doglover: I liked many of my high school speakers, but the anti- people make me physically ill. When they're not lying, they're exagerating and skewing numbers.

DARE people were the worst. They even knew the stuff they were teaching was blatant, fear mongering lies, and that was the hardest thing ever to swallow about the whole thing. Make drugs out to be the worst things ever so kids won't touch them was the tactic, and it failed so miserably it wasn't even funny.

I think the breaking point for me was in 10th grade, going through a DARE Trailer for the Tennessee Highway Patrol and seeing Weed put up in the same class as Crystal Meth in harm.

also, it's very funny to heckle paid entertainment at high schools. you get out of class for an hour, some dick talks shiat, and you yell obscene comments at them. good times are had by all.

After she gets through all the steps we stared booing her, but at least she had the composure to remain on stage.

Later we all had to write her an apology note.

I was out of school for a month, having appendicitis. Apparently, while I was gone, the school had Miss California come in as a motivational speaker. I guess she, at one point, had her dress pulled up by a group of students that mobbed her. Everyone in the school had to write a letter of apology to her. I had to complain to the dean that I shouldn't have to write it, on account of the fact that I wasn't even there.

I made the mistake of driving a bit tipsy according to the law. My blood test came back as .081, legal limit is .080 where I live (2 months after I turned 21). For my community service I signed up to work for the Museum. At that time I didn't figure it would be to bad due to my interest in history.. Only to find out that the museum was asking volunteers to wrap bottles at a large local liqueur store. Good times. I get popped and have to work at a place that sales booze for community service.

Speaking as one who has had substance abuse issues in the past, I can't feel badly for this woman: she does make money telling stories about the stupid shiat she did. And some audiences are not going to be receptive.

To answer the obvious question, I did drive drunk but was never caught, probably because I lived in a city with an overburdened police department. I am of course grateful that nothing happened to another person becuase of my actions

Under TFA, there's a bunch of comments, several from students who were at the rally. According to them, the kids that were talking were straight-up ignoring the speaker, and just carrying on their own conversations. The laughter she heard? Not even directed at her.

They do admit that one kid said something that made her upset, and you find out in the comments that the speaker left the stage crying...they also admit to a bunch of them following her out to the parking lot to apologize on behalf of the stupid students who were rude to her by either their comments or not paying attention.

If all of what the students say is true, then this lady told the media after their apology, which makes her both a person who makes real bad decisions, and an attention whore. If what the students say isn't true & they never apologized...well, then, she'd still be a person who makes real bad decisions and is an attention whore.

Eugoogoolizer: There was a bully at our high school who was a real farking jerk. I didn't get any hassle from him but I remember kids in the lower grades going home in tears because of how mean he was to them. The night before graduation he rolled his car going 160 kph and flipped it end over end. He was drunk. He lived but was basically a vegetable after that. They brought him back to school the next year to see everyone but he couldn't recognize faces or really even speak and didn't even have basic motor control. The kids he used to pick on then proceeded to throw food at him. Being a bully is one thing but I don't think I'd ever wish an outcome like that on someone, if it was karma he must have done some truly evil shiat to someone.

Well, we do something about it every single day. As a teacher, I can tell you that those kids would have been out of there and in ISS (in-school suspension) pretty damn fast inio our school. Oh, and no homecoming for you.

"I was on my way home from work and stopped for a couple beers. I didn't think I was that drunk." Drive home, park, and walk 4 blocks to the damn bar. There was absolutely no reason to stop at the bar on the way home. And no reason to drive home after making that first mistake. Walk back in the morning to get the car. All these years later, I still don't understand it.

We got to go watch two members of the Marine Corps Silent Drill Team put on a demonstration for about 500 of the biggest a-holes I have ever met.

We had a group of anti-drug motivational speakers at my high school. They did their little act about how drugs and alcohol are bad. Most of the students in the auditorium were bored and restless. Eventually, they had to stop and plea with the students for their attention, which prompted the school stoner to scream some nasty remarks their way (he was quickly escorted out).

I really wanted to get up and leave, but for a different reason. I knew what drug use and alcoholism could do and didn't need the reminder from people who failed to understand the dangers from the beginning. I mean, I had been bombarded with anti-drug and anti-drink campaigns from school, television and even PSAs in arcade games since I was in elementary. I'm sure these kids had as well.

