THIS. Never goes out of style, easy to tell if it's clean, doesn't show normal, non-dirty fingerprints. So popular and practical, manufacturers are actually starting to market a "new and improved" white with this "white ice" business.

"The new appliances partly reflect the kitchen's changing role in the home. In an open floor plan, the kitchen functions as the hub of relaxing and entertaining - a return to its historic role as the center of family life."

Gee, wonder why we are getting fatter and fatter all the time?

While stainless steel is still the dominant look, there are clear signals it has outworn its welcome, even with no clear successor in place.

Clear signals? Every new kitchen I do is still getting stainless steel. NOBODY I have ever talked to is sick of it.

The brushed stainless is great - could never stand the type that showed every smudge. Friends have a fridge, freezer with same facing as the cabinets - it takes a while to find them if you don't know where they are - big kitchen. White works for me - can mix and match appliances and make doesn't become obvious..

I think we'll see brushed copper and brushed gold.

Not at my house, though. I brought the entire turquoise kitchen across a state. I'm keeping it forever.

Stainless steel interiors are generally a sign of quality. Stainless steel exteriors are simply for fashion. Plenty of times I've seen appliances that are stainless outside and plastic inside.

If I were remodeling, I'd get white enamel, or custom fronts to match the cabinets where possible. Stainless shows fingerprints too badly. But I'm keeping my professional stainless steel prep table, and almost all my small appliances are stainless.

I think most people like stainless because it gives them the feeling of being professional cooks. I don't know one professional who insists on stainless steel for their appliances.

2012-10-14 03:49:27 PM
stained steel?

2012-10-14 03:49:27 PM
Stainless won't ever go out of style because it is what is used by industry... and its used by industry because its the best material for the job.

Fail harder.

We have all stainless and if there was a more attractive alternative I'd go with it. I'd be interested in an enamel finish like those high end European ovens by Aga. I just saw an electric oven by them in this gorgeous blue-green color for a mere 15K. So, if they could do something like that for about 13K less, I'd consider it.
