From what I've heard the plan works under several hypothetical assertions e.g. Obamacare is repealed. Taking a shot in the dark I believe what they're planning to do is push dollars off the federal budget and moving them state budgets in several areas, which would be train wreck.

In any case being revenue neutral is just moving dollars around from one area to another. It doesn't fix a damn thing.

Dusk-You-n-Me: Now, on to the six studies.

Good analysis here. Link

So, two blog posts, an op-ed, and a blog post in response to criticism of the op-ed. Among the authors are two members of the American Enterprise Institute (not non-partisan), economic advisers to Presidents Reagan and Bush (not non-partisan), and a member of the Heritage Foundation (not non-partisan). In other words, the "studies" are "independent" only in the sense that the Romney campaign did not seek them out...as far as we know. And only two of them really qualify as "studies" at all, and even then, only in the broadest sense of the word. And saying they're non-partisan is a complete and utter lie.

You really should go back to school, there was nothing in the article aside from arguing over whether various think tanks are partisan. Saying it's "ridiculous" is such a retarded analysis from what they were talking about.

Liberals are idiots.

Oh wow. 'Conservatives' really shouldn't use the word idiot.

Don't really need to go beyond that one.

Romney's own web site spells out how he intends to benefit the wealthiest of Americans while he's speaking of it as benefitting the middle-class. WIth a pathological liar's disposition anything is possible I guess.

Well, it makes perfect sense...so long as you're one of those waterheads that think after 50-odd years of constant, consistent tax cuts that have led the US to have among the lowest effective tax rates of any developed country on Earth, we're still on the right side of the Laffer curve. Never mind the fact the Bush tax cuts absolutely tanked federal revenue as a percentage of GDP, even during the housing bubble, which is a crystal clear indicator that even if you buy into the Laffer curve we're on the left side and need to raise taxes to maximize revenue.

Of if you just believe in the Laffer curve as a theoretical basis for actual tax policy in the first place.

Fart_Machine: Once you count in the closed loopholes that neither Romney nor Ryan can name the whole thing becomes revenue neutral. Trust me.

[i.ytimg.com image 480x360]

It has to be at best revenue neutral, because let's face it, no real tax plan can POSSIBLY do what the Romney/Ryan plan alleges to do, to wit, cut taxes and yet increase military spending while still keeping social spending level. It just can't. The Romney plan is attempting to appear to be all things to all people--not unlike its creator; a Frankenstein monster cobbled together of sixteen legs, nine arms and no head.

Romney must be more desperate than his devout followers realize at this point, if he's promising everything to everyone in order to get votes. And if his little plan succeeds, it will cost him big time if he wins, because he'll be in the unenviable position of having to increase military spending, cut taxes to both the rich and middle class, and yet keep the social safety net in place--otherwise, the losers will be his own party come the midterm elections. I doubt anyone in his party has thought of this potentially horrendous side effect yet, but they will when the 2014 elections come along, and the tanking economy means a big win for the Democrats.

The Evil That Lies In The Hearts Of Men: Roy: OK, so here's the plan.
Moss: A plan. Let me put on my slightly larger glasses.
Moss: OK, hit me.
Roy: OK, we go in.
Moss: When?
Roy: You know, like, in a minute.
Moss: Will that be enough time for me to get to know the plan?
Roy: Yeah, you know what? I shouldn't have used the word "plan". I've clearly gotten you overexcited.
Moss: Would scheme be a better word? Although that's just as exciting. I might even need even bigger glasses.

Tuilo: All right. Here's the plan. In the dead of night, you and I grab some provisions, hijack one of those... one of those longboats... and then, we... row back to Spain like there's no mañana!
Miguel: [pauses] Back to Spain, yeah?
Tuilo: Yeah.
Miguel: [uncertainly] In... a rowboat.
Tuilo: Yeah!
Miguel: [sarcastically] Great. Sensational. That's your plan, is it?
Tuilo: That's... pretty much it, yeah.
Miguel: [delighted] Well, I like it! So, how do we get on deck?
Tuilo: [pauses, deep breath] In the dead of night, you and I grab some provisions, hijack one of those... longboats...

