Forty-Two: It appears that the Discovery Channel is showing this on a three-hour delay on the West Coast rather than live. Weak.

Good thing there's the internet.

what? i'm in arizona and watching it right now on both discovery and the live broadcast with no issues. discovery seems to be slightly ahead of the redbull site.

costermonger: "Fark physics!" - the balloon

Speaking from some (limited) personal experience with college projects, it's damn hard to predict the flight path of these things. Same with ascent rates.

2012-10-14 01:48:11 PM
Here we go. We're floating for real this time.

I have it on mute in Santa Barbara, and it's showing Mythbusters with cuts away to the balloon still on the ground.

geom_00: Ascent speed down to 65 ft/min. Now back up to 1000+ft/min

"He's all over the place! What an asshole!"

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

It's live here.

The balloon now looks like a giant white anus. Almost 128k now...

2012-10-14 01:49:05 PM

2012-10-14 01:50:03 PM

goodole312: trekkiecougar: Dallymo: goodole312: trekkiecougar: Yep, the Warrior and I have been watching this online and on tv (Discovery and Velocity channels are showing it) since one hour until launch.

No one believes that I read about this in a Star Trek novel! Now I'm going to have to go to my local branch of the library and find the Star Trek novel that I read years ago that had Kirk and some other character doing skydiving that originated from a platform up in space.

that was the cut opening from one of the movies wasn't it? i wana say generations

Star Trek (2009) had them diving to the drilling platform on Vulcan.

I totally forgot about it being in (or being sliced from) one of the movies, thanks for reminding me. I'm still going to hit the library, I believe the space diving incident was in a novel involving some of the OS crew.

some trekkie you are lol

Damn that oldsheimer and vodak!!!

Time to play the theme from Rocky.

WhyteRaven74: almost 20,000 feet higher than where Kittenger jumped from, or put another way, closing in on 4 miles higher...

This should be an Olympic Sport.

He wears skis, and then jumps as he lands!

Looks like they've hit neutral buoyancy - altitude is dropping off slightly.

2012-10-14 01:50:48 PM
Jesus, get on with it....

2012-10-14 01:50:53 PM

Which is closer to "live", the stream on the web, or discovery channel coverage?

Damn you, Brunt-Väisälä!

God, his capsule is bobbing up and down more than a flight steward on a San Francisco layover.

2012-10-14 01:51:35 PM
lost feed... something amiss? or just me?

2012-10-14 01:51:37 PM
This would be much more exciting if it were like a dunk tank - someone on the ground hits a button and he just drops out the bottom - the anticipation would be awesome.

2012-10-14 01:51:44 PM
Felix is soo getting laid tonight.

Probably checking to make sure his oxygen tanks look good and the parachute hasn't already deployed.

/Firefox crashed there briefly, so sorry if that was already answered on the feed
