I don't understand why people would get upset about this. The last seven Call of Duty games are pretty much the seven best games ever made. Why fix what isn't broken?

Whenever I hear someone whine about resolution or other graphic stuff in a game, all I can think is "Thanks for being part of the problem".

Of course. Halfhearted third-party efforts on Nintendo consoles have been the norm since at least the days of the N64.

I enjoy a lot of games on the Wii and I'm fine with not seeing Mario's pores.

I also enjoy MW3 on the XBox and if that's not 1080, then it's the best looking 720 I've ever seen

You have be sitting closer than 10 feet to a 50-inch TV to be able to see more detail than 720p.

From six feet? Well, that depends on the size of your TV, but I'd say that yes, on my mid-range HDTV I can definitely tell that CoD is not using all the pixels to the best of their ability.

1080i and 720p are quite similar, but 1080p and 720p are night and day different with my projector at about 15 feet from the sofa. I've watched a number blu-ray titles that I've also seen in cinemas several times and some have looked better on my home projector at 1080p.

Nothing at 720p or 1080i looks remotely comparable to cinema quality.

There are a number of films I've had to watch dozens of times, for work, in various cinemas. In some cases, they looked better at 1080p on my home projector than they did at a particular screening. Also had to review quite a few clips and trailers at various resolutions on my home projector, the same video files in 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p.

720p video is quite comparable to 1080i, but neither 720p nor 1080i look anywhere near as good as 1080p

The difference is framerate performance as in one will have more frames dropped or not rendered properly than the other. What do I win?

So is it the console that can't handle 1080p or the game that can't handle 1080p? If it's the console, I'm amazed and disappointed. That's inexcusable for a device released this year and intended to be used for the next 5+ years. If it's the game and the developer can't make it work at 1080p, that's on them. According to the specs, the console is supposed to be capable of 1080p so I'm guessing it's purely the publisher that's dropping the ball.

As for being able to tell the difference, if you can't tell, get your eyes checked. Seriously. You need corrective lenses. I can tell 720 from 1080 from 10' on a 37" if I'm wearing my contacts. Also, running the display at its native resolution will always result in a clearer picture. If I have a 1080 panel, I should be able to send a 1080 signal to it, not upscaled.

I game from 2-3' away from my 27" 1440p monitors. Before that, I gamed about the same distance from my 37" 1080p monitor. The monitors sit on my desk which is where I play games. If I had a console, it would be plugged into my 37" 1080p monitor on my desk. So I want the highest resolution and detail possible.

I think it's just the game. Many console games, such as Alpha Protocol and the ME games, offer an HD range of 720p/1080i/1080p.

None of the CoD games have been 1080. They don't even run at 720p natively. usually it's like, 600 or 540p upscaled.

Subby must have meant that with the Wii U, the true "Next Generation" is supposed to arrive, yet it apparently can't handle 1080p. Yeah, it could be just that COD programmers are lazy and don't want to put any more time/money into the game to get 1080p, but we won't know if Wii U can truly handle 1080p games till probably later in the console's cycle.

But, it's probably a moot point... "The R700 GPU in the Wii is a strong GPU - the Wii U will be capable of outputting full 1080p graphics - but it is ultimately a four-year-old GPU."

so the "next generation" is really repackaged "old generation" from 2008. Yah, it's all about the games, but Nintendo seemingly really cheaped out on the hardware this time around; only 2GB of Ram. My farking PHONE has four times a much Ram as the Wii.

Very true.

We should instead complain about how the Wii versions of the last few COD games have been inferior to their other counterparts. Fewer players in multiplayer. Fewer features.

Imperious Rex!: I think it's just the game. Many console games, such as Alpha Protocol and the ME games, offer an HD range of 720p/1080i/1080p.

When you read that kind of stuff on the back of a box it's usually referring to upscaling, taking a smaller number of pixels and stretching them to fit a higher resolution display.