[Tulio is banging his head against the wall in the brig]
Miguel: So how's the, uh... how's the escape plan coming?
[Tulio stops banging his head]
Tulio: Wait! I'm getting something!
[pauses, then goes back to banging his head on the wall]

I'd laugh, except that the Romneyan "plan" isn't a cartoon... it's a nightmare.

Or the Republicans will continue projecting their ass off, because that seems to work every goddamn election cycle, save one or so every decade in which the public wises enough and cues the Republicans into rebranding.

No, you'd be lying on your return, because "Obama Phone" doesn't exist. You should check into getting a tax credit for your Reagan/W.Bush phone, though. (Still don't think you'll get one.)

However, if you DO happen to have an "Obama Phone", you could probably get more selling it -- probably worth as much as a rainbow-farting unicorn.

that bosnian sniper: Of if you just believe in the Laffer curve as a theoretical basis for actual tax policy in the first place.

Most do. Those who advocate for it the most will never show you a graph with REAL numbers on it. The curve illustrates the "general" trend (money gained from payers outpaces money lost from avoiders to a point), but in reality it's not going to be a pretty curve and every kind of tax is going to be different based mainly on how easy it is to avoid and other things like what you do to enforce the tax.

And then they'll conveniently forget about the Laffer Curve when they say it's inevitable that corporations will pass taxes on to consumers. The prices of goods in your local store are also working on the same Laffer principle and the profit lost on paying the tax could be less than the profit lost by customers avoiding your higher priced product.

FTFA: Ed Gillespie, adviser to the Romney campaign, defended the campaign's assertion that six independent studies have validated the plausibility of Mitt Romney's tax plan, a talking point used by both Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan to defend the plan against attacks that the math doesn't ad up. "Six different studies have said this is entirely doable," Gillespie said on "Fox News Sunday."

What's doable? What math was checked? Or have six studies shown that there's a possibility that an unknown plan has a chance to be valid?

Look at the narrative of the first debate and the VP debate. Essentially the same but reversed. It was all too plain when they say that the VP debate was a draw and Ryan got his ass kicked. But the media say he was "calm" and "measured".

Obama was essentially the same, except he didn't lie repeatedly, and the media narrative is "listless" and "beat down" or "weak".

White privilege it is. All day. And Obama can't come out strong against Romney or he'll be seen as an "angry black man" and that will hurt him. Yet Romney can shovel shiat straight to the television and the media WON'T SAY A DAMN THING, and say he's "presidential".

JohnnyC: Doesn't really matter who is doing the calling out... The bottom line is that the Romney campaign and the GOP in general seem to think that lying is only way they can win some of the American people's favor. Remember... these are the people who proclaim that they're somehow more moral than the other guys.

Some people will believe them. Some people already do and will continue to believe everything the Romney campaign and the GOP tells them to believe without question. And the saddest part about that is that those people firmly believe that electing the people lying to them will somehow improve our country. They also believe that if we elect the people who aren't lying constantly, it will ruin our country.

We are better than that. The world is watching... I say we prove we are better than that. My vote will be cast accordingly. What about yours?

Romney didn't WIN shiat, I feel like maybe 5% of users on here, and about 1.4% in the general population, know how ACTUAL debates work and are scored. To put it in more basic (Community) terms: Romney led the country in a sing-along of "Evil Woman," only instead of calling him on it, the moderator declared they WERE, in fact, playing American Idol, and that Romney had taken it.

So, essentially, the only way the 20% across-the-board cut can come close to being revenue-neutral without impacting the middle-class is if you set the dividing line for upper-income earners at $100K, rather than $200K or $250K. That's the top 20% rather than the top 1%. It requires taking a big chunk out of things like the home mortgage deduction and charitable giving. Even if you apply a progressive scale to that, the lower end of that 20% is going to feel it a lot harder than the upper end. The range from 100K-250K makes up most of that 20%, the earners above it account for around 3% of the country.

Most small businesses, something in the high 90% range, don't make 250K in profit. Romney's plan offers no specifics about what loopholes and deductions he'd target, but assuming his across-the-board cut and additional military spending are accurate, and assuming that the range he's targeting is 100K and up...who's raising taxes on the job creators, exactly?
