Last I checked, calling someone a fruitcake meant they were crazy, not gay. So subtard, what exactly is the point, here?

Wow, I didn't know so many people could be so clueless.

Of COURSE this is a plausible-deniability slur against gay people. "Fruitcake" was a VERY common slur against gay people 30-40 years ago, deriving from the even-more common slur "fruit".

This is being dog-whistle marketed toward those who, a generation or two ago, would have been very familiar with calling gays "fruits" and "fruitcakes".

And when called on it, Chick Fil-A can always claim they just meant holiday fruitcakes. However, the advertisement really doesn't make any sense EXCEPT as an anti-gay dog-whistle.

Stupid straight people. Maybe YOU have never been derisively called a fruitcake, but I have, and I know what they meant. Part of being homophobic is pretending that bigotry against gay people doesn't exist. You know it, I know it. Stop acting like you don't.

LRA61380: "fruitcake" is a really common slang term for gay

Is "really common" a slang term for "completely uncommon"?

Fruit? Gay. Fruitcake? Nuts.

It's insane people who would be offended by this. (But who cares? They're insane!)

Guess its been a while since you checked. Here, let me Urban Dictionary that for you Link

Oh wow, Urban Dictionary. Truly the paragon of word truthiness. I guess if a user-updated definitions site says "fruitcake" is slang for gay, that must mean it's true.

Fruitcake means crazy. Nuts. Bonkers. Off your rocker. Bats in the belfrey. Light's on but no one's home. Elevator doesn't go to the top floor. Cheese slipped off your cracker. Few fries short of a Happy Meal. Not playing with a full deck. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer/crayon in the box.

I'm 30 years old and have never heard anyone use that word to mean anything other than cuckoo for cocoa puffs.

So you're 30 years old and you've never heard a term a used a certain way, and so therefore it must never have been used that way. Got it. Well, since we're giving out our ages, I'm 45 and I have heard the term used to refer to gay people. As someone has already pointed out, I can remember when the term "gay" didn't mean homosexual (see Flintstones theme song lyrics - you'll have a gay old time). And while no one here is calling the Urban Dictionary a "paragon of word truthiness" , you do have to admit that the definition is in there, and listed above the alternate definition of "crazy".

I think the real problem here is that you just don't like to be wrong.

I honestly can't believe the amount of sheer denial in this thread. I've lived in the south most of my life and in Cali for the past five years and I have heard rednecks like you assholes refer to gay men as fruitcakes thousands of times. Either you people live in caves or you are a basement dwellers who don't get out much. Either way, STFU. Either don't know what you are talking about or just horrible bigots.

Some folks seem pretty pissed off that they were unaware of this slur... but that doesn't mean it isn't a slur:

UD is not the be-all-end-all of factual information - but the fact that the #1 ranked meaning of "fruitcake" is a derogatory term for a gay man certainly suggests that TFA, subby, and yours truly are not the only people who are aware of this.

I've heard "nuttier than a fruitcake" referring to crazy. I've heard "fruitier than a fruitcake" referring to gay. In Chik-Fil-A's ad, my mind went towards slight gay bashing.

Does a Wikipedia entry make you happy, or would I have to spend all day digging up references to satisfy you? There's wiktionary.org, but I'm guessing that if Wikipedia and Urban Dictionary aren't good enough for you, Wiktionary won't do it, either.

So, anyway, yeah, it was either a pretty dumb gaffe or an intentional dog-whistle, but I'm not going to get too worked up over it either way. There's only so much outrage I've got to work with per day and the evil Russian rainbow milk brigade has already used up much of my quota for today.

But y'all go on thinking that all us queer folk are outraged, OUTRAGED by Chik-fil-A's antics if it makes you feel better.

As a gay man, allow me to say that I've not once heard anyone refer to homosexuals as "fruitcakes".

As another gay man, allow me to say that I have. In fact, I've heard it more used to mean gay than crazy, so that I would also take it to mean a gay person over a crazy person. Although I am very young, fruitcake isn't a popular way to call someone crazy anymore.

Not only does 'fruitcake' traditionally refer to crazy people, but that definition also makes the most sense with respect to the ad it's placed in.

Only a *crazy person* Wouldn't Love Our Party Trays! Makes perfect sense and is a template that has been used thousands of times before in marketing.

Only a *gay person* Wouldn't Love Our Party Trays! Makes Nofarkingsensewhatsoever.

Chalk me up as one of the many people who think you folks got your terminology mixed up in your mad dash to be offended. Put your poutrage away and realize you're wrong. There are plenty of things in the world to be outraged about without having to misconstrue random shiat you found on the internet.

Oh yes of course, the standard "you must be a bigot" defense. I love it. I live neither in a cave, nor in a basement. I'm not a redneck, either.....though I do currently live in BFE North Carolina. While I agree there are rednecks all over this country, there aren't many in Chicago, IL....at least not in the neighborhood I was born and raised in. But you go on thinking that people who don't use the word in that way, or have never used it/heard it in that way must be closet homophobes. It's oh so precious. Wait no, it's oh so retarded.

From Wikipedia: Fruit (slang)Fruit and fruitcake (as well as many variations) are sexual slang terms which have various origins but modern usages tend to primarily refer to gay men and sometimes other LGBT people.[1][2] Usually used as pejoratives, the terms have also been re-appropriated as insider terms of endearment within LGBT communities.[3] Many modern pop culture references within the gay nightlife like "Fruit Machine" and "Fruit Packers" have been appropriated for reclaiming usage, similar to queer and dyke.

Just sayin'.

From the comments to TFA:

This isn't stupid. It isn't anything. It's a play on words - people sometimes (poorly) bring fruitcakes as gifts to parties. They are trying to make a joke about the fruitcake being upset someone chose something better. The fact that we have to explain this to people looking to find offense to gays everywhere is pathetic.

To be fair, though, as Simon Doonan has taught us, a gay person would indeed probably steer clear of a party tray like that.

Indeed. I can't imagine my gay friends being interested in that crap.
