The weekend is normally the slowest in news exposure, yet we raised almost a quarter of our goal. Along with our precision Twitter bombing campaign, this should be an interesting day.

2012-10-14 08:42:43 PM
As an update:

We have reached over 20% of our goal in just three days. Over 444 people have funded the project and we've had over 44,000 visitors to the donation page that totals over 79,000 page views!

GreatGlavinsGhost should be by shortly to post his correlated data and links (thanks again for doing that!). On Sunday we attempted a targeted twitter campaign. This was actually a pretty large success as I saw the incoming visitor and page view stats almost double today alone. I'm sure this was a result of the social media campaign a lot of you have been waging, as well as some print media attention, so thanks to everyone for sharing this project! There were several very dedicated tweeters who spent the day spreading the donation site to a bunch of people. I'm not sure what their fark names are but I am very grateful to you guys for doing this!

For the next couple of days I would like to concentrate on local media. This doesn't necessarily have to be "small" media, but try to limit it to your own locale, or those of nearby areas. Please try to tweet local news agencies, as well as post on their facebook pages. Try to concentrate on the "offbeat" news sections or the politic writers. If anyone has any news connections, no matter how tenuous, please consider forwarding this story to them.

To be honest, we have already reached a milestone in that this campaign is serious, real and will be helping people. Even if we don't make another dollar, we will still be able to send $1,500 to each of our charities. That is something to be very, very proud of.

We have 44 days left to get our lulz and help some people. Let's keep it up. And by keeping it up, I do not mean spending your entire day working on this. I don't want anyone to get fatigued and stop moving the project forward after day 5 or 10. This is a marathon, not a sprint. We got this. :)

TL:DR - YOU ARE ALL AWESOME. Keep up the social media bombardment and let's get the attention of local and regional news companies and personalities.

I read the whole Car and Driver interview and his story about peeling out in his brother's Caddy down his driveway cracked me the fark up.

Joe, every time you rolled your eyes, I was rolling mine too. You were one of the poorest congresscritters, a sign you at least had your wallet in the the right place. You called Alberto Gonzales "The Real Deal" when you confirmed him, but I'm willing to look past it all considering you've got a '67 ragtop Vette you admit to washing and Simonizing in your bathing suit.

If Joe isn't "Frank the Tank" minus the drunken naked running down the street (which I'm not willing to say hasn't happened) I don't know who is.

2012-10-14 09:02:49 PM
Oh and I'm in for $50. Fark it man, I'm still cracking up over all this.

One note from my own perspective on this:

I don't really look at this as a Democrat thing or a Republican thing or a political thing, I consider this an Internet thing. The same as when Fark helped send a crowbar and a Half-Life strategy manual to the scientist at the LHC that looked like Gordon Freeman in one of the publicity photos.

A lot of people are saying, "Hey, he can afford to buy his own car!" Of course he can. This isn't about helping Joe because he can't afford a car, it's about making a silly Internet meme become reality, and also to help some charities. If you really want to discuss politics, I'd ask that you go over to the politics tab; there are a lot of current stories there that you can discuss. This one is about having fun and doing something neat. If you don't want to join in, you don't have to--that's your choice. I'd just ask that you find a different thread that's more to your liking.

To all of you Farkers that have helped in any way, whether it was contributing with money, or time, or organizing any of this, or helping share the word on your Facebook wall or tweeting it--YOU FREAKING ROCK. Thank you for what you've done, and hopefully what you'll continue to do. This is awesome and everybody who has had a hand in helping to set this up or keep the momentum going is fantastic. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

So I've been a-tweeting, but for some reason I don't think Twitter indexes any of my tweets with the donation page's URL. From what I can find online, it's possible that people with few followers and/or linking to not-well-known sites don't get indexed for search? I tweeted "Sunday night football and rain...mmm...#givejoethebird" and it shows up in search, but none of my @MoveOn, @TheEllenShow, @whoever with the URL included show up. I guess the recipient sees the tweet, maybe, just not anyone else?

Would you mind reposting the detailed information from the weekend thread as to why we're doing what we're doing? Quite simply there are going to be those who are unwilling to go to one of the other threads to get all the facts. Plus it might cut down on the trolls & naysayers to a certain extent.

The Twitter campaign went pretty well. I followed it and we had multiple tweets going to each celeb/media figure. I had to take a break to go eat dinner but the volume wasn't terribly high at that point. The thing is, that's OK- if it's not a metric farkton of people, it just looks spammy and annoying, and therefore easy to ignore. In this case I think we probably hit about the right level of volume- enough to be noticeable without going into the automatically ignored bucket.

Tomorrow will tell. I'm going to notify a few of the radio DJs in Seattle about it, they may take it up.

If you're using the Twitter interface, select "All" and not just "Popular" or whatever it is at the top. That removes the silly filtering Twitter does.

