Ahhh_Ennui: So when he lands, are we going to find out it was David Blaine the whole time?

Now, to find out how fast the capsule goes round our track.....It's the Stigs high flying cousin, Astro-Stig!

Fun facts about atmospheric characteristics through the climb (from wiki):

I wonder where they expect to break the sound barrier: near the beginning (~36-37 km), when air resistance is low (but mach speed is actually higher), or further down (~20 km), when mach speed is at a minimum, but air density begins to creep up..?

Gotcha. I knew there had to be a backup system. I just wasn't sure how it functioned.

There's a reason that although people have been able to do this for decades, they have not. Mostly the tech was military and secret and unavailable to idiot civilian daredevils.
It's really not a prudent thing to do. Impressive, but not prudent.
120,000 feet is undiscovered country for skydivers.

naughtyrev: bobbette: How did they react to Balloon Boy?

They tried to replicate the technology and it led to a series of tragic, yet hilarious, goat deaths.

I am not a Talibanologist, but I hope they were shaking their head over how lenient Richard Heene's sentence was. "We would have totally stoned that guy." "Too bad he wasn't tried in Texas, Rick Perry would have executed him for sure."

NIXON YOU DOLT!!!!!: shotglasss: So where is the balloon going once he's out?

The Moon?

It's going to knock out all our GPS satellites later. BAUMGARTNERRR!! It's your fault if I can't find my way to the burger place down the street!

You're seeing "the curve of the earth" because they are using a wide angle lens, LOL. At that altitude you'd barely be able to make out any curvature. So tell your soul to calm down a bit.

trekkiecougar: Dallymo: goodole312: trekkiecougar: Yep, the Warrior and I have been watching this online and on tv (Discovery and Velocity channels are showing it) since one hour until launch.

No one believes that I read about this in a Star Trek novel! Now I'm going to have to go to my local branch of the library and find the Star Trek novel that I read years ago that had Kirk and some other character doing skydiving that originated from a platform up in space.

that was the cut opening from one of the movies wasn't it? i wana say generations

Star Trek (2009) had them diving to the drilling platform on Vulcan.

I totally forgot about it being in (or being sliced from) one of the movies, thanks for reminding me. I'm still going to hit the library, I believe the space diving incident was in a novel involving some of the OS crew.

some trekkie you are lol

IIRC, Kittinger maxed out around 27km in his jumps, before the increasing density slowed him down.. I'd throw a dart and say he breaks it before passing 30km.

I have to say I am very impressed with the ground cameras that are getting such a great shot of the balloon and capsule. Those things are amazing.

Yep. Discovery made a deal and their money spoke well for them.e
Now if this "Live" stream were actually live. It's in ealay by just under 2 minutes to my understanding. Just in case something goes horribly wrong the FCC won't fine Red Bull.
