Teaching "The Metamorphosis" right now, so really getting a kick out of this story.

I recently read a lawyer write about kafka. literature people have routinely avoided or ignored the legal thought present in kafka... but, as this lawyer said, kafka was a pretty good lawyer back in his day, and there was a real awareness about legal theory in his works.

i didn't read the whole thing and it's been a while since I read kafka, but I enjoy when someone finally points out the obvious that critics ignored as metaphor.

Like other existential writers, Kafkas is sometimes too famous (in the US, at least) for his surface angst about existence - which is most of what the Metamorphosis is about, IIRC - and his weirdness, than his angsty examination of our relationships with people and institutions. I've heard of him being listed in Law in Literature syllabi and have always been glad.

I didn't search long for the article. I'm sure you could find it free on google scholar. (I have been able to find a lot of articles that otherwise required membership on google scholar for free).

I think of it this way, critics tend to only examine what concerns them.  there aren't too many lawyers who are well studied in czech law before WWII. and, there are probably even less who have an interest in literature.
