Oops, pardon my typos. I pecked all of this out on my touch screen phone. :)

The other thing that will be interesting to see as time goes on will be how the permanence of the internet will affect these kids abilities to get into certain colleges and or specific career fields. Bullying, posting false roomers, racist shiat...all coming back to bite them in the ass when they are trying to get into Grad School, or want to get a clearance, or run for public office.

Kejlina: Someday these teens will grow up, and some of them might have a realization that in the grand scheme of things, a boob photo is actually no big deal. They'll realise that and then get a terrible sinking feeling in their guts over tormenting someone to death over something that's no big deal. I hope the guilt torments them until they realise that they can't change what happened but they can change what happens next and start treating people with respect accordingly.

Never gonna happen. But I like your view of Utopia.

Fark Rye For Many Whores: fisker: Defend Facebook

You're imagining things - if I'm defending anyone (not really) it's the kids whose behavior isn't surprising. I don't use FB and I've had this kind of thing happen to me anyway even dealing with the "grownup" crowd.

um

just for clarity the girl who recently committed suicide was physically assaulted as well as verbally and cberbullied, it was not just a facebook page saying so and so slept with him/her. Very sad.

i hate facebook, i have a 15 and 17 year old and now i have to monitor their facebook shenanigans.

/was delighted to be done with high school back in the day.. assholes all over the place

entropic_existence: This sort of thing is a very real problem. Yes bullying has been around forever, but there is literally no escape now for lots of teenagers and kids. When people posting shiat on facebook about other students leads to brawls, beatings, and eventual suicide... there's a problem.

And sometimes those bullies and trolls keep shiat up even after the person dies.

Look, I got the crap beat out of me more than a few times going through high school... I empathize with these kids... but a good part of dealing with bullying is good parenting. Bullies get their rocks off by you being upset by them, creating a spectacle for all to see in which they win. Once you stop caring one way or the other what they say, whether you get in a fight that day, or whatever, they'll find something else to do. We need parents to parent a little better, because dealing with bullies is not something that ends in high school... even out in the working world, there are managers and coworkers who will bully you, maybe not physically, but they'll do everything they can to make your life hell just to prove they can... if you don't have good coping mechanisms, it just isn't going to work out.

With respect to suicide prevention and intervention, we need to be realistic about the possibility that kids will kill themselves. Too often the response from friends and family is that they knew the person was being bullied or harassed, but they just didn't think it was that bad, or they just didn't think their kid would be the one to kill him/herself. It's imperative that no matter what goes on in the whole rest of the world, that kids have at least one person they can unequivocally trust and confide in, so even when they're really down, they aren't alone in it.

I hate Facebook too, but it does help keeping up with your 15 and 17 year old much easier for me.

Is there no way Facebook can monetize this by telling corporations that their future potential employees are sluts?

Zombie DJ: Hoboclown: cgraves67: If only Facebook weren't mandatory and you could opt out of it, or not even join in the first place. If only.

Exactly! If they didn't have a Facebook account, nobody on Facebook could talk about them!

You obviously don't have kids and of you think that's a smart statement, you may want to avoid HAVING kids.

I can't tell if you didn't get my sarcasm or if I'm not getting yours.

I'm glad I'm not a kid today. Back in my day, when kids said and did stupid stuff there was no record and generally most stupid shiat was forgotten the next day. Kids these days do something stupid and it will potentially stay with them for the rest of their lives thanks to the magic of the internet and search engines.

So really, yeah I'm glad I'm not a kid today.

I see it as an effective way of telling apart the kids who were raised properly from the kids who weren't.

The thing about teens is that they don't think like normal people. Their brains are still forming, synapses are making connections and they're experiencing far more complex emotions than they have ever known. Their brains are surging with powerful chemicals. Of course they're not going to know how to deal with it or get a sense of perspective. You get a pack of them together and it's Lord of the Flies without the tropical setting. I watched Amanda Todd's video and I wish I could have told her something to make her feel better. She was just a kid.
