It seems like if you were going to do that much work to make it livable, putting in a real shower might be worth it.

I do so like "crazy" people, it makes life so much more interesting.

Yeah ... I like the idea of living in a converted plane, but his chosen style is very, very utilitarian.

It's a decent zombie base as well. High enough for them not to reach, and enough room for supplies until they zombie shuffle off after a deer or something. I think I saw Carl. CARL? HAS ANYONE SEEN CARL!! HE WAS SUPPOSED TO STAY IN THE HOUSE! CAAAARRRLLLL!!!!

Some of these plane to home conversions are very nice. This one, not so much.

It would be a biatch to heat and aluminum hulls (like Airstreams) are a biatch condensation wise outside of the desert.

Also, who did the interior design, a couple kids he hired from a dorm?

A Boeing 727-200? In Oregon?

"Bruce Campbell" or "D.B. Cooper"?

My first thought was "how hard could it have been to convert one of the toilets into a shower?" There's three. Rip one out and make it a shower room.

I keep wishing Carl would just die so that plot device could die, too.

I like the idea, and I'm glad he's happy with the result - but if you're going to convert a non-standard space into full-time living quarters it makes sense to work with a designer who can help you maximize the area.

Lorelle: Boeing 727 airplane hotel in Costa Rica.

Aircraft as homes, restaurants, etc are common in the Quepos/Manuel Antonio area of CR.

hmm. Sure, remove all the storage bins and just leave yer crap all over the place .... Okie dokie
And another vote for putting a real shower or hell, a tub, in the thing. I would have gone with shower and jacuzzi, maybe also an above ground pool below a wing. Oh, and nice front support, mister engineer... those look like railroad ties. Small quake and that thing is going to fall.

2012-10-14 05:44:14 PM
This guy has a manifesto, 100%.

2012-10-14 05:44:34 PM
RTFA and it sucks.

How did he move the aircraft to that location? How did he plumb it? How did he wire it, on the grid or off with generated power? What the hell?

Also, the pallets holding this thing up will decay and collapse in less than a year in Oregon humidity. Seriously might want to consider a permanent stilt construction.

TFA wasn't anything I'd hoped it would be.

Here I thought it was a Fark-ready story about how a man refuses to leave an airplane and claims he's paid for the seats in advance. Bonus: A woman and alcohol are involved.

2012-10-14 05:56:23 PM
Stopped in a restaurant that did the same thing, Aero Dogs in Tulare, CA. Apparently the owner ran into all kinds of problems getting it up and running... all sorts of laws on storing planes and such.

Agreed. I, too, hold aircraft-converted-into-living-quarters to very high standards, and my metrics also take "time spent" into account.

Exactly! I was not giving the Daily Fail another click, so I just hovered until I saw his name, and thought, oh, hell yeah. Dammit, dammit, dammit.

And outside. It would have been a lot better with a coat of paint or two. Instead of the cool plane in the woods it should be, it looks like a rotting plane in the woods.

Exactly. Next we'll be reading a story about a retired school bus driver who is living in a junker bus.

Did anyone notice that EVERY FARKING CAPTION pointed out that the guy pictured as Bruce Campbell?

We get it.

The idea is cool. I bet he had to use a chainsaw to clear the woods out to fit the plane.

This moron is quite possibly the worst engineer, ever. In addition to a shower that looks like a retarded Cabbage Patch Doll slapped it together, he's got the entire plane resting on pallets that are going to rot away to nothing in less than a year and leave that thing sitting in the mud. He hasn't actually built anything, it just looks like he took out the seats and moved in his stuff, and his stuff makes him look like a hoarder. 10 years resulted in this? He must be a drunk.

"...has completely renovated the airliner he now calls home"

Uh, no. No he hasn't. That shower needs a little work.

Am I missing something? I how does a retired, useless jet (sans engines and not in very good shape) cost $100,000?

I would think if you're willing to take one off their hands... handle the legals... AND move it... they'd pretty much give them away.

Unless $100,000 was the "delivered" price.

Article sucks.

Outside the Ripley's Believe it or Not Museum in St. Augustine, they have a hollowed out log house some guy built. About ten feet diameter, about 40 feet long, the guy did a superb job, with a bed, fireplace, table, etc., all built into the interior curve of the log, all finished and stained and varnished. I was impressed.

I DNRTFA so had no idea that is what he paid. Why wouldn't you just get 2-3 ocean cntrs for far cheaper and then throw the money saved into an actual interior? From the pics, the walls of that thing look like a rat (or rats) have been chewjng on them

That thing can't be insulated worth a damn either. Granted, he lives in Oregon, but still.
