Unless the OOD on the Cruiser asleep at the wheel, I don't see how this could not be the Submarines fault. The CO of the Cruiser should keep his job.

I thought subs were required to give way to non-submersibles. The idea being that it's easier for a sub to see a surface vessel than for a surface vessel to see a sub. But I could be wrong.

I'd be genuinely surprised if they were more or less intelligent, on average, than any other military in the world. If humans are involved, dumb shiat is going to happen from time to time. We are flawed.

When I was in the (US) Navy, a Canadian destroyer hit my ship (an aircraft carrier). The bigger ship always has the right of way.

When I was in the USN, a ship in my home port hit Japan. Japan was determined to have the right of way, so Skippy was fired. (An OS on my ship had been on watch on that ship at the time. He said that when it ran aground the captain ran into CIS in a panic shouting, "WHAT DID WE HIT?!" and some smartass replied, "Japan, sir.")

On a more serious note, there are many competencies involved in running a navy, and I observed that the USN isn't the best at all of them. I don't believe any nation on Earth surpasses our competence at conducting combat operations at sea, but we've got rusty at some tasks of basic seamanship. It's farking embarrassing to watch an American ship moor, especially in the presence of foreign navies that manage the same task in a quarter the time. I wouldn't be surprised if there were lots of navies that were better than ours at the unglamorous task of not colliding with other ships.

Yeah there was a thread about them, some can go underwater now and one of them even fired a torpedo, and sank an anchored target. Before long they'll have the technology to fight WWII.

Well, the HMCS Chicoutimi, (Formerly the HMS Upholder) caught fire shortly after leaving Ireland.
The HMCS Corner Brook (Formerly the HMS Ursula) had toxic lead contamination.
The HMCS Windsor (Formerly the HMS Unicorn) had a rusted out hull that limited its maximum safe depth.
The HMCS Victoria (Formerly the HMS Unseen) had electrical issues exarcebated by the Navy techs who worked on her and blew the system.

All four had bad welds when they were sold, requiring repairs before even leaving Britain.

I almost ran over a submarine with an aircraft carrier... It surfaced 180 yards directly off my bow. Thankfully, I was going just fast enough to maintain steerage and was able to avoid a collision with an "all back full." I was the OOD, and the XO was on the bridge. We decided it was in both of our best interests that the old man never need know...
