Uhh, not everyone in The Lord of the Rings was white. Not even all of the protagonists. It was stated pretty openly that the Dunlendings and other southern descendants of the Numenorans were dark-skinned and not evil. That makes most everyone in Bree "not white."

Plus, you know, they had different races, such as dwarves and elves, and they had their own problems with racism. Which was addressed in one of the more moving friendships in literature between Gimli and Legolas.

But considering that the story was playing off of British folklore, it's not really a surprise that most folks end up seeming white and British.

And don't get me started on how the scariest villain in the series is defeated by a woman who openly defied her gender roles.

I think the scene where he's in bed with another dude is supposed to confirm it. The guy wants to cuddle. Dafoe ironically calls him a "fag". Pretty obvious (IMO).

I'm getting kinda tired of people attacking films, books, and what-not based off of fantasy, which is generally based off of European Mythology. There aren't that many black people involved in Nordic myth, which is where Tolkien drew a heavy amount of inspiration.

Part of the whole deal with the Lord of the Rings was that there were several different races working together. When they tried to do things on their own they failed. Elf/dwarf/hobbit doesn't directly translate to black/white/asian but the theme is the same. That makes it even more hilarious when white supremecists hold up the test as "white pride"

Posted here because it is awesome, Tolkien's response to German publisher asking if he was aryan:

"Thank you for your letter... I regret that I am not clear as to what you intend by arisch. I am not of Aryan extraction: that is Indo-Iranian; as far as I am aware noone (sic) of my ancestors spoke Hindustani, Persian, Gypsy, or any related dialects. But if I am to understand that you are enquiring whether I am of Jewish origin, I can only reply that I regret that I appear to have no ancestors of that gifted people."

The highly educated responding to the pseudo-scientific. Magnificent.

No shiat. Have you actually listened to two women talk for more than five minutes?

I completely and utterly forgot that that character was gay.

Martin Silenus: No shiat. Have you actually listened to two women talk for more than five minutes?

I tried thinking of just scenes where professional women in professional settings would have work related conversations and I couldn't think of any examples other than The Devil Wears Prada. Much like the token black guy, most movie/tv law firms have just one token woman as well and the few that have more than one usually talk about dating when they're sharing screen time.

Until reality changes, movies about things modeled off of reality (not necessarily just history films) will be how they are.

If you made a movie about the Battle of the Bulge and cast every character as a woman, or even any of the main officers, you would get laughed at. It's not because it's farking sexist.

The same thing with gangster movies (for the most part), westerns, or any other movie in which the main theme/activity is in reality a thing that ONLY MEN DO.

i.e. it's not because the movies are sexist but because history / reality is "sexist".

In fact, far more sexist are the romantic comedies which are supposed to be ABOUT women and are about vapid coonts instead.

The problem is standard genre "fantasy" is based upon medieval europe in tech level, mythology, social hierarchy and culture. Unfortunately that makes most protagonists white, even when the ostensible "setting" is a different universe with its own continents.

You can blame Tolkien and the rest of fantasy authors from Britain for writing popular fantasy fiction and setting the mold for the rest. (Interesting note, the Japanese and Chinese each have a subculture that is in love with their own feudal/imperial past, replete with its own mythology and culture. Those never really caught on as a default setting of "magical land" though)

Of course this trend could be absolutely bucked, if someone wanted to make a genre fantasy book that was anchored with a non-white culture and liberally blended many more. I think such a thing would be a refreshing take on a genre that gets stale quickly (GoT is a cut above because it tries to avoid the most nonsensical parts of genre fantasy)

I think most of the cries of racism against fantasy, and the defenders against them are missing more of the point of the discrepancy. Genre fantasy is still only really popular with nerdy, upper-middle class people. Now the cause of that is anybody's guess but I think it falls into the same category of camping: a lionization of "simpler times."

And as someone pointed earlier: marketing and laziness perpetuates all these fantasy characters being white.

This sponsor reminds me of SNL.

The writer obviously felt a clever twinge from a singular concept. "Why do women always only talk about men in movies," would work but to ham-fistedly evolve this to an article or skit (let alone a movie) stresses the concept. That's why Twitter blew up so easily, simplicity in compactness. The article is clumsy.

It's even weirder when you learn that Tolkien hated the Nazis for distorting the Norse mythology he loved. Lord of the Rings is pretty much the opposite of racist.
