Last I checked, calling someone a fruitcake meant they were crazy, not gay. So subtard, what exactly is the point, here?

2012-10-14 12:21:18 PM
Like the article says it's possible Chick-fil-A just didn't know, somehow, that "fruitcake" is a really common slang term for gay. That's definitely not how I read the ad, though.

2012-10-14 12:27:21 PM
To be fair, though, as Simon Doonan has taught us, a gay person would indeed probably steer clear of a party tray like that.

Indeed. I can't imagine my gay friends being interested in that crap.

LRA61380: "fruitcake" is a really common slang term for gay

Is "really common" a slang term for "completely uncommon"?

Fruit? Gay. Fruitcake? Nuts.

It's insane people who would be offended by this. (But who cares? They're insane!)

Of course, it means Chick-fil-A has a crappy PR department. Or they don't give a fark.

They do, they put ideology ahead of talent as one of my friends who used to work for their corporate communications dept told me.

Screw you, subby, for making me side with Chik-Fil-A.

Fruitcake doesn't mean "gay".

Coco LaFemme: Last I checked, calling someone a fruitcake meant they were crazy, not gay. So subtard, what exactly is the point, here?

Yeah, my first interpretation of the term "fruitcake" is that it's a mildly-not-nice term for someone who suffers from mental illness, or who doesn't live in the same reality as the rest of us. I haven't heard "fruit" and "fruitcake" used as derogatory terms for gay people for a really long time, except in the term "Froot Loop" as a reference to Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C.

/did any of the gays even complain?

Fruit = gay
fruitcake = crazy

2012-10-14 12:49:10 PM
No, it's not a really common slang term for 'gay'. But I can definitely see their PR folks thinking they're oh so clever by just skirting the offense then acting all butthurt when they're called on it.

2012-10-14 12:49:14 PM
Fruitcake means crazy. Hence the expression, "nuttier than a fruitcake." Because fruitcakes tend to contain a lot of nuts.

Chick-Fil-Ocrap using words with dual meaning. Yeah for them being all clever and sh*t like that.

As a gay man, allow me to say that I've not once heard anyone refer to homosexuals as "fruitcakes".

2012-10-14 12:50:32 PM
Never heard "fruitcake" used to refer to homosexuals. "Fruit" by itself has been, but even that slang is pretty dated.

I don't think anyone is *outraged* about this. It's just kind of an unfortunate choice of words for a company with their history. I don't know whether they were just being dumb (very possible) or intentionally using the term that way.

I see that they also incorporated the use of black ink, they must be racist too.

2012-10-14 12:53:57 PM
As much as I'd love to be outraged, I'm just not feeling it. When I think of 'fruitcake', I think 'holidays' -- which, coincidentally, are near -- or 'looney' -- which, coincidentally, is what one would need to be to take slight with the ad.

Some folks seem pretty pissed off that they were unaware of this slur... but that doesn't mean it isn't a slur:

UD is not the be-all-end-all of factual information - but the fact that the #1 ranked meaning of "fruitcake" is a derogatory term for a gay man certainly suggests that TFA, subby, and yours truly are not the only people who are aware of this.

2012-10-14 12:54:21 PM
The old saying, "Nuttier than a fruitcake", never had anything to do with gays.

"Fruit" is a now rare word for gays.

My lawn, you, off.

2012-10-14 12:55:14 PM
I've heard the word fruitcake used more to define a crazy, however in rare instances I've heard it define gays. I believe 30-40 years ago it was the opposite. Funny how word meanings change over time.

Why in the Fark is everyone so damn touchy? Seems that everyone reads things into something to suit their own purpose.
Still it was a poor choice of words on their part, considering their recent faux pas.
Fill in the blank and someone will be offended:
"Only a ____________ wouldn't love our party trays"

Wow, I didn't know so many people could be so clueless.

Of COURSE this is a plausible-deniability slur against gay people. "Fruitcake" was a VERY common slur against gay people 30-40 years ago, deriving from the even-more common slur "fruit".

This is being dog-whistle marketed toward those who, a generation or two ago, would have been very familiar with calling gays "fruits" and "fruitcakes".

And when called on it, Chick Fil-A can always claim they just meant holiday fruitcakes. However, the advertisement really doesn't make any sense EXCEPT as an anti-gay dog-whistle.

That's because you're an idiot. No offense, lots of people are. You've probably heard "fruit" in the context of homosexuals, and thus relate any fruit-related term as an anti-gay insult.

Fruitcake means crazy.

As a person who desperately and actively seeks things to be offended by, I am not particularly offended by this. So I suggest we expand every English word to be a euphemism for gay people, so i can be constantly offended by everyone no matter what they say. Thanks for your support in this matter.

2012-10-14 01:10:52 PM
This reminds me of a local controversy regarding a small business's radio jingle. The lyrics included "Save me a nickel, save me a dime" and the PC police insisted that it sounded like "Save me a n***er, save me a dime" nevermind the fact that that makes no farking sense, but that the jingle was written and performed by a black gospel singer.

Seriously, we get it. You hate Chik-Fil-A. But trust me, they've given you enough legitimate ammo on their own, you don't need to redefine words to be offended. You have more than enough to blog about already.

Cathy, did you practice this or are you a natural asshole?

Cause really, only a moron, with a track record of marginalization and outright homophobia like yours would approve this copy.

christ, for the life of me I DON'T understand why I'm not wealthy if a mouth breather like Cathy can do it, keep it.

2012-10-14 01:13:31 PM
For the record this looks like a local advertisement, not some national campaign. Easy target, yeah, but the person to blame is probably the assistant manager making 12/hr at the local chickfila