Keep up the social media bombardment and let's get the attention of local and regional news compan ...

Would you mind reposting the detailed information from the weekend thread as to why we're doing what we're doing? Quite simply there are going to be those who are unwilling to go to one of the other threads to get all the facts. Plus it might cut down on the trolls & naysayers to a certain extent.

Im actually on my phone for the rest of the night but that is a great idea. Feel free to post the info in my stead. :) if not, Ill put it up tomorrow.

I sent this, slightly modified, to the morning and afternoon drive-time hosts on KIRO Radio in Seattle. I think there's a really good chance one or both of them will pick it up.

Hi Ron and Don (and Rachael!),

I hope you're having a good day so far!

This is the same email I sent to the Ross and Burbank show, but I thought you might enjoy it also. Or maybe it'll Ring Rachael's bell. :)

I wanted to let you know about thing some friends of mine and I are up to: Holding a fundraising drive to buy Vice-President Joe Biden a Trans Am! in reality it's for charity, but we're utterly serious about this.

If you read The Onion, you're probably familiar with the article from a couple of years ago satirizing VP Biden as washing a vintage Trans Am on the White House lawn (http://www.theonion.com/articles/shirtless-biden-washes-trans-am-in-w hite-house-dri,2718/). Since it was published, it's become one of the more prominent political memes on the Internet- the idea of Joe Biden as an Icehouse-chugging everyman who wears jorts and washes a muscle car on the White House lawn.

So, how this got started: On Friday morning a Farker named "Hack Patooey" (yes, that's his handle. We tend to be pretty irreverent over there) posted a thread in the wake of the debates saying that it would be fun to buy Joe Biden a Trans Am.

It took off instantly, and within only a few hours we had decided to make it a charity drive with the car as the hook, set up a campaign on IndieGoGo (http://indiegogo.com/BidensTransAm), got a web site (givejoethebird.com), established what we were going to do, set fundraising targets and had raised over a thousand dollars. At the time I write this, it's over $6000.00, which is more than 25% of the way to our target of $25,000.

The goal is simple- to buy a sweet vintage Trans Am for Joe Biden, try to get a photo op with the VP and then auction it for charity. We knew from the outset that there wasn't really any chance the VP would want or accept a car, no matter the cause. However, we figure it's a fun way to make a meme real and benefit some GREAT causes.

The charities we chose are:

* Doctors Without Borders
* GLAAD
* The Wounded Warrior Project
* The Biden Breast Health Initiative

If we don't make our goal we'll divide the donations received evenly between the charities. If we do make it, the Trans Am will be auctioned and the proceeds divided evenly- and anything over and above the target goal will also be divided up evenly.

We've spent the weekend Tweeting, Facebooking and flacking this thing everywhere and we think it's got legs. We'd love to have you cover it on your show! I listen to you guys most mornings and really enjoy it, so regardless of whether you find this interesting I thank you for the great work you do!

Have a great day!

Bathia_Mapes: Cyclometh: The Twitter campaign went pretty well.

If possible, can you add Samuel L Jackson and Neil Patrick Harris to the list for future tweets?

Excellent idea- RichieLaw, you're the keeper of the Tweet gunsights, right?

Cyclometh: Krymson Tyde: Dallymo: So I've been a-tweeting, but for some reason I don't think Twitter indexes any of my tweets with the donation page's URL.

I noticed the same thing with mine. I search #givejoethebird and I see a lot, but not mine. They were showing up earlier before I added the link. Just tried again w/o the link and it shows up in the search.

If you're using the Twitter interface, select "All" and not just "Popular" or whatever it is at the top. That removes the silly filtering Twitter does.

Unfortunately it's not that--the tweets with the URL don't show up on Twitterfall for #givejoethebird, either.

The stock response appears to be "Twitter's search is optimized to serve relevant tweets to end-users in response to direct, non-recurring queries such as #hashtags, URLs, domains, and keywords. The Search API (which also powers Twitter's search widget) is an interface to this search engine. Our search service is not meant to be an exhaustive archive of public tweets and not all tweets are indexed or returned. Some results are refined to better combat spam and increase relevance."

I think that users (like me) with few followers and not a lot of prior activity are suspect for spam with a sudden spate of linky tweets. Ssssss.

This has actually been passed on to sarahdiddle I am just too busy and she was awesome on her twitter today. Please direct all twitter strategy inquiries and questions to her.

Good evening all, my name is Sarahdiddle and I will be taking over our tweeting efforts! I do not yet have a schedule (I have emailed RichieLaw and I wanted to make sure we are on the same page first).

My idea is that we have a targeted twitterbomb like we did today but also tweet to our regional/local papers and stations. Obviously I cannot compile a list of those twitter feeds so I feel our best bet is to tweet to those in addition to our targets and to check the #givejoethebird hashtage and retweet the regional/local ones we see throughout the day.

