People really, really, really misinterpret the meanings of pop songs to a surprising degree.

My choice. Just because it's beautiful and it'll make people seriously cry. Oh, followed up by Iz's Beautiful World/Over the Rainbow. Because I'm a right bastard.

/then I want my ashes stuffed into a cannon to the strains of a piper playing Amazing Grace, and shot towards an effigy of Honey Boo Boo standing hand-in-hand with Bat Boy, to Yackety Sax.

Everyone knows the best song to play at a funeral is Timothy, by the Buoys.

Of course people play music at their funerals. The pole dancers would look pretty stupid gyrating around in silence!

Just an aside, I really liked Adele's theme song for the upcoming 'Skyfall' 007 film. Got a real Shirley Bassey tone going on that.

:-D Yep.

(Although I admit I was a fan of Bill Haley even before that, that just cemented it for me.)

Aarontology: People really, really, really misinterpret the meanings of pop songs to a surprising degree.

I did a project for a friend of the family's 50th birthday where her family gave me lots of photos and I scanned them into a video presentation. Mom narrated and I overlaid some background music. One section was all about her and her husband's world travels. So I was looking for music appropriate to that theme.

Mom was getting impatient because I kept rejecting all her suggestions. "Travel" songs are terrible! About half of them are really about cheating and infidelity when you listen to them. "Leaving on a Jet Plane." "The Wanderer." I ended up going with "Fly Like An Eagle." But yeah, the whole thing made me think "people don't really listen to or understand lyrics, do they?"

Their daughter is worse. She listens to lyrics but fails to understand metaphors.

I'd like this one to play. Because really, it emphasizes my sense of humor.

I'd go more with "I Fall To Pieces" by Patsy Cline.

Staying Alive - Bee Gees
Knock on wood - Amii Stewart
Take My Breath Away - Berlin

Completely ignoring the true meaning of the lyrics, I'd go with "Down in a Hole" by Alice in Chains.

Don't play pop songs at funerals, people. It's tacky beyond belief.

Now, if the deceased *requested* a song, then yeah, you kind of have to play it. But otherwise...skip it.
