For people who supposedly dislike English, they use a lot of it in their everyday talkings. My French has more French content than theirs. Then again, I speak French and they speak Quebecois, so they can do whatever they want.

That makes no sense, Walmart is the incorporated name and the brand name. Changing it makes no sense, when it isn't English in the first place.

Xenophobia sucks even if you're not English. Preserving culture? Nope.

Walmart is a combination of two English words and should be Frenchified. The Walton market => Le magasin Walton => Le Magwalt.

LOL so says the citizen in the most pants-wetting scared nation on earth. How's your TSA working out? Finding terr'ists everywhere?

The retailers should band together and close their stores for a week in protest. Quebeggars need their Walmarts and CostCos more than the stores need Quebec.
The Office québécois de la langue française is a pathetic organization with the goal of preserving a dying language - and I'm talking about Quebecois-French, not Parisian-based French.
It would not surprise me one bit to find that Quebec has a buggy whip preservation department too, necessitating that everyone that buys a car or truck still is required to purchase a buggy whip to keep that industry strong.

Quebec has some of the most left leaning social support nets in place.

Quebec also has the lowest GDP per Capita of any province in Canada, despite having one of the largest collection of natural resources (#3 in provincial resource income).

If any right winger ever wanted to point to more left ideas failing, Quebec is the best example you're ever going to come up with. The only question is, is their French insanity (Granted, a reactionary movement to a bunch of rich English people acting like colonialists in Quebec 50 years ago.) anti Business, since you need to speak French or apply for special permission to conduct business in English, or is it an inditement that overly left wing social support networks and high taxes are not always economically valuable?

Someday a lot of these Spanish-speaking parts of the US will declare Spanish the "official language"...and many of the same people whining about Quebec and their French language laws...will be the first ones to call "Racist" any Anglo who protests Spanish-language mandates in the US

In fact, Quebecois are more likely to speak English than a lot of Hispanics here in the USA. "English-Refusal" is a much bigger problem in the USA than in Quebec. And Yes I have been in Quebec many times...and No, I can tell that the flamers of my post are clueless about the infiltration of Spanish in the USA

It doesn't matter because it will just be pronounce Leh Meh Wah anyway.

If they really need to add something French to their storefronts, they can always hire people to throw livestock off the roofs at English-speakers attempting to enter the stores.

2012-10-14 05:58:36 PM
On a side note, understanding Quebecois is hard enough, but when it's texted to you laced with internet slang and abbreviations, it's damned near impossible.

They did the opposite in my town. The French resturant down the street had to change its name to "Overpriced Paste". Business isn't what it used to be.

Isn't that what they keep trying to do? As a province, leave?
I kinda hate the biatchyness of the seperatists as well...and the French language thing everywhere is madness...but I do think Canada wouldn't be as strong without our French speaking culture.

But they do need to chill out

Quebecois is hillbilly French by all accords. And their swear words are pretty lame too - I hear they all revolve around items in the Church?

Nakito: If you want to make it properly Frenchified, you need to drop the "W" and go with "Oualmart."

They did that many years ago with Mark's Work Warehouse. When they opened in Quebec they called it "La Ouerasse". Eventually they changed it to "L'Equipeur", but I liked the old name better.

I'm a Quebecker and I think this is silly. For most of us, it's just a name. We buy Tide and Ivory, not Maree and Ivoire. If anything, I'd like to see the name changes for purely aesthetic reasons, because iPhone and Best Buy sound stupid when said in a French accent.