The best bet we have is to constantly retweet each other and to also include the trending topics the best we can in our tweets as well. Please make sure that you include the #givejoethebird hashtag and the website(either givejoethebird.com or the indiegogo site) in every tweet you post. Also for the least annoying (to yourself) twitterbombing you can do, use HootSuite. It is completely free and you can schedule your tweets in advance. It took me 10-15 minutes today to schedule ALL my tweets for the twitter bombing (60+). I've included a brief tutorial in this post. I post the schedule after RichieLaw gets back to me!

Brief HootSuite tutorial:

After you sign up for an account, please allow access to your twitter account (or accounts, you can sign in for more than one). On the left side of the window, there should be a tool bar with various icons. Click on the paper airplane (Publisher). Another tool bar should be to the right of that. Make sure scheduled is highlighted in blue (schedule in bulk requires a paid account). At the top of the window you should see a box with "compose message" in it. Make sure you write your full tweet (include who you are mentioning/sending it to) in this box. Do not send it yet. Then click the icon that looks like a calendar (scheduling) in order to schedule the tweet. DO NOT AUTOSCHEDULE. This will randomize the time that your tweet is posted. Make sure the correct day is selected and then select your time. Make sure you are using the agreed upon time zone and that the AM/PM setting is correct. After that, click the schedule button. You are now done!

Hints:

Copy and paste helps a lot. I write one message then I create all the tweets throughout the day with that message. Then I make another message. And repeat.

I've been scheduling my tweets to post every 10 minutes (5 tweets at one person per hour). I feel this is urgent enough but not annoying (and others can then retweet as well)

You can edit your scheduled tweets if you mess up! Just roll over the tweet with your mouse and click on the pencil.

If you can't tweet constantly or don't like the idea of having a bot have access to your account then please retweet others! Retweeting definitely helps a lot!

\I am @scoulton if you just want to follow and retweet.

I'll be tweeting from @GiveJoeTheBird tomorrow. I'll have my iPad with me but it's a workday so I will be checking it every 20-30 minutes and retweeting stuff, maybe snarking a bit as "Uncle Joe".

SarahDiddle, be sure to follow that twitter feed and @JoeBidensTransA (no M). Let me know your twitter handle so I can follow you.

Oh, nevermind- I already have you on my followed feeds. :)

Twitter Schedule for Monday October 15th 2012

We are continuing the twitter bomb today at focused times plus adding our local news papers/stations throughout the day. Please retweet wherever you can, especially if you do not want to set up hootsuite or spend the day tweeting.

All times are EST. I want to change from CST in order to catch the late night guys before their shows record today on the off chance that maybe we'll get mentioned! I also started a bit earlier so we will also end a bit earlier. This is my first time organizing anything like this so please bear with me.

Conan O'Brien @ConanOBrien
10am-11
Jimmy Kimmel @JimmyKimmel
11-12pm
Craig Ferguson @CraigyFerg
12pm-1
Jimmy Fallon @JimmyFallon
1-2
Dan Savage @fakedansavage
2-3
Village Voice @villagevoice
3-4
The Stranger @strangerslog
4-5

Please continue to tweet at your local news papers, tv news, and radio stations throughout the day! A few local newsy things off the top of my head are @mountainxpress (Asheville NC), @cl_atlanta (Creative Loafing), @cl_charlotte, @cl_tampa, and @joshmichael104 (Morning show DJ in Asheville).

As always retweet, retweet, retweet!

I need to go to sleep but if someone can make sure this gets visibility as the thread goes, I appreciate it. I will try to post a list of messages that can be used in the morning so people don't have to think too hard before coffee time.

Oops...it's the details that ruin good intentions.

$6,000 is not over 25% of $25,000. I'm sure the number was over $6,250 when you said this, but the sentence doesn't read that way.

"At the time I write this, it's over $6,000 and surpassing 25% of our target of 2$25,000.

Of course! Correct the math as pointed out above, although technically we were over 25% (just shy of $6500) when I wrote it. :)

I just got a great suggestion via email from a Farker who shall remain nameless unless they choose to out themselves. :) But it's a great idea:

We should get known car enthusiasts like the guys from Top Gear, Jay Leno, etc. to be interested in this. Or maybe the GM company would be interested in buying it as a charitable contribution and put it on display as a reminder of the history of GM.

And thank you, anonymous Farker! Great idea. :)

2012-10-15 01:20:03 AM
Oh one other thing if it hasn't already been brought up. If this blows up into a huge media event and you get the car and are going to auction it off you might want to consider contacting Barrett-Jackson. They have a massive car auction in Scottsdale Arizona (Jan 13-20 2013) and are known for auctioning off muscle cars and also do lots of charity auctions during the event. The auction is nationally televised event so it would be about the biggest showcase around. Just something else for you guys/girls to consider.
