(Daily Mail)   Not content to let some punkass soft-drink-swilling Eurotrash have all the glory, Gen. Chuck Yeager decides to break the speed of sound on the 65th anniversary of the day he did it first, just because he can   (dailymail.co.uk) divider line 19

Yeah, but that punkass soft-drink-swilling Eurotrash didn't even use a plane.

Now if you'll excuse me I must be back to my hotel and practice my affectations.

They should have coordinated this a bit better so Chuck could do a supersonic flyby right past Felix as he floated down on his chute. Yeager could have yelled something about punk kids in the way or something...

nytmare: Then who's the famous pilot whose plane strayed off course over the southwestern states a few years ago and they never found him?

Wrong-way Feldman. He ended up on a deserted island.

Reading about guys like these makes my nipples hard. I'd feel better about that if I didn't have these great big manboobs but what ya gonna do.

/Congratulations to you both, mates. Bless your hearts.

I met him in 1989, when I was a very young A1C. He was filming a commercial for the USAF at McClellan AFB in Sacramento. Zoomed onto the flightline in a silver-blue 'vette. After the filming, the Colonel I worked for introduced me to him as one of the newest members of the USAF. He pretty much gave me a death-glare, growled and stomped away. He scared the crap out of me. I have to find the pictures I got that day - they were pretty great, actually.

whidbey: Nice to know that in your mind, progressive ideology is something people just pretend to do, and don't actually follow it, and if they did, then somehow it's a form of mental retardation.

I can only imagine what your Thanksgivings are like.

Is Yeager a prominent political figure? Does he threaten you in some way? Do you have to like him on a personal level to congratulate him for being an important figure in American history?

You have more in common with Teabaggers than you think -- you, too, are always looking for a reason to stay pissed off.

costermonger: Yeager is almost as famous for being an egomaniacal, arrogant, sexist piece of shiat as he is for breaking the speed of sound. Almost.

Is he also racist? If he is, him and the Duke of Edinburgh (The Queen's hubby for you seperatists) should get fully drunk and the resultant slurs recorded for prosperity.

/At their age, it'll only take a couple.

ftfa: Yeager, 89, took off for altitudes more than 30,000 feet above California's Mojave Desert at t 9:45 a.m. in an F-15D fighter jet piloted by Capt. David Vincent.

so, um, he went along for the ride? good for him; at least it wasn't faked at a CIA soundstage this time.

It's actually pretty sad when think about it, someone who had a moment and has been chasing that glory ever since, even though his time has passed him by. I mean, good job for what you did Chuck, but you're essentially the Test Pilot version of "The Buggles."

BronyMedic: . Many people expected the X-1 to just fall apart.

There were people going around until today saying it wouldn't be possible to survive falling at supersonic speed. To quote Joe Kittinger from the press conference "I'd like to give a special one fingered salute to those people who said he would come apart going through the speed of sound".

I think I broke the mach meter, its acting screwy.
Go ahead a break it...we'll fix it.
Can you imagine sitting around a hanger at the flight test center in the 50's & 60's
with people like Jack Ridley, Bob Hoover, Chuck Yeager, Bob Cardenas?
Man...the stories they could tell. Having a beer at Pancho's....

Farting in the TV room isn't really considered "breaking the sound barrier".

/JK - Kudos to Gen Yeager
