Pretty terrible photography.

2012-10-14 12:16:00 PM
So is there some kind of city code that says if you fail to make it as an actress you must smoke at all times?

2012-10-14 12:19:39 PM
They are smoking to remove the bad taste they have in their mouths.

2012-10-14 01:07:09 PM
Those look really staged. I know a lot of struggling or just-gave-up actresses, and none of them hang out in front of shuttered storefronts on Sunset smoking and looking forlornly into the distance.

Those look really staged.

Yeah, none of them were waiting tables or acting in porn.

Staged would have at least looked better. These photos look like the product of some guy trying to annoy bargain rate hookers with a cameraphone. He would have been better off hanging out with the Jumbo's Clown Room girls.

So these are pictures of grown-up runaways? I doubt these women all came to find fame and fortune.

Why did the photographer go around taking pictures of prostitutes?

Nashville is also full of people that moved there thinking they would make it big in the country music scene

Yeah, because Hollywood is the only place in America you're going to find whores working the streets.

If I want to see women who went to Hollywood to make it in mainstream acting and failed, I can go to one of many tube sites.

What's so special about this?

There are literally (and I am using "literally" correctly here) a couple million people in LA who wanted to get into show biz and didn't. Though that's probably low.

You can start conversations by asking people if they have a screen name or a screenplay they're working on. If they don't, they know someone who does.

Weird, it's almost as if the photos were taken with a theme or common idea involved.

Or making coffee.

Seriously, L.A. is full of aspiring actors and actresses, and a significant portion of them take low-paying jobs as waiters, baristas, or babysitters that allow them the flexibility to still audition and take acting classes. I think every non-Mexican in our 'hood working a service job is an aspiring actor.

Interestingly, these aspiring actors tend to read a large number of positive-thinking books (of the self-help genre)---and they all own MacBook Pros*---which only serves to perpetuate the illusion that they'll eventually become big stars if only they truly believe in themselves.

*based on my extensive observations at local coffee shops

I've worked in various places in Hollywood for all of the past 22 years. There's this creepy looking old lady that wanders up Vine Street in the morning. Sun glasses that look like they were picked from a trash can, scabs on her legs, sometimes pushes a stroller with a baby doll in it. She looked to be at least in her 60's when I first saw her, she must be older than time by now. I always figured she was one of those women that thought she had a career as a starlet but eventually just spent her days yelling at passersby on the street.

I think they're both symptoms of the same poor decision-making process.

Well, as long as there's a common idea involved, criticism obviously has no place at the table.

Nearly all look like tweakers and/or hookers now, where cigs are ubiquitous. There's been a major resurgence in Hollywood proper in the crowds and even among big names since hipsters made them cool again, though top A-list celebs obviously won't tarnish their image that way.

I really don't like this. The theme is intentionally vague and the pictures are set up so that it's really easy to project "hooker" on all of them when in reality it's just leads in their high school play somewhere in the midwest who had their feelings hurt because they aren't the next greatest thing in acting.

Knew a girl who moved to LA with that dream. In Ames Iowa she was the hottest, most stunning amazing beauty for miles around. The world was her oyster, men offered her jobs, cars, anything.

Arrived at her first audition to find a room full of women who looked just like her - I mean, same height, coloring, body type, light blue eyes, etc. Just like her.

Except most of them also had extensive training (acting/voice/dance/etc.) and numerous previous credits and a highlight reel.

Last I heard she was back in Iowa and married. Some can admit when they were wrong, then you get ones who can't or won't go back

I think I spotted their collective problem: They're all unattractive.

The former is what you do when you're still trying to "make it" and the latter counts as "close enough."

No joke: When I lived in Hollywood I gave her money. Thought that baby was real (at a glance).

Most people who move to LA end up in fail, but if didn't go there to escape yourself, you can go home again.

Yeah I hope the exhibit at least tells their stories? Otherwise, nothing interesting at all in the photos. Most have crappy lighting and uninteresting locations and the omnipresent cancer stick becomes a laughable detail pretty quickly.

welcome to the jungle, baby. you're gonna die.

this book is one more reason to hate photographers. if a person had taken time to research out photo images going back for many decades and put a little actual effort into the project i could have some respect for their work. but no, this was point and click of a few faces in 2010. big farking deal. people have been failing to make it in the lyme light for a very long time. hundreds of thousands of them.

I might have known her? Was she a design major with blonde bangs and a complicated German last name?
