"I thought Paul Ryan was respectful and knowledgeable. He was head and shoulders above the other man," said Nancy Runion, a 58-year-old office manager from Findlay, Ohio, who will go bankrupt paying for her own healthcare when Paul Ryan replaces Medicare with a voucher system. "Biden was very disrespectful. But Paul Ryan showed a lot of character."

Who knew that acting like an adult and not like a petulant child makes one seem more Vice-Presidential among the elderly?

When asked about the 1st presidential debate, Runion added, "Mitt Romney seemed more like a president to me because he was quick and decisive with his answers, and very sure of himself. President Obama reminded me of that kid who keeps playing basketball in his driveway all night...the constant thumping of his radio keeps me awake at night."

That doesn't hold true for Presidental debates, apparently.

I think they're just reminiscing about watching Butch Patrick in their younger days, and are imprinting that into their view of Ryan.

Elderly Republican women who attend republican rallies think Ryan did better in a debate. Groundbreaking article.

Ryan has early onset old man face.

No doubt in my mind that it just comes down to race.

Obama can either be seen as lazy and shiftless during the debate, or angry black guy. There are no other options for a large portion of older voters. He is either lazy or angry, but above all is black. Mitt Romney doesn't even have to say anything, he just has to be white and stand next to Obama and these closet racists will assume Romney wins. It's doesn't matter that everything that came out of Romney's mouth was a lie or direct contradiction with an earlier campaign statement, he's white. Romney can be as rude as he wants to be, and it is perceived as putting that uppity ni*bong* back in his place.

Better yet:

"I thought Paul Ryan came out looking very responsible and intelligent, and personally I did not think the vice president did," said Susan Seifert, a 65-year-old retired housewife who lives on a farm in rural Ohio and brought her 16-year-old granddaughter here to see Ryan and Romney the day after the debate. Given the way he acted, she said -- "all that smirking and grinning" -- Biden "doesn't seem to be taking the country very seriously."

Several older women I met at the rally put it in similar terms: Ryan, 42, struck them as a nice young man, Biden, 69, a grating boor. Some Republicans might have wished Ryan pushed back harder against Biden's aggressive assault, but these ladies appreciate that he minded his manners.

I'd still prefer Obama to show up tomorrow night as Angry Black Man. If his mannerisms are going to be over-analyzed anyway, he needs to at least use the opportunity to call Romney out on his BS this time. Since the final debate is all foreign policy, this debate will be his last chance to correct Romney on domestic issues that a lot of voters pay attention to (like medical care, social security, and taxes).

"There was one person on the stage with thoughtfulness, who was respectful, who was steady and poised," Romney said of the vice-presidential debate. "There was one person on that stage who you'd want to be with in a crisis, and it's this man right here."

If the GOP wins, you and the rest of the country will probably be in a crisis with Ryan. So, there's that to look forward to.

I thought Ryan's presence on the ticket was supposed to help the Republican gender-gap problem. To go from women hating Repulicans more than men do, Ryan as a sex symbol was supposed to sexually attract female fans. Any evidence for that strategy? The article only talks about dried up old GOP grandmas who probably haven't had a tingle down there for decades.

I'm pretty sure Obama is going to win BUT I am concerned about the "racism vote".

I thought it was just old people but apparently "Yo, I ain't racist, but the white house is the white house for a reason" is a meme on twitter.

I'm not sure it's the blatant racism from my generation that upsets me, or the double-think cognitive dissonance that pisses me off the most.

What do you think the NDAA did that wasn't already covered by the 9/11 AUMF?

That is so insulting and doesn't work on any of the women I know. But apparently little old ladies fall for it. Wasn't that the Dan Quayle strategy? Will put this bland Ken-doll on the ticket and women will swoon!

hey guys, here's a little secret about women: men get more or less attractive as you get to know them. Ryan is such a twit, it's impossible for me to see him as attractive. If he had an entirely different personality and different set of beliefs, he could be cute.

There are plenty of ignorant rednecks, but it's a slightly different thing than having grown up before or during the Civil Rights movement. I want to say the rednecks hate Obama because he's black. The older folks like Romney because he's white. They might not hate Obama for being black, but they still have a certain damning perception of him.
