit looking is high enough to throw this election. If Obama wants to win, he needs to make a case for those people and their votes. Big Bird, equal pay, and abortion are important, but 'jobs' needs to be the first thing out of his mouth every time he opens it.
Romney's vile 47% comment notwithstanding, a lot of people have lost faith in Obama's interest/ability to fix the economy.

She is white, nominally Christian (no church membership, never attends). Her previous job was department manager in a large chain store.

I'm not defending her decision or those like it, only explaining it as it has been explained (by her) to me. Other friends in similar situations have said similar things and also plan to vote for Romney.

None of my Romney-voting friends feel that Obama has explained himself. People are scared and want reassurance, even if it makes no sense and could never work. They want to be told that it'll be okay. It doesn't make sense on some levels, until I remember that she is really scared. There are a lot of people like her.

I won't vote for Romney, but that doesn't mean that I think that Obama has done a good job explaining himself. He can and should do better explaining what he'll do if he gets another term. Obama needs to understand that after so many years of recession, which were not his fault, people are reaching the ends of their economic/emotional/marital/employment ropes.

Desperate people will grab onto anything, regardless of how far-fetched it seems to the rest of us. I can't defend it. I do understand it.

I don't think that many, maybe most people think that way. They don't think of economic policy as being an ongoing, continuing thing. If they did, we would not see Romney getting support for repackaging "trickle-down" economics.

So, yeah, but she's hardly alone in this.

Brian Williams on the Letterman show said his network's stat gurus told him the election comes down to 12 COUNTIES. Not states, counties.

All Romney has to do is keep things appearing to be close. There are 5 people in DC that can do the rest. That's why, I tend to think, the health care decision went the way it did. Give the peons something but in the end, take it away through another more powerful decision in late November.

He's not a businessman in any traditional, legitimate sense of the term; his political allies are theocratic loons who'll use their own religion to rationalize trampling on people's lives; and nothing in his life story says "American experience" (with apologies to PBS). How is the cool black guy not whippin' his butt?

Cuz dat cool black guy has destroyed the lives and livelihoods of tens of millions of Americans, dat's why. People on welfare bragging about their free phones, free housing, free money...the average hardworking person who hasn't been able to afford a vacation because they have lost their jobs in the energy sector are tired of seeing the money stolen from them by the government handed to people who are proud to be leeches.

spelletrader: If they think there are 12 "swing states" they're smoking crack.

I was watching Morning Joe at the gym this morning (it's either that or Fox and Friends or my choice of early morning infomercials) and Mark Halperin was show his electoral map for Romney based on what "he's heard" from "prominent democrats". It had Florida, Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina all going for Romney and Romney in the Electoral lead... Of course, he mentions that he's not giving these states to Romney, but you know...what if?

The media so desperately wants this to be a horse race so we all tune in and watch the coverage and, particularly, tonight's debate. Once again proving the only real bias in the media is towards whatever will increase ad revenues.

Lionel Mandrake: I_C_Weener: Maybe some of them are upset at one side tweeting stuff like "vote like your lady parts depend on it" reducing women to vaginas instead of people. Or maybe, just maybe no group is as homogeneous as pols and polls think. Aside from the Aftican American voting block that is.

The homophobe block is pretty predictable

So is the racist block.

Honestly that's probably the nuts and bolts of this. That woman yelling outside the debate that Obama's a "communist" doesn't have any intention of analyzing how her vote will affect her life as a woman.

SharkInfested: Mr. Coffee Nerves: I was wondering why the local GOP shill newspaper columnist (she calls herself an Independent after being a lifelong Democrat, of course) suddenly felt the need to tell us she "stopped at a local diner for lunch and overheard the four waitresses talking about Biden vs. Ryan and how it convinced all four of them to support Romney now."

Clearly the week's talking points have been distributed to the "liberal media"

Having just returned home from my 9 hour shift waiting tables, I have serious doubts about the veracity of this columnist. But hey, guess her anecdotal evidence has as much weight as my own, despite my knowing a few (hundred) more people in this business than she does

I spent YEARS in the business. Just when I thought I was finally done, I ended up moonlighting as a bartender again, a shift or two per week. It's quick cash. I also get laid from time to time.

I have nothing to offer the thread other than to extend my courtesy to you. Waiting tables sucks balls, but everyone has to have a gig, right? Keep fighting the good fight.

Lsherm: [img708.imageshack.us image 695x382]

Can a Fark Statistician explain how these charts are placing the "other/no opinion" part of the chart? Most of the charts with Romney ahead reflect his gains on the bottom of the chart, but the one chart with Obama ahead reflects his gains on the top. In each chart, the "other/no opinion" part of the chart deviates from the 12 o'clock position towards one side or the other, but I don't see an explanation for it.

You're kidding, right?

jjorsett: dahmers love zombie: Could someone please give me a couple of reasons why a woman would vote for Romney rather than Obama?

Maybe because they and/or their children have suffered thru four years of the Obama "recovery" and want to give somebody else a try now so that they can have a job and a future? All the other issues go only so far when you have no money.

That cannot be. Wymon are more interested in reproductive freedom and free contraception than mundane things like "food on the table " and "steady good paying job" those things are SOOO bourgeois.....

Yes Democrats *despise* working class people. That's why they support minimum wage.

What rightwingers actually believe.

Nadie_AZ: themindiswatching: dahmers love zombie: Could someone please give me a couple of reasons why a woman would vote for Romney rather than Obama?

Because there is a certain group of people who think unconsciously that Rmoney is a "real man" or something.

No. They vote for the party. That's it. They vote GOP no matter what. It is obvious and nothing short of Fox News and the GOP flipping sides will really change that. Thankfully demographics are going to encourage said change.

For some people, this is the only lesson they learned in school - support your team against all others. Politics is just another us versus them event, and you support your team even if they do want to stick wands up your vagina and in through your uterus.

ManateeGag: there are 12 swing states? that's a little less than a quarter of the country.

We really need to dump the electoral college. Of course, the flip side of that is it would make campaigning even more expensive.

Restaurants will be only using part-time workers to avoid paying for Obamacare, so workers are realizing that having a full-time job is more important than free birth-control pills ($9.00 at Walmart).

jojostan: free contraception

Nobody wants free contraception, they just want the money they are already paying for health insurance to cover something very basic and necessary without any interference by the God Squad.

Also, those Obama phones aint free.

Hell, even freedom isn't free.

Then they are stupid to believe that 8 years of wrecking the economy, bringing the world to the brink of financial collapse, and fighting 2 wars on a credit card while slashing taxes can be fixed in 3.5 years.

And they deserve to be mocked and laughed at. They who vote for Romney who will return to the aforementioned policies and expect things to be better for them have no sympathy from me.

And they obviously are ...well....pretty farking stupid.

Sure. They care about employment and the economy.

The 0bama economy really hurt that demographic as they lost jobs at a disproportionate rate.

As an American woman whose household income has nearly doubled over the past four years, you're full of shiat.

Thanks, and right back atcha! Was out of it for years, but circumstances somehow resulted with me back in the business. I do make enough money with this gig to not have to pick up every shift and have time to work on other projects, writing, etc

And one gets spoiled working in restaurants in DC. Never worked with anyone who didn't have a college degree, most have at least a masters, and just enjoy the life or enjoy the independence it allows them to persue their own thing. The afterhours discussions would go over the heads of 90% of the customers
