TwistedIvory: TwistedIvory: I know I'm missing something incredibly obvious, but why are there such strong temperature fluctuations? The outside temperature fell to around -90, and then climbed to -40. What am I missing?

The explanation: "That's what happens in the stratosphere."

However, they claim that the higher you go, the closer the distance to the sun and therefore the warmer it gets. I just don't buy this. If that were the case, it would be tee-shirt temperature at orbit levels, right?

Different particles live at different elevations.

In the places where the particles absorb a lot of radiation (lots of gas and particulates in the troposphere, uv by ozone in the stratosphere, cosmic rays in the thermosphere), it gets warm. If you are in a layer where things aren't absorbed, it gets cold.

Sweet!  Well played.

Foaming: DreadnaughtZeta: Calling it now. He gets stuck in the capsule, falls back in time to wind up in Roswell 1947.

Guess it was a balloon after all.

Sadly his bones didn't time travel with him which is why he looked like an alien.

Doesn't need that complication really.

You try crash landing from 20 miles up and see how human you look at the end of it.

2012-10-14 01:13:49 PM

Foaming: The balloon has definitely grown in the reduced pressure. Only about the top third was inflated at the lower altitudes.

You can see the diffrence from the ground too... It's amazing how clear it looks!

stiletto_the_wise: Mawson of the Antarctic: Images like this are things that move the inner core of my soul, to see the curve of the earth is a privilege only a few have witnessed personally.

/Galileo and all the others raise their middle fingers in a big Fark You to those who silenced them.

[i.huffpost.com image 570x320]

You're seeing "the curve of the earth" because they are using a wide angle lens

It's like the announcer reading the thread.

In a way, isn't Felix Baumgartner doing the greatest, "Hold my beer and watch this..." of all time?

2012-10-14 01:14:17 PM

SenorDan: Scruffinator: This announcer sucks.

Still better than Joe Buck though.

Could you imagine if Gus Johnson had the call on this?

Or Chris Berman:

"He's going UP! UP! UP! UP!...

(two hours later)

...UP! UP! And he's out of the capsule!"

2012-10-14 01:14:28 PM
People see lots of things when they get high.

Evil Mackerel: whither_apophis: IsNoGood: Evil Mackerel: I wonder if he has a Peter Shilling song stuck in his head?

99 red balloons, more likely

Major Tom?

I was thinking along the lines of "The Noah Plan".

or Crash Test Dummies maybe?

2012-10-14 01:15:22 PM
So 102,800 is the magic number to set the record. We're only 4,000 feet from that.

Mawson of the Antarctic: In a way, isn't Felix Baumgartner doing the greatest, "Hold my beer and watch this..." of all time?

2012-10-14 01:16:32 PM
The camera view of the earth below would make a nice screen saver.

r1niceboy: Scruffinator: This announcer sucks.

Still better than Joe Buck though.

At least this fella doesn't have Dennis Miller accompanying him.

Fran Tarkanton should be on this.

Past record was in 1960. *salutes Colonel Joe*

Wow. Compared to what they got today, that's like jumping out of a balloon with a raincoat and some duct tape on.

eas81: Need Help Soonish: I can see the Balloon from my porch.

Mawson of the Antarctic: In a way, isn't Felix Baumgartner doing the greatest, "Hold my beer and watch this..." of all time?

Nah, his beer would be skunky by the time he got back down.

2012-10-14 01:20:25 PM
He looks like he is reading Fark threads.

2012-10-14 01:20:45 PM
Higher now than Kittinger's record altitude.

2012-10-14 01:21:18 PM
I like how you can hear the lady correcting the announcer.

2012-10-14 01:21:44 PM
This is giving me hardcore vertigo.

How much of a danger is drowning in the desert? I'd think rattlesnakes would be a bigger concern. Or maybe landing in the midst of a drug running operation.

2012-10-14 01:23:01 PM
I wonder if he can see his dad from up there.

2012-10-14 01:23:10 PM
Maybe I missed it, but what is the inviting, candy like, red button for?

2012-10-14 01:23:23 PM
Are all those people in "Mission Control" really necessary or is it just for looks? I'm sure a few of them are actually doing something but in one of the shots it looked like a lady was just watching the broadcast on her monitors.

2012-10-14 01:23:25 PM

BalugaJoe: He looks like he is reading Fark threads.

Hard to fap in a suit like that.

/Just sayin..

It is like a lead balloon.

Or drop a chicken and an egg.

Curious about that too. Capsule eject from balloon?

Considering that they just said the last guy's hand swelled up to twice its normal size because of a glove tear....
