Unlikely. if I'm at a coffee counter like that, it'd be impossible not to let anyone see me put my wallet in my purse. It would also be impossible for them not to see that it's zipped up inside, under a flap that has a click-clasp, with my hand propped on top.

That's why I make a point of pulling down my zipper, and putting my wallet inside my underpants.

What, TMI?

Whenever I take out my wallet in public, I make sure to lick it all over, while growling and staring at everyone nearby. That way everyone around knows it's mine and they better not even think about taking it.

Oddly enough, the mall has asked me not to come back.

he probably should have just kept it on his tray until he sat down. (that's how you keep anyone from seeing where you put it.) All in all a weird scene. why did guy in plaid take so long going back for his wallet, and then watch where he looks, and then he's still next in line.... I think he's the one who's in on it.

Not likely. See him when he comes in? He's scoping for marks pretty hardcore.

And for those saying plaid is in on it, I don't think so. The marks bag may be european but him and plaid are totally butt buddies. Not there's anything wrong with that.

Is this kind of pickpocketing (or bag-pocketing, I guess) very popular here in the US? Because I haven't heard about it happening much here. I know it's fairly common in Europe, because whenever I travel there I hear countless warnings. I was nearly ripped off twice. In Nice, some guy bumped into me from behind - there were very few others around so he had no reason to be walking so close to me. In Venice, I was swarmed by a bunch of gypsy kids and those bastards didn't even try to hide the fact that they were trying to steal from my pockets. I always keep my passport, cash and credit cards inside a pouch that I hang over my neck and inside my shirt, so they never got anything.

Happened to me all over Europe. Worse as you head East it seemed.

My grandfather, who lived in Hungary for 40 years, said the safest thing to do when mobbed by a bunch of street kids is to actually put your wallet in your hand, raise both hands in the air and start singing something loudly (I suggested Michael Jackson's "Bad" and he just stared at me).

The second people start looking over to see what's going on, the kids scatter. Worked twice for me years ago and I really got into the song.

I know that some guy tried to pickpocket me once, but he was very clumsy. Bumped into me, even slapped my ass where my right pocket was. He apologised to me, all smiles, and when I realised what just happened, he was far. Not that I would have confronted him, he was talled and in far better shape than I was.

I always keep my wallet in a front pocket, chained to my belt. Although the initial reason I used the wallet chain was that I kept losing my wallet.

I spent some time in Rome then traveled around in Greece. Because of stories like this I was very worried about pick pockets (despite living in SE asia for quite some time with no issues). Never had a problem. I saw plenty of people who did. There must be some tourist vibe that I didn't give off (unless I am in DC, for some reason in that city bums think Iwill give them money).

No expert here, but I think he is the victim's friend, as well.

The thief was looking all around for potential marks.

Btw, I live in Toronto, and I was pickpocketed on the bus by a couple who bumped into me very strangely. I should have been suspicious. But I was naive. They stole my camera right out of my coat pocket. That was like 5 years ago. It sucked. I never keep things in my outside pockets like that anymore. Shortly after that, they started putting up all these warnings in our subway about pickpockets and they arrested some at the airport.

On a postiive note, karma repaid me. A woman whose bag I found on the subway (with her wallet and camera and ipod touch), and returned to her, bought me a new camera about a year and a half later. :)

mightybaldking: What really makes me rage here is how goddamn slow the lunch line is moving. Come on people! Be ready for the cashier!

Farking A Bubba. What a bunch of dithering idiots they were.

First place I looked was front middle. A guy is getting set up at a table. I thought he tried to conceal something with his food wrapper - ie. previous customer left his wallet there.

Then he dashes up to the counter to get something.

A few seconds after he takes his seat he has a sly look around the joint.

BAR-NAR! Wrong.

GAT_00: PC LOAD LETTER: Basic wallet security: keep it in your front pocket at all times. Baggy jeans make it easy to pickpocket.

See, I keep mine back right, but I don't have anywhere to put it in the front. Phone is front left, keys, pen and cough drops in the right, and usually a jump drive too.

I keep my keys and wallet in the same pocket, not just for security, but because I can't stand sitting on something on just one side. I feel like I'm leaning. Maybe I have OCD.

Keigh: yeah, i saw it.

it starts offscreen but it's pretty clear when it happens. and that's why you don't let anyone see where you put your wallet.

I keep mine in my front pocket. You're welcome to try.

We have the same layout, but miscellaneous items (pens, jump drives) go into shirt pockets or cargo pockets. Front left is strictly phone, front right is strictly keys and back right is strictly wallet.

What do you guys do with jump drives? Work banned them and I don't need them at home.

Fark man. That was Shakespeare. What a beautiful summary.

Dunno if you saw my comment above, but after I realised I guessed the wrong guy I became completely transfixed by the two Nimrods at the front of the queue. "WHY THE FARK IS IT TAKING LONG?!" Train wreck. Could not look away.
