I like Seth MacFarlane's brand of comedy because you don't know what's coming next. My favorite part is when you think one thing is going to happen, and then something else does. Hilarious.

It's so weird how these things happen. Luck has to be involved. The movie was funny, but there have been many equally funny movies that never were that big of a hit.

Plenty of luck. I mean, it could be as simple as the weather. If the weather was nice at all the openings maybe more or less people saw it, which led to less hype, which led to less people seeing it just because of the hype.

CSB: wife and i saw it i think on the third day of release. she thought, for some reason, adam carolla was the lead voice guy or whatever.

now, months before, perhaps, i don;t know, march, april, may, whatever, Carolla on his podcast was like, "yeah, seth asked me to come over, i saw a rough cut, i laughed my ass off, the movie will either make a hundred million dollars or disappear in 1 week, that's how i think it will go..."

so i tell my wife, "bler bler ler, adam carolla is not one of the voices, he just knows seth mcfarlane..."

the next mornign i'm at the airport and run into Adam farking Carolla. Chat a bit, get a picture, he's totally cool. tell my wife later, "how weird is it that one day i';m talking about adam carolla, then 24 hours later i'm meeting him?"

This. As long as they keep raising ticket prices, I could give a shiat about who made the most money or whatever "record" is broken this week. Tell me who sold the most tickets. That is assuming I care at all. Which isn't likely.

Yeah, to think they won't have to set through crappy 80s montages. The horror. Besides, those movies were terrible anyway. They need to set through wholesome, family movies. Like Gigli.

Highest grossing is meaningless.

There's exponentially more people and the dollar's worth much less than in years gone by. Show me the numbers adjusted for inflation and reduced to per capita.

Nope, sorry, wrong.

Why?

Were there major special effects in the films when they were in theaters that couldn't be reproduced for home video?

Theaters are way overrated, especially these days.

I don't doubt it. Gone with the wind was many things, but it certainly isn't as good as the reputation it's garnered.

Jaws on the other hand, worth every breath of praise and every drop of ink to promote it.

Definitely. Just don't be one of the suckers that buys it when it's first released to disc. It's great, but it's audience is limited... bargain $5 bin within 6 months.

I got NL Christmas Vacation a few years ago at Best Buy (or was it Target?) for $2.99 on DVD. Never underestimate the power of stupid people to completely miss the value of something.

Virtually every movie gets that cheap eventually. My local Big Lots has 12 Angry Men, The Graduate, and plenty of other legitimately good movies in their $3 and $5 bins, and I just got Young Frankenstein from Target for $4.50. They aren't that cheap because of (lack of) quality.

Christmas Vacation has been out on home video for 22 years. Nearly everyone who wants to own it already has a copy. Plus, most folks only watch it in December, and at that time, it's on at least one HBO or Encore channel every day.

It's just reduced demand. It says nothing about the quality of the movie.

Hell, last year, I picked up Trading Places and Coming to America for 5 bucks each. Doesn't mean they're not still classics.

I want 12 Angry Men for $3. Every time I try to find it elsewhere it simply goes down to "expensive or otherwise something stupid happens and I can't buy it".

Yep.

Eventually, all DVD releases that have been out for a while get dumped back onto the market at insanely low prices because it's better for the companies to make a little money on them than to pay to store them.

Quality has nothing to do with price.

It does. Technically, Home Alone is still the top grossing comedy.

However, if you go strictly by tickets sold, movies like Back to the Future and Beverly Hills Cop blow them all out of the water.

Didn't see it. Don't want to see it. this is probably due to me not being a 16 year old boy.
