neenerist: MisterRonbo: Romney "won" the first debate because the media needs a horse race narrative.

If you believe Democracy Now and Fox News both came to the same conclusion on the basis of marketing, you might also be interested in my 2012 bridge blow-out sale. Obama screwed the pooch, period. 'Why' is more interesting than 'whether'.

If you believe Fox News was going to do anything except declare Romney the winner, I've got some retirement property 10 miles east of Miami to sell you.

As for Democracy Now, much as I like Amy Goodman, they weren't going to be satisfied unless Obama really brought the heat, and that would be stupid for a guy who is out front. And while I didn't watch their coverage, are you sure they were calling it a Romney win, or merely reporting what was widely being said in the media?

In any event, looking at their web site coverage of the debate, I don't see them calling it a win or loss for anybody

Romney lied his butt off, even his own campaign had to fact check him (pre-existing conditions). Obama didn't win, but really, neither did Romney - he didn't score any real hits, his only memorable line was a disaster about offing Big Bird. Somehow that's a win?

I have not been able to get a Romney supporter to be able to tell me if Romney's tax plan actually cuts taxes or not. I doubt they will be able to answer that. They don't even know what Romney wants to do.

You're forgetting the blame they'll heap on Obama. That should be good for a few years. Bush was without fault but Obama tanked the nation. I can hear it now.

I second that sentiment. Even though feeding the trolls only helps them live, it's that feed that's learned me the most.

Once again:

Can a Romney supporter tell me does his plan is a net tax cut or not?

If it's not, then why the hell even do it? If people are going to pay the same how will it help anything?

If it is a cut then who will pay more, or will it add more the deficit?

You can't have it both ways.

TFA is ripping on the source of the studies, not the plan.

Your post is even dumber than the headline, Obama was claiming 5 trillion in tax cuts over 10 years not 4, and even that was shown to be a ridiculous exaggeration. Most importantly, Obama has broken every promise he ever made on the deficit. By a mile and then some. Excuses, excuses.

Can't disagree, hearing a PBS wonk call Romney's performance 'masterful' was multi-level irony. At best it was a win in the Glengarry, Glen Ross sense of closing the deal, anything but presidential. That's what I feel makes it so damaging for Obama, the President lost against Blake.
Internal peer pressure maybe, or even external manipulation engineering a perspective on individual reporters, but an industry-wide tacit nod and wink collusion to build a horse race? Not buying it.

It's a 20% tax cut across the board on everyone. It cuts taxes on everyone, from rich to poor. Even though romneybhas said that poor people don't pay enough taxes, this will reduce the amount of taxes they already don't pay. And Romney has specifically said he will not lower taxes on the wealthy, although he did say that he would absolutely cut taxes on the wealthy.
This 20% tax cut, which will cut $4.8 trillion in tax revenues over 10 years is absolutely NOT a $5trillion tax cut, and you're a liar if you say it is.
It eliminates loopholes like the estate tax. See? Rich people will no longer have that estate tax.

I don't understand why so many people cannot, after years, figure out that a troll is not a partisan on the other side, he is someone with a psychological disorder who only wants to goad you. I live overseas and didn't get a chance to watch the debates (just read the Fark threads). But I asked my parents, who watched both debates live, what their thoughts were. My mom is the libbiest lib who ever libbed, and my dad is a Reluctant Democrat (former Republican disgusted with the turn the party has taken), and they both said that Romney won the first debate. No question. According to them, Romney was in command of the entire evening, and simply looked presidential. For low-information voters, he appeared to be exactly what you want a president to be. Yes, it was absolutely style over substance, but sadly that's all that matters to a lot of voters.

For what it's worth, they both said Biden destroyed Ryan as well, for basically the same reason.

Aha! trick question, caught you. We know he's going to cut taxes, cut spending, and cut the deficit. While increasing military spending and maintaining the peace through multiple new wars. Abortions will be illegal, but no longer necessary due to spastic tubes. Your health insurance will cost less, because your employer's religion declares that only morally unsound people become ill. If you get sick, you're fired.

A valid point that's been bugging me ever since Romney said something in the debate. Anyone capable of breathing nasally understands the Republicans spent four years blocking Obama on every initiative and in that context 'breaking a promise' is watered down to homeopathic levels. So why then did Romney pledge making sense of his tax plan would be a bi-partisan effort when they spent the last four years doing the opposite? Simple, he knows it can't be rationalized and if elected intends to hang 'the balance failure' on the Democrats. Pure theater.

From what I've heard the plan works under several hypothetical assertions e.g. Obamacare is repealed. Taking a shot in the dark I believe what they're planning to do is push dollars off the federal budget and moving them state budgets in several areas, which would be train wreck.

In any case being revenue neutral is just moving dollars around from one area to another. It doesn't fix a damn thing.

2012-10-14 10:22:49 PM

Dusk-You-n-Me: Now, on to the six studies.

Good analysis here. Link

So, two blog posts, an op-ed, and a blog post in response to criticism of the op-ed. Among the authors are two members of the American Enterprise Institute (not non-partisan), economic advisers to Presidents Reagan and Bush (not non-partisan), and a member of the Heritage Foundation (not non-partisan). In other words, the "studies" are "independent" only in the sense that the Romney campaign did not seek them out...as far as we know. And only two of them really qualify as "studies" at all, and even then, only in the broadest sense of the word. And saying they're non-partisan is a complete and utter lie.

Romney's own web site spells out how he intends to benefit the wealthiest of Americans while he's speaking of it as benefitting the middle-class. WIth a pathological liar's disposition anything is possible I guess.