Some kids do whatever they want, consequences be damned. I'm sure the kids who most needed the lesson were the ones ignoring it the most. But some kids doing a song and dance routine at an assembly aren't going to change the minds of the little rebels. Losing some body parts, spending some time in prison or injuring/killing somebody else will. They have to be the ones giving the lesson behind the podium before they learn. So why am I stuck sitting on these uncomfortable as fark bleachers again?

Unless my roommate was drunk at work, that doesn't explain the initial decision to stop on the way home rather than drive home then walk 4 blocks.

When I was in elementary school, there was a woman who came to speak to us about her son who died from drugs. My memory of the speech is in parts hazy, but I remember parts of it, and it really creeped me out. I remember we sat on the floor of the cafeteria and she stood at the front. Her story, as I recall, was that she left her son with a babysitter who for years, without her knowing, gave drugs to her son. Her son became an addict, and I remember her saying something about how she found him not moving and tried to get him to walk around (like they do in the movies).

She kept panning around the room and saying she could see it in our eyes. That she knew which ones of us were on drugs. That's the part that freaked me out. I was probably in second grade or so. After moving away from that town, I learned that the town was meth-infested. But I assume that was more adults than elementary school students.

When I went to college, there were so many seminars freshmen had to sit through. The one that bothered me the most was with several young women yelling at the students (me) about how they had been raped and how evil men were. It bothered me that it was only compulsory for men to attend the session. One guy fell asleep during the seminar and got a verbal thrashing.

I think the problem in general with these seminars is that you have one person who (bravely) admits he or she has either been assaulted or was an assaulter. But because he or she talks about it, there is this weird thing where that person is instantly absolved in the case of an assaulter or the audience is suddenly the assaulter in the case of the assaulted. I kind of think it antagonizes the audience a bit. "I did this bad thing but that doesn't matter because if you did what I did you are SCUM." Or, "Look what happened to me, it's because of SCUM like you."

It's basically scared straight for people who haven't proven they need to be scared straight. For example, I have absolutely no interest in having sex with a woman, consensual or otherwise. And I am terrified of drugs. And driving for that matter. I avoid both whenever possible.

I remember the mandatory assemblies in school. the thing is myself along with several of my friends came from a time and area of the country where it was church every Sunday morning night and Wednesday evening. also we got paddled at school as well as getting a belt on our asses at home. the majority of us didn't get into trouble like this but because a few students got caught drinking and smoking weed, presumably everyone of us were on a path to nowhere. same thing with the sex is a bad thing assemblies. (yes we had those too) you can get aids from this this and this but not this. they even took us to the local prison for a "scared straight" type of program I can't recall but those of us who went none of us were above average troublemakers. funny thing is, the school didn't send home any kind of notes even saying "hey we are taking your kids here" let alone getting permission. even funnier, the prison broke out into a riot a week later. Parents wanted the principal's head on a chopping block for that one.

speaking of the classes, in Oklahoma, offenders have to go through ADSAC classes, regardless of whether it was alcohol or drugs, even if a vehicle was involved or not. Case in point: my 21 year old son who just happened to be 18 when this crap happened, got two tickets one for possession of marijuana and one for possession of paraphernalia. It was a homemade pipe and residue in the pipe. Firstly, it was a small hick town in Southeastern Oklahoma. Secondly it wasn't really even residue just burnt up ash in the bottom of the pipe which was an apple core.
My son got mad because we couldn't afford an attorney to get it thrown out (which after speaking to several in Oklahoma City we found out that if we had the $$ he would have walked) but he plead guilty and was fined $1000. He had just gotten his driver's license and under Oklahoma law, it was automatically suspended. He paid the fines and part of the sentence was to attend ADSAC classes to get his license back. The asshole in Durant after hearing his story and listening to mine and his stepmother explain how he knew he was in the wrong and had taken two drug tests both negative says, "well it appears you have a substance abuse problem and I think you need to take 24 hours of classes" (translated: we want your money)

the morale of the story (and I told my kid this) unless you get caught redhanded with the pipe to your lips and the actual weed in your possession, deny, deny deny. see the cops showed up to the house when nobody was there except for his 17 year old girlfriend (I ain't no lawyer but I believe she didn't have authority to grant police access to the house) they seen the pipe from the door and asked for permission to search and she said yes. he, along with her mother and the mother's boyfriend show up and even though my son said it was his, all three get tickets. go figure. I told him never ever admit to anything unless you are caught in the act and then if it's bad enough, say nothing and ask for a lawyer.

/yet another reason I wish that I had had him come live with us after my divorce from his mom was finalized
