Supposing Iran had a bomb and determined to use it on Israel, I doubt they'd do something subtle like EMP.

An EMP device is something you use just before sending in ground troops. It shuts down all electronic communications and allows the evading forces to be more effective.

There is not much value in using an EMP, it would just piss people off until they replace the power control components near the detonation point.

We really, really F'd up when we gave them nukes.

FTA: Even if Iran were not developing a nuclear weapon, protecting the power grid in this manner would be a good idea, said Pry. "You don't need a nuclear weapon to set off an EMP. You can also easily get a non-nuclear pulse generator," he said. "They're perfectly legal. A terrorist could detonate one next to an electrical station and effectively black out a city or region. Such weapons don't do as much damage as a nuclear pulse does, but they are effective enough."

So it's cheap to prevent the problems, it's not just nukes that can cause them, and it's not something anyone's really concerned about. But you should panic.

This is why the Soviets used vacuum tubes in most of their communication equipment long after the west stopped using them, they're far more resistant to the effects of EMP or a nuclear blast

No terrorist is going to use an EMP or pulse generator to take stuff out. That's idiotic because it requires an insane amount of power to have any effect. If they have that amount of energy (ie. a bomb) then they would just it to directly take stuff out.

EMP and other energy weapons are ivory tower threats dreamt up by engineering egg-heads that have seen too many movies.

Somehow I dont think that hyperbolic metaphors really encapsulate the nuances of the situation. But, please continue to talk about rape. You seem to like it.

Actually we'd be the national equivalent of the civilized world's treatment of apartheid South Africa.

So not only would Iran need to build a nuke... they would need to shrink the hell out of it (difficult for a uranium weapon) and/or drastically improve their missile lifting capabilities to loft it to the ~400 km altitude required for an effective EMP burst. Oh, and it would still be considered a nuclear attack and they would likely get leveled in retaliation by the piles of thermonuclear weapons that Israel would be shocked, just shocked, to discover had magically appeared in its military arsenal.

I expect this will happen right after Iran's attempt to weaponize Godzilla fails because it turns out he is really just a big softly.

If they're going to the trouble of creating a weapon of that kind of destructive power (and I still don't trust the government in Israel), they're not going to waste it on an EMP burst.

The Early-Time (E1) High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) and Its Impact on the U.S. Power Grid

This report is often inaccurately cited by the EMP fear crowd. (Forstchen and company)

• "All/most cars with modern electronics will fail" "If you have an old Edsel, that will run"

Report
Approximately 10 percent of the vehicles on the road will stop, at least temporarily

• DOD will fall apart, except second strike capabilities, from an EMP blast

Military equiptment, like tanks and such have been built in for EMP shielding.

Automated systems that crash can be a range from a simple reboot to a fix. The irrevocably disabled scenario that Forstchen and is on all those annoying FWD FDW emails is gross hyperbole. Things will need repair and rebooting, but its not an irrevocably crippled for eternity scenario.

A good surge protector that reads about 50-100 milliseconds ahead of the surge will help. The $15 dollar ones wont cut it.

What happens if the Iranians fire off a nuke in any offensive capacity whatsoever, even if only to attack someone's electrical grid, is that the mullahs will have about three hours to live.

I don't understand why anyone, including the mullahs themselves, would believe anything else.

It must come down to people being stupid and gullible.

Read the book One Second After which has already been cited on the floor of Congress as a book all Americans should read, a book already being discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a truly realistic look at a weapon and its awesome power to destroy the entire United States, literally within one second. It is a weapon that the Wall Street Journal warns could shatter America. In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future...and our end.

I dunno. Is it easier to "aim" an EMP that seems to have the ability to strike over a very large area, or to aim a small kt nuke on a relatively untested IRBM?

When I was playfully searching the net for small targetable EMP devices I could fantasize building into my car to aim at speed cameras and their controllers, I wondered if that might be a bad idea due to the pacemakers, medical equipment, or other various things like that in the houses, businesses, and apartments behind the speed cameras.

A book having been cited on the floor of the congress is not such a good reference, a lot of politicians are technologically and scientifically illiterates. Not sure about the Pentagon without knowing who is discussing it: Secretaries? Lobbyist? General who got the job because of political connections?

Stopped reading right there. If I want to hear propaganda from people who are heavily invested in defense industry stock, I'll watch Fox News.