There are only a handful of games that Xbox or PS3 can render at 1920x1080 resolution natively, like Virtua Tennis or puzzle games. 99% of games are too much for the hardware to handle beyond 1280x720, sometimes even lower.

It was reported a while back that the Wii-U would be the first console that could run modern games at 1920x1080, but I understand there is some performance issue resulting from the interactive "pad-troller" having to render 480p video at the same time.

I'll give Treyarch this, at least they cram a lot of extras in their games, zombies, multiplayer modes. It shocks me that the COD engine is 5 years old. Activision is a bunch of greedy farks (yet they don't do online passes) and it won't shock me if the PS3/360 are better than other versions because that's their bread and butter.

styckx: Ahh yes the Treyarch COD... Always visually appealing but something just never feels complete about it and feels off in the controls. Then back to the Infinity Ward version.. Always visually appealing but is just recycled bullshiat from past versions w/ perks rearranged and renamed.

Yep, that's the COD game cycle. Treyarch feels something is missing but good while the MW games feel hollow and less impressive once you play it.

I don't think it does, in fact I would be surprised if it had 2GB. If it's a brand new US version of the Galaxy S3 it might equal it. Your storage capacity and your RAM are very different things.

Also consoles have always been old hat on the technology front, the Xbox 360 and PS3 were the same. The PS3 uses a G70 chip (think 7800/7900 GT) which was released to the public June 2005, vs the PS3s release in Nov 2006-early 2007. At the moment, the Wii U is THE most powerful console, and is priced the same as the PS3 is now, you have to remember that the PS3 released at over a grand NZ (about 800USD) whilst the Wii U has released at half of that.

Also capacity doesn't mean dick, my computer has 8GB of mediocre DDR3 in dual channel and I rarely exceed 50% whilst maxing out my 2500K and 6870.

Surprised a little that no one's mentioned that this will be a launch-window title and that may bea reason why a few corners are getting cut.

I bought and played Call of Duty 3 on the Wii as a launch title.

It sucked quite a bit.

But it was launch title... so I didn't have a lot of other options at that time.

Hated seeing the other consoles get better rating for their version of COD3 but I shouldn't have been surprised.

Maybe you need to try a different cinema. In theaters that are used for both 3D and 2D screenings, sometimes the projectionists don't properly calibrate for 2D, or even leave the Sony 3D lenses on, which makes the image a lot darker.

Films are still shot at 32 FPS because people associate the higher framerate of 60Hz with television and think it makes things look cheap, when really 60 or 120 FPS is far better.

/they commonly say it looks "too real"
//r-tards.

2012-10-15 02:10:23 AM
Activision has aimed for a solid 60FPS in modern Call of Duty games. This is before accounting for anything else.

However, of course, you get slowdowns when 16+ players all throw grenades and rockets and smoke grenades and cause all kinds of particle effects on top of map effects and lighting and so on. Naturally, this can make the framerate chug.

I'd wager that they'd rather not go through the effort of optimizing the WiiU port to get decent performance at 1080p (rather, they probably want to make the port as quickly as possible - at this point the 360 is still probably their main target platform) and by keeping the resolution at 720p, they can guarantee a more consistent 60FPS during more intense scenes.

It's strange to give them the benefit of the doubt.

fluffy2097: Films are still shot at 32 FPS because people associate the higher framerate of 60Hz with television and think it makes things look cheap, when really 60 or 120 FPS is far better.

It's due to familiarity.
If films had always been 48+/60fps and soap operas the opposite, then the situation would be reversed.

Peter Jackson says that your mind drops the stigma after about 15 minutes or so of watching a high-fps movie. Gives me high hopes for the potential 48fps bluray release of The Hobbit (since they made the theatrical release very select, sadly).

A higher framerate is inevitable.

2012-10-15 12:13:06 PM
1080p on a reasonably sized television is far from how sharp it could be before your eyes can't tell the difference in an increase in DPI. If you can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p then you need a much bigger television. Oldtimey syndrome can kick in once TV's surpass 300 DPI, not a pathetic 50-80 DPI.
